A three-dimensional study of facial mimicry in healthy young adults.

To assess sex-related characteristics in facial movements, and to define a set of reference normal values, 20 healthy young adults (10 men, 10 women) performed six standardized facial movements (maximum smile; free smile; "surprise" with closed mouth; "surprise" with open mouth; right- and left-side eye closures). The three-dimensional coordinates of 21 soft-tissue facial landmarks were recorded by an optoelectronic motion analyzer, their movements computed, and standardized for facial dimensions. Asymmetry indices were calculated. The mouth area had the largest movements. Sex-related differen

Different discharge properties of facial nucleus motoneurons following neurotmesis in a rat model.

Facial nucleus motoneurons innervating the facial expressive muscles are involved in a wide range of motor activities, however, the types of movement related neurons and their electrophysiological transformation after peripheral facial nerve injury haven't been revealed. This study was designed to elucidate the types of facial nucleus motoneurons and their alterations of discharge parameters following peripheral facial nerve injury in vivo. Here we set up a rat model by implanting electrode arrays into the brainstem and recorded the electrophysiological signals of facial nucleus neurons in the

Effects of Electrical Stimulation on Facial Paralysis Recovery after Facial Nerve Injury: A Review on Preclinical and Clinical Studies.

Various methods have been used to improve function and manage facial nerve injury. Although electrical stimulation therapy is frequently used to treat facial paralysis, its effects have been found to vary and no clear standards have been developed. The current review describes the results of preclinical and clinical studies evaluating the effectiveness of electrical stimulation therapy in promoting the recovery of a peripheral facial nerve injury. Evidence is presented showing the efficacy of electrical stimulation in promoting nerve regeneration after peripheral nerve injuries in both animal

An Endoscopic Cap Electrode for Posterior Cricoarythenoid Muscle Stimulation in a Porcine Model.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal pacing (LP) is a highly anticipated therapeutic option for patients suffering from bilateral vocal fold paralysis with synkinesis. Identification of candidate patients requires confirmation of a stimulable posterior cricoidarythenoid muscle (PCA) by neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). A silicone endoscopic cap electrode (ECE50) was designed to be operated as an endoscopic extension tip for selective PCA stimulation and confirmation of a glottic opening movement in a setting comparable to a gastroscopy procedure. METHODS: A porcine animal model (n = 6) was applied

Kallmann syndrome in women: from genes to diagnosis and treatment.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) can be characterized as genetic disorder marked by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. Franz Jozef Kallmann was the first who described this disease in 1944. He suggested, that this disease has hereditary background. At present, six genes are regarded as causal genes of KS. These genes can be listed in chronological order: KAL1, FGFR1, FGF8, CHD7, PROKR2 and PROK2. The sensitivity of molecular testing of KS is only about 30%. Diagnosis based on clinical findings is therefore such important. Cardinal features of patients with KS include hypogonadotropic hypogonadis

Movement disorders in patients with peripheral facial palsy.

Acute unilateral facial paralysis is usually a benign neurological condition that resolves in a few weeks. However, it can also be the source of a transient or long-lasting severe motor dysfunction, featuring disorders of automatic and voluntary movement. This review is organized according to the two most easily recognizable phases in the evolution of facial paralysis: (1). Just after presentation of facial palsy, patients may exhibit an increase in their spontaneous blinking rate as well as a sustained low-level contraction of the muscles of the nonparalyzed side, occasionally leading to blep

Permanent medialization of the paralyzed vocal fold utilizing botulinum toxin and Gelfoam.

The clinical picture of a paralyzed vocal fold often has the same appearance as a subluxated arytenoid, with anterior and medial displacement of the arytenoid and a foreshortened and lax vocal fold. Previous work by the authors has shown that a subluxated arytenoid may be permanently repositioned by reduction and selective injection of the intrinsic laryngeal musculature with botulinum toxin. The injection changes the forces within the larynx, allowing the arytenoid to be brought back to proper position on the cricoid cartilage. This concept has been extended to the paralyzed vocal fold. It ha
