Early and longitudinal evaluations of treated infants and children and untreated historical patients with congenital toxoplasmosis: the Chicago Collaborative Treatment Trial.

Between December 1981 and May 1991, 44 infants and children with congenital toxoplasmosis were referred to our study group. A uniform approach to evaluation and therapy was developed and is described herein along with the clinical characteristics of these infants and children. In addition, case histories that illustrate especially important clinical features or previously undescribed findings are presented. Factors that contributed to the more severe disabilities included delayed diagnosis and initiation of therapy; prolonged, concomitant neonatal hypoxia and hypoglycemia; profound visual impa

First isolation and molecular characterization of Toxoplasma gondii strains from human congenital toxoplasmosis cases in Monastir, Tunisia.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoon parasite that can cause severe clinical problems such as congenital toxoplasmosis. The distribution of T. gondii genotypes varies from one geographic area to another. So far, little is known about the parasite genotypes in Tunisia, North Africa. The present study aimed isolating and genotyping T. gondii from the amniotic fluid (AF) and placenta of pregnant women in Monastir, Tunisia. Amniotic fluid and/or placenta from 80 women who acquired toxoplasma infection during pregnancy were tested by PCR and/or mouse bioassay. Genotyping of T. gondii isolates from thes

Prevention and treatment of cryptosporidiosis in immunocompromised patients.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is a disease that causes diarrhoea lasting about one to two weeks, sometimes extending up to 2.5 months among the immunocompetent and becoming a more severe life-threatening illness among immunocompromised individuals. Cryptosporidium is a common cause of gastroenteritis. Cryptosporidiosis is common in HIV-infected individuals. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the review was to assess the efficacy of interventions for the treatment and prevention of cryptosporidiosis among immunocompromised individuals. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the following databases for random

[Sampling study on practitioners' attitude to the prevention of infectious endocarditis].

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUNDS AND METHODS: The opinions and the experience of Veneto practitioners about prevention of infective endocarditis were detected through a sample survey among the 386 practitioners of Health and Social Unit Nr 16, 17, and 36 of Veneto Region. The interview was carried out through a questionnaire, sent by mail, asking for: 1) general information on the practitioner's profession; 2) information about the previous experience in diagnosis and care of heart diseases, particularly of infective endocarditis, of atrial septal defect ostium secundum type without pulmonary hypertens

[Management of cervical cellulitis with and without mediastinal extension: report of 17 cases].

OBJECTIVES: Cervical cellulitis is infrequent but serious. The aim of our study was to describe the way we care and to identify certain factors that promote the development of such a condition. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study covering the period 2004 to 2009 and included patients with cervical cellulitis with or without mediastinal extension surgically supported by ENT department of the University Hospital of Dijon. Data were collected clinical, radiological, treatment, type of surgery and complications. RESULTS: Seventeen patients met our inclusion criteria, four of

Review of Myeloma Therapies and Their Potential for Oral and Maxillofacial Side Effects.

Myeloma is a common haematological malignancy in which adverse skeletal related events are frequently seen. Over recent years, treatment for myeloma has evolved leading to improved survival. Antiresorptive therapy is an important adjunct therapy to reduce the risk of bone fractures and to improve the quality of life for myeloma patients; however, this has the potential for unwanted side effects in the oral cavity and maxillofacial region. Osteonecrosis of the jaw related to antiresorptive medications and other myeloma therapies is not uncommon. This review serves to highlight the risk of osteo

[Postnatal follow-up of infants born to mothers with certain Toxoplasma gondii infection: evaluation of prenatal management].

UNLABELLED: The clinical management of perinatal toxoplasmosis involves a gynaecologist during pregnancy and a neonatologist after delivery. Then, in the absence of a uniform approach, early evaluation of infected infants requires a thorough long-term follow-up also in asymptomatic children, who have to be observed for at least one year due to unpredictable sequelae in later life. We retrospectively analyzed pregnancy management of 54 women with certain infection from Toxoplasma gondii (TG) and prospectively enrolled their infants to compare prenatal management with postnatal clinical outcome.

Lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia as markers of disease progression of multiple myeloma: A case report.

Case report: A 64-year-old man was hospitalized in the intensive care unit with pneumonia, lactic acidosis, and hypoglycemia. Investigations revealed a kappa light chain multiple myeloma. The patient underwent chemotherapy by bortezomib, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone. Serum lactate level and glycemia normalized. Evaluation at day 28 showed a disease progression. Lenalidomide was switched for daratumumab, bortezomib, and dexamethasone. In front of the inefficiency of the chemotherapy, the patient underwent third-line chemotherapy by melphalan. There was a correlation between the evolution of

Intestinal Coccidian Infections in Cancer Patients: A Case Series.

Introduction Coccidian protozoa and microsporidian fungi are opportunistic pathogens increasingly implicated in infections in immunosuppressed individuals. These parasites typically infect the intestinal epithelium, resulting in secretory diarrhea and malabsorption. The disease burden and timeline are both greater and longer among immunosuppressed patients. Therapeutic options for immunocompromised individuals are limited. As a result, we wanted to better characterize the disease course and treatment efficacy of these parasitic gastrointestinal infections. Methods We performed a single-center,

Estimation of Abbreviated Cyclosporine A Area under the Concentration-Time Curve in Allogenic Stem Cell Transplantation after Oral Administration.

Measurements of Cyclosporine (CsA) systemic exposure permit its dose adjustment in allogenic stem cell transplantation recipients to prevent graft-versus-host disease. CsA LSSs were developed and validated from 60 ASCT patients via multiple linear regressions. All whole-blood samples were analyzed by fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA-Axym). The 10 models that have used CsA concentrations at a single time point did not have a good fit with AUC(0-12) (R(2) < 0.90). C(2) and C(4) were the time points that correlated best with AUC(0-12 h), R(2) were respectively 0.848, and 0.897. The LSS

Drug Repurposing of Selected Antibiotics: An Emerging Approach in Cancer Drug Discovery.

Drug repurposing is a method of investigating new therapeutic applications for previously approved medications. This repurposing approach to "old" medications is now highly efficient, simple to arrange, and cost-effective and poses little risk of failure in treating a variety of disorders, including cancer. Drug repurposing for cancer therapy is currently a key topic of study. It is a way of exploring recent therapeutic applications for already-existing drugs. Theoretically, the repurposing strategy has various advantages over the recognized challenges of creating new molecular entities, inclu

Potential drug development and therapeutic approaches for clinical intervention in COVID-19.

While the vaccination is now available to many countries and will slowly dissipate to others, effective therapeutics for COVID-19 is still illusive. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has posed an unprecedented challenge to researchers, scientists, and clinicians and affected the wellbeing of millions of people worldwide. Since the beginning of the pandemic, a multitude of existing anti-viral, antibiotic, antimalarial, and anticancer drugs have been tested, and some have shown potency in the treatment and management of COVID-19, albeit others failed to leave any positive impact and a few also became cont
