Object-based attention and visual area LO.

We investigated the neural basis of so-called "object-based attention" by examining patient D.F., who has visual form agnosia caused by bilateral damage to the lateral occipital (LO) area of the ventral visual stream. We tested D.F.'s object-based attention in two ways. In the first experiment, we used a spatial cueing procedure to compare the costs associated with shifting attention within versus between two separate outline figures. D.F. did not show the normal advantage of within-object over between-object attention shifts. In the second experiment, we used a complementary paradigm in which

Subdomain Investigation of Executive Functioning in Emerging Adults With and Without ADHD Symptoms.

ADHD often persists from childhood into adulthood yet understanding of the neuropsychological profile of ADHD in emerging adults (18-24 years) is limited and inconsistent. Both diagnosed individuals and those with subthreshold symptoms often struggle with executive functioning. This study examined executive function subdomains in emerging adults with ADHD symptoms. Participants included 71 emerging adults (45 women, 24 men, 2 other) who completed computerized tasks assessing working memory, response inhibition, set shifting, and sustained attention; and questionnaires of ADHD symptoms and cogn

Delivering low-intensity psychological interventions in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-ethnographic synthesis of lay health workers' experiences.

Task-sharing psychological treatment to non-specialist providers, including lay health workers (LHWs), is central to WHO guidance in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). LHWs are community members without formal mental health qualifications who are trained to deliver low-intensity psychological interventions (LIPIs) for depression and anxiety. Although trials show LHW-delivered LIPIs can reduce symptoms, less is known about LHWs' experiences or the relational and emotional demands of delivery. This review synthesised qualitative evidence on LHWs' experiences of delivering LIPIs in LMICs.

Misophonia symptom severity is linked to impaired flexibility and heightened rumination.

Misophonia is a disorder involving sensitivity to certain sounds and related stimuli. Here, we explore the relationship between misophonia and affective flexibility, which describes cognitive shifting abilities in the face of emotion-evoking stimuli. The secondary aim of this study is to test the potential association between misophonia and cognitive flexibility, building upon findings from previous research. The third objective is to examine the relationship between misophonia and rumination. One hundred and forty participants completed the Memory and Affective Flexibility Task (MAFT), design

Associations between executive functions and negative emotions: A moderated mediation analysis of emotion regulation and gender.

BACKGROUND: Although the relationship between executive functions (EFs) and negative emotions has been well documented, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study examines the potential mediating role of emotion regulation and the moderating effect of gender through a moderated mediation model. METHODS: Participants included 604 university students (Mage = 19.05 years, SD = 1.09; 372 females). Inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility were assessed using the Go/No-Go task, the number running memory tasks (1750 ms and 750 ms), and the digit shifting task, respecti

Preserved capacity for scene construction and shifts in perspective after hippocampal lesions.

The hippocampus has long been recognized as important for the formation of long-term memory. Recent work has suggested that the hippocampus might also be important for certain kinds of spatial operations, as in constructing scenes, shifting perspective, or perceiving the geometry of scenes and their boundaries. We explored this proposal using a task similar to one used previously that related hippocampal activity to scenes and their boundaries. In our study, participants viewed scenes from above that displayed walls and towers. After viewing each scene, participants saw a scene from ground lev

Understanding local perspectives on child mental health to strengthen school-based interventions in Darjeeling, India.

BackgroundChild mental health needs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) often go unmet due to a scarcity of specialists. In Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, Tealeaf (Teachers Leading the Frontlines), a task-shifting model in which teachers serve as lay counselors, has shown early promise. We explored stakeholders' culturally held beliefs about causes of child mental health concerns to contextualize Tealeaf's ongoing trial.MethodsWe conducted twelve semi-structured interviews (March-April 2022) with purposively selected principals, teachers, and caregivers. Using qualitative description,

The neural substrate and underlying mechanisms of executive control fluctuations in primates.

Trial-by-trial alterations in response time have been linked to fluctuations of executive control and transient lapses of attention. Here, we report remarkable homologies in performance-dependent fluctuations of response time between humans and monkeys. We examined the effects of selective bilateral lesions in four frontal regions on control fluctuations in the context of a rule-shifting task. Lesions within orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), but not within superior-lateral prefrontal cortex, significantly exaggerated the performance-dependent fluctuations of control and prevented its restoration fol

Offering alphabet support in the Trail Making Test: Increasing validity for participants with insufficient automatization of the alphabet.

Insufficient automatization of the alphabet may falsely impair performance on the Trail Making Test among persons with dyslexia or persons not accustomed to the Latin alphabet. We analyze whether writing the alphabet on top of the test sheet changes performance in these risk groups, and whether alphabet support reduces the complexity of the set-shifting task.One-hundred and seventy patients referred to neuropsychological assessment participated and were given both a TMT-version offering alphabet support and the D-KEFS TMT. The discrepancy between the D-KEFS subtask where lines are drawn succes

Attention to Automatic Movements in Parkinson's Disease: Modified Automatic Mode in the Striatum.

We investigated neural correlates when attending to a movement that could be made automatically in healthy subjects and Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Subjects practiced a visuomotor association task until they could perform it automatically, and then directed their attention back to the automated task. Functional MRI was obtained during the early-learning, automatic stage, and when re-attending. In controls, attention to automatic movement induced more activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex, and rostral supplementary motor area. The motor corte

Impaired cognitive functions in adult-onset primary cranial cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset primary dystonia is thought to be a purely motor disorder. Nevertheless, several studies provided evidence that sensory and psychiatric disturbances may contribute to the clinical spectrum of of dystonia, whereas evidence supporting cognitive impairment is still limited. METHODS: A set of neuropsychological tests was administered to non depressed, non demented patients with cranial-cervical dystonia and healthy control subjects. The test battery included n-Back Task, Wechsler Memory Scale, Trail Making Test version A and B, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. RESULTS: As

When faces signal danger: event-related potentials to emotional facial expressions in animal phobics.

Attentional bias research indicates that specific phobics prioritize the processing of disorder-relevant stimuli, although the time course of attentional allocation to the phobic threat remains unclear. The present study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether a processing bias also exists towards specific facial expressions that are able to signal potential phobic cues in the environment. Fifteen women with snake phobia and 15 healthy controls performed an attention-shifting task in which angry, fearful, disgusted and neutral faces were presented as emotional cues. ERP

Noradrenergic, but not cholinergic, deafferentation of prefrontal cortex impairs attentional set-shifting.

Both norepinephrine and acetylcholine have been shown to be critically involved in mediating attention but there remains debate about whether they serve similar or unique functions. Much of what is known about the role of these neurochemicals in cognition is based on manipulations done at the level of the cell body but these findings are difficult to reconcile with data regarding the unique contribution of cortical subregions, e.g. the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, to attention. In the current study, we directly compared the effects of noradrenergic and cholinergic deafferentation of the rat

Effects of nicotinic therapies on attention and executive functions in chronic low-dose MPTP-treated monkeys.

Chronic administration of low doses of the neurotoxin MPTP to nonhuman primates induces cognitive deficits similar to those seen in early Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, without the confounding effect of significant motor impairment. The present study assessed the extent to which specific attentional and central executive deficits in chronic low dose (CLD) MPTP-treated monkeys could be modified by nicotinic therapies. Four adult male rhesus monkeys were trained to perform attention and executive function tasks and were then administered low doses of MPTP (dose range: 0.025-0.1 mg/kg, i.v.)

Frontostriatal Circuits Alterations Associated with Cognitive Flexibility Deterioration in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported abnormal functional connectivity (FC) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC)-striatum circuit in patients with premanifest Huntington's disease (HD). However, there is a lack of evidence showing persistence of abnormal frontostriatal FC and its relation to cognitive flexibility performance in patients with clinically manifest HD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the resting-state FC integrity of the frontostriatal circuit and its relation to cognitive flexibility in HD patients and healthy con

Task-Based Mapping of Compensatory Strategies and Movement Kinematics After Stroke: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Although compensatory motor strategies are widely described after stroke, there is still no structured synthesis integrating their kinematic characteristics across core functional tasks. This scoping review aimed to map compensatory strategies and movement kinematics in mobility, postural control, and upper-limb tasks after stroke. The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and was registered on the Open Science Framework. Ten databases were searched through August 2024. Studies including individuals post-stroke that used motion analysis to characterize compensatory strategies

The Comparison of Human and Machine Performance in Object Recognition.

Deep learning models have advanced rapidly, leading to claims that they now match or exceed human performance. However, such claims are often based on closed-set conditions with fixed labels, extensive supervised training, and do not considering differences between the two systems. Recent findings also indicate that some models align more closely with human categorisation behaviour, whereas other studies argue that even highly accurate models diverge from human behaviour. Following principles from comparative psychology and imposing similar constraints on both systems, this study investigates
