"Not only standing for, but standing up for diversity": an intersectional qualitative analysis of how university students embody and resist discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Universities are key social institutions that shape student health, wellbeing, and future trajectories. However, they are also embedded in, and contribute to, existing social inequities. Students holding marginalised positions consistently report experiences of discrimination within higher education. Such experiences adversely affect their mental health, sense of belonging, and academic trajectories. Much of this research relies on single-axis analyses, failing to capture the complexity of discrimination. Therefore, this study takes an intersectional, qualitative multi-level approa

Association of resident characteristics with patterns of patient self-assignment.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that resident characteristics impact patterns of patient self-assignment in the emergency department (ED). Our goal was to determine if male residents would be less likely than their female colleagues to see patients with sensitive (e.g. breast-related or gynecologic) chief complaints (CCs). We also investigated whether resident specialty was associated with preferentially choosing patients with more familiar chief complaints. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study at a tertiary academic medical center using data from all adult patients presenti

Gender effects in anaesthesia training in Australia and New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Women face gender-based challenges in their medical education and career. Inequitable access to procedural training, a confidence gap, and professional identity deficit have been shown. We made a gender comparison of procedural case volume, confidence for independent practice, perceived gender and ethnic bias, and professional identity in Australasian anaesthesia trainees. METHODS: An online, voluntary, anonymous survey using SurveyMonkey® was delivered to Australasian anaesthesia trainees. Information collected included demographics, experience and confidence in 12 anaesthetic pr

Differences between females and males in axial spondyloarthritis: data from a real-life cross-sectional cohort.

Objective: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease that usually presents with axial symptoms, but can also present with peripheral and extra-articular manifestations. It occurs equally in females and males. The diagnostic delay for axSpA is 5-7 years, and is significantly longer in females than in males. The aim of this study is to investigate the difference in disease characteristics between females and males with axSpA and to stratify this difference according to human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 status.Method: Clinical characteristics, spondyloarthritis (SpA)

This qualitative study took place in a township where there is high STI and HIV prevalence. In addition to reviewing barriers to PN, the study will also identify participants' perceptions about effective PN strategies that are presented during the intervention. Ultimately, the study will assess the intervention's impact on participants' motivation and skills

Barriers and facilitators affecting self-disclosure among male survivors of child sexual abuse: The service providers' perspective.

Research regarding child sexual abuse (CSA) indicates significant gender differences in disclosure rates, with males less likely to disclose their abuse compared to females. CSA can have lasting impact on a children's emotional, physical, and psychological wellbeing. While service providers play an instrumental role in providing care and support for male CSA survivors, little is known about their perceptions and experiences related to disclosure among these men. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore service providers' perceptions and awareness of disclosure-related barriers and faci

Race and gender disparities in mental health documentation in primary care: Findings from a video vignette experiment.

Unstructured clinical notes could be a key source for mental health detection and care in primary care settings. A growing use of LLMs to extract mental health indicators from unstructured clinical notes has the potential to aid in this effort. However, these technologies do not account for provider bias at the point of data entry. In this video vignette survey experiment study, we explore how mental health information in written clinical notes differ in frequency, content, and quality by patient race-gender presentation. Leveraging the strengths of an experimental design with 111 practicing h

Psychological processes underlying the impact of gender-related discrimination on psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming people.

In this study we combined understanding from the gender minority stress and resilience (GMSR) model (Testa, Habarth, Peta, Balsam, & Bockting, 2015) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999, 2012) to test a theoretically integrated and expansive account of the development of psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. Specifically, we constructed a parallel multiple mediation model in which we examined the role of psychological processes deriving from the GMSR model (i.e., internalized transphobia and identity nondisclosure)

Sex work, discrimination, drug use and violence: a pattern for HIV risk among transgender sex workers compared to MSM sex workers and other MSM in Guatemala.

The risk of HIV infection is higher among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to the general population due in part to social and contextual factors. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of alcohol and drug abuse, discrimination and violence among transgender sex workers compared to cisgender male sex workers and cisgender men who had not received money for sex in Guatemala City. In 2010, transgender women and cisgender men who had had sex with men or transgender women were recruited into a cross-sectional behavioural survey. Among t

Twenty-eight focus groups discussions (FGDs) were realized, with a stratification by gender and tradition of medicine (users of folk versus professional medicine). Data were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS: This rural population most exposed to CL in Morocco lacks access to health care in general

Psychohistory and Slavery: Preliminary Issues.

"Psychohistory and Slavery: Preliminary Issues," begins an examination of slavery in the antebellum South. The paper suggests that how slavery and the group-fantasy of white male supremacy were perpetuated among slaveholders is a question of fundamental importance for psychohistorians. The family and childrearing are the focus of attention. Given the ferocity of slavery, it is argued that the psychological and emotional consequences of this barbarism were not limited to the slaves themselves, but had significant impact on the slaveholders as well-their parenting, their children, and their chil

Deceased donor risk factors influencing liver transplant outcome.

As the pressure for providing liver transplantation to more and more candidates increases, transplant programs have begun to consider deceased donor characteristics that were previously considered unacceptable. With this trend, attention has focused on better defining those donor factors that can impact the outcome of liver transplantation. This review examines deceased donor factors that have been associated with patient or graft survival as well as delayed graft function and other liver transplant results.

The influence of gender attitudes on contraceptive use in Tanzania: new evidence using husbands' and wives' survey data.

This paper explores the hypothesis that gender attitude scales (which measure the degree of equity in gender attitudes) are associated with contraceptive use. Four hundred male and female respondents (200 couples) were interviewed using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire. Analyses included comparisons of means and prevalence rates on gender equity indicators, other related factors and socio-demographic characteristics; t-tests to compare mean scores on each gender scale for wives and husbands to identify any significant differences; chi-squared tests to compare associations between individ

Living under surveillance: Gender, psychological distress, and stop-question-and-frisk policing in New York City.

A growing body of research highlights the collateral consequences of mass incarceration, including stop-and-frisk policing tactics. Living in a neighborhood with aggressive policing may affect one's mental health, especially for men who are the primary targets of police stops. We examine whether there is an association between psychological distress and neighborhood-level aggressive policing (i.e., frisking and use of force by police) and whether that association varies by gender. The 2009-2011 New York City (NYC) Stop, Question, and Frisk Database is aggregated to the neighborhood-level (N =

Gender Disparities in Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Older Women: Key Opportunities to Improve Care.

Older women with cardiovascular disease experience lower referral, participation, and completion rates of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), despite its well-established benefits (improved morbidity, mortality, quality of life, and functional capacity). Multiple social and health care system barriers affect participation of this population, including limitations in accessibility and transportation, competing responsibilities as caregivers, and lack of insight among patients and provider regarding the value of CR. With continued advances in technology and the ubiquity of smartphones, alternative CR p
