Investigation of pre-pubertal sex differences in wheel running and social behavior in three mouse strains.

Sex differences in social behaviors exist in mammals during adulthood, and further evidence suggests that sex differences in behavior are present before sexual maturity. In order to model behavioral disorders in animals, it is important to assess baseline sex-related behavioral differences, especially when studying disorders for which sex-related behavioral effects are expected. We investigated the effect of sex on behavior in 3 strains of pre-pubertal mice (C57BL/6, CFW, and CF1) using a wheel-running assay. We found no significant sex differences in latency to run on the wheel or total durat

Valproate modulates the expression of methylphenidate (ritalin) sensitization.

Repeated administration of amphetamine, cocaine, and methylphenidate (MPD) has been reported to elicit behavioral sensitization to their locomotor and stereotypic effects in rodents. GABAergic drugs have been shown to inhibit behavioral effects of stimulants. The objective of the present study was to determine whether single or multiple administration of sodium valproate, a GABA agonist, would prevent the expression of sensitization to the locomotor effect of MPD once it has developed. Twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into three treatment groups: a control group received o

Assaying Mechanonociceptive Behavior in Drosophila Larvae.

Drosophila melanogaster larvae have been extensively used as a model to study the molecular and cellular basis of nociception. The larval nociceptors, class IV dendritic arborization (C4da) neurons, line the body wall of the animal and respond to various stimuli including noxious heat and touch. Activation of C4da neurons results in a stereotyped escape behavior, characterized by a 360° rolling response along the body axis followed by locomotion speedup. The genetic accessibility of Drosophila has allowed the identification of mechanosensory channels and circuit elements required for nocicepti

Cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonism markedly increases dopamine receptor-mediated stereotypies.

The contribution of the endocannabinoid system to dopamine-mediated disorganized behavior in schizophrenia is discussed. We used a model of concurrent stimulation of dopamine D1 and D2 receptors to evaluate the role of this system in dopamine-mediated stereotypies measured in a hole-board test. Pretreatment with the cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichloro-phenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (SR141716A; 1 mg/kg) potentiated stereotyped behavior induced by coadministration of the dopamine D1 receptor agonist SKF 38393 (0.05, 0.1 and 1 mg/k

Comparative efficacy of various physical activity interventions on individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is a promising non-pharmacological intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the most effective intervention regimen remains unclear. This study aimed to compare and rank the effects of different types and doses of physical activity on social communication, stereotyped behaviors, and motor skills in individuals with ASD, thereby providing theoretical guidance for physical activity-based interventions. METHODS: We searched Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo and CNKI from

Behavioral origin of sound-evoked activity in mouse visual cortex.

Sensory cortices can be affected by stimuli of multiple modalities and are thus increasingly thought to be multisensory. For instance, primary visual cortex (V1) is influenced not only by images but also by sounds. Here we show that the activity evoked by sounds in V1, measured with Neuropixels probes, is stereotyped across neurons and even across mice. It is independent of projections from auditory cortex and resembles activity evoked in the hippocampal formation, which receives little direct auditory input. Its low-dimensional nature starkly contrasts the high-dimensional code that V1 uses t

Rett syndrome in Thai female girls: clinical studies.

Rett syndrome consists of a highly complex but consistent set of clinical signs and symptoms. Clinical characteristics consist of microcephaly, delayed psychomotor development, autistic behavior, stereotyped hand-washing, and seizures. Over a period of 14 years (1987-2000), 7 patients with Rett syndrome were evaluated at the Out Patient Unit, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. All seven patients were females aging 1 1/2 to 5 years old when diagnosis was established. All were appearently normal at birth and had developmental regression after a period of time. All of them d

Stereotyped yawning responses induced by electrical and chemical stimulation of paraventricular nucleus of the rat.

Yawning was evoked by electrical or chemical stimulation in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats. To evaluate physiological aspects of yawning, we monitored polygraphic measures as follows; a coordinated motor pattern of yawning was assessed by monitoring breathing [intercostal electromyogram (EMG)], mouth opening (digastric EMG), and stretching of the trunk (back EMG). We also recorded blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and the electrocorticogram (ECoG) to evaluate autonomic function and arousal responses during yawning. A stereotyped yawning response

The Impact of Reported Masculine Behaviors on the Relationship Between Negative Attitudes of Aging and Depression.

Stereotype embodiment theory states that individuals who hold negative aging stereotypes may internalize them, and thus view their own aging process as negative. This study aimed to evaluate how older adult men may be influenced by their adherence to masculinity standards, such as men are expected to be strong and independent, in older adulthood. A sample of 439 heterosexual men aged 55 and older living in the southern United States was analyzed, finding that participating in masculine behaviors moderated the relationship between negative perceptions of aging and depression. Participants who r

Behavioral effects of acute and long-term administration of catnip (Nepeta cataria) in mice.

Catnip or catmint (Nepeta cataria) is a plant used extensively to treat human diseases and in toys for pets. We investigated the effects of acute and long-term administration of the plant on some behaviors of mice. The plant was fed as 10% of the normal diet for 2 h/d for 1 or 7 d. Acute and long-term dosing increased both rearing and locomotion frequencies observed in an open field. Acute exposure to catnip increased stereotyped behavior and susceptibility to seizures, did not interfere with haloperidol-induced catalepsy, and decreased sleeping time after sodium pentobarbital administration.

Detection of Stereotypical Motor Movements in Autism using a Smartwatch-based System.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is often accompanied by stereotypical motor movements. Health professionals typically assess the severity of these behaviors during therapy, which limits observations to a structured clinical setting. Recent advancements in ubiquitous computing and wearable sensors enable an ability to monitor these motor movements objectively and in real-time while children with ASD are in different environments. In this paper, we present a smartwatch-based system designed to detect stereotypical motor movements. To validate the feasibility

Does dizocilpine (MK-801) selectively block the enhanced responsiveness to repeated amphetamine administration?

In order to examine the hypothesis that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are selectively involved in the development of stimulant sensitization, we characterized the interaction between acute and chronic dizocilpine (MK-801) + amphetamine using a detailed behavioral analysis, including concurrent assessment of the locomotor and stereotype components of the stimulant response and continuous monitoring of all the various phases of the emergent sensitization. The results showed that MK-801 (0.125 mg/kg) significantly affected the acute response to amphetamine (0.5, 1.75, 4.0 mg/kg), increasi

Implications of hierarchical Markov models of behavior: on irreversibility, predictability, and dimensionality.

The maturation of quantitative tools for studying the high-level structure of animal behavior, and especially tools which represent spontaneous behavior as a sequence of stereotyped and neurally well-defined 'syllables', demands that the field revisit a fundamental theoretical question: if the coarse structure of behavior can be accurately described by Markov models, what do these models really tell us about behavior? In this work, we explore the theoretical implications of these models and discuss how they allow us to quantitatively formulate questions about the sequence-like nature and effec

Abnormal Repetitive Behaviors and Self-Mutilations in Small Mammals.

Self-mutilation and abnormal repetitive behaviors in small mammals are challenging conditions for veterinary practitioners. The etiology may be difficult to identify, and the treatment is often unrewarding unless the specific underlying cause can be found. Reinforcement of the abnormal behavior may also complicate the treatment. However, medical causes, including painful conditions, should be investigated thoroughly. Owing to the small blood volume of many small exotic mammals and the associated risk of hypovolemia in case of hemorrhage, an hospitalization with potent multimodal analgesia and

Metoprine induced behavioral modifications and brain regional histamine increase in WAG/Rij and Wistar rats.

The effects of metoprine, an inhibitor of histamine N-methyltransferase, on open field activity and brain regional histamine (HA) content were examined in rats with mixed, absence and audiogenic, epilepsy (WAG/Rij-AGS), rats with audiogenic epilepsy (Wistar-AGS) and in non-epileptic control rats (Wistar-nAGS). HA content was increased by metoprine (20mg/kg, i.p.) in the cortex, striatum, thalamus, hypothalamus and hippocampus of the rats from all three tested groups. However, WAG/Rij rats showed a lower rate of metoprine-induced HA accumulation in the striatum and thalamus than Wistar rats. Fo

Opposite modulation of apomorphine- or amphetamine-induced stereotypy by antagonists of CCK receptors.

Stereotyped behavior is elicited by activation of dopaminergic systems with drugs such as apomorphine and amphetamine. In previous studies, we have reported that the sulfated cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) decreased apomorphine-induced stereotypy in animals with normal and supersensitive dopamine receptors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of CCK(1) and CCK(2) receptor antagonists on stereotyped behavior induced by apomorphine or amphetamine. Rats were pretreated with the CCK(1) (SR 27897B; 1-[[2-(4-(2-chlorophenyl) thiazol-2-yl) aminocarbonyl]indolyl]acetic acid;

[Differential effects of ketamine enantiomers on anesthetic levels and glutamate release in the hippocampus].

The anesthetic effects of ketamine enantiomers (40 and 100 mg.kg-1, i.p.) were evaluated in the rat by behavioral parameters such as the orienting response, the tail-pinch test and the spontaneous motor behavior including stereotyped behavior (circling and nodding). The intercellular glutamate concentration in the dorsal hippocampus was measured by brain microdialysis method. The analgesic and sedative effects of the S(+)-ketamine were more potent than those of the R(-)-ketamine at each dose. The incidence of stereotyped behaviors in R(-)-ketamine groups was higher than that of S(+)-ketamine g

From nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia to nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy.

Nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia (NPD) is the term used to describe motor attacks characterized by complex behavior, with dystonic-dyskinetic or ballic movements arising from NREM sleep. NPD together with paroxysmal arousals (PA), the briefest attacks, and episodic nocturnal wanderings (ENW), the most prolonged ones, constitute nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE). PA are sudden awakenings associated with stereotyped dystonic-dyskinetic movements, sometimes accompanied by screaming and a frightened expression. ENW are episodes of agitated ambulation, with complex, sometimes violent, motor behav

Effects of repeated treatment with methamphetamine plus scopolamine and methamphetamine on behavioral sensitization and conditioning.

This study compared repeated treatment with methamphetamine (4.0 mg/kg, i.p.) plus scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) and methamphetamine alone in behavioral sensitization and drug conditioning with respect to a reciprocal balance between the dopaminergic and cholinergic systems. Repeated methamphetamine plus scopolamine treatment induced a more progressive and enduring enhancement of stereotyped behavior than repeated methamphetamine treatment. Methamphetamine plus scopolamine-induced stereotyped behavior was reproduced by challenge injections of not only methamphetamine plus scopolamine and metha

The fight to understand fighting: neurogenetic approaches to the study of aggression in insects.

Aggression is an evolutionarily conserved behavior that evolved in the framework of defending or obtaining resources. When expressed out of context, unchecked aggression can have destructive consequences. Model systems that allow examination of distinct neuronal networks at the molecular, cellular, and circuit levels are adding immensely to our understanding of the biological basis of this behavior and should be relatable to other species up to and including man. Investigators have made particular use of insect models to both describe this quantifiable and stereotyped behavior and to manipulat
