AIMS: Anomalies of tooth number may not be isolated conditions but may have wider associations in the development of the dentition including tooth size. This study aimed to examine links between hypodontia, supernumerary teeth and crown size, considering the effect on the development of the whole dentition and so increase understanding of the aetiology of these conditions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The patients, who were all of European ancestry, were 60 young adults (30 males and 30 females) with hypodontia and 60 age and sex matched controls together with 60 young adults (39 males and 21 females

The dental pulp may respond favourably or unfavourably to traumatic dental injuries. The most serious unfavourable responses are pulp necrosis and infection of the root canal system. These cause apical periodontitis and/or external inflammatory resorption of the tooth. The following injuries require root canal treatment as part of their emergency management-(A) complicated crown fractures (but some may be suitable for conservative pulp treatments, such as pulp capping, partial pulpotomy or pulpotomy), (B) complicated crown-root fractures, (C) supra-crestal coronal third root fractures and (D)

Supraeruption of the maxillary first molar in the absence of the mandibular first molar was observed in subjects with both normal and pathologic periodontics. Both the migration of the gingival margin and the increase in the crown height were evaluated in terms of the length of time the antagonist tooth had been missing. Values obtained were compared with those of a reference group with complete normal dentitions. The results show that in the first years following the loss of the opposing tooth, supraeruption is mainly due to growth of the periodontium. Later or in the case of periodontal path

Anterior tooth fracture is the most common type of trauma occurring to the dental tissues. Teeth fracturing at or below the gingival level usually have a poor prognosis, with extraction of the tooth being the most probable outcome. Clinical crown lengthening followed by prosthetic rehabilitation is a promising approach toward such cases. The clinical report presented here explains in detail the various treatment modalities available for such cases with special emphasis on orthodontic extrusion/forced eruption.

AIM: Dentigerous cyst (DC) is a disembriogenetic lesion. The cyst wall encloses the crown of an impacted tooth. Several therapeutic approaches have been mentioned in the literature for management of this lesion. Case Report This article describes the management of an adolescent with a mandibular DC surgically treated with extraction of the tooth, enucleation of the cyst and replantation of the permanent tooth involved. Final outcome shows complete healing of the bone socket with eruption of a vital tooth. No orthodontic traction was required. No recurrence was detected at the radiographic foll

Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth with a cone shaped crown and a short root situated between the maxillary central incisors. Supernumerary teeth occur as isolated dental findings or as part of a syndrome. They are frequently discovered when a normal tooth is either delayed in its eruption or displaced often resulting in arch length inadequacy. An early diagnosis allows early intervention, more favourable prognosis and minimal complications. Presented here are two cases of unusual bilateral mesiodens.

The mammalian dentition is uniquely characterized by a combination of precise occlusion, permanent adult teeth and a unique tooth attachment system. Unlike the ankylosed teeth in most reptiles, mammal teeth are supported by a ligamentous tissue that suspends each tooth in its socket, providing flexible and compliant tooth attachment that prolongs the life of each tooth and maintains occlusal relationships. Here we investigate dental ontogeny through histological examination of a wide range of extinct synapsid lineages to assess whether the ligamentous tooth attachment system is unique to mamma

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Complete seating of a single crown may not be possible if the interproximal contacts are excessively tight. Incomplete seating can lead to open margins, inflammation of the gingival tissue, and recurrent dental caries.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the accuracy of 3 different methods of evaluating interproximal contacts when seating a single crown. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-five restorative dentists practicing in the Lincoln, Nebraska, area were polled to determine the methods they used most commonly to evaluate the interproximal contact

The hypothesis that palatally-displaced canines are associated with smaller than average lateral incisors or with congenital absence of adjacent lateral incisors was tested on a West of Scotland population. A retrospective study of the records of orthodontic patients attending Glasgow Dental Hospital was carried out. One-hundred-and-eighty-two subjects with palatally displaced canines were identified. The tooth length of lateral and central incisors was measured on radiographs and the crown widths of lateral incisors were measured on study casts. One-hundred-and-six extracted maxillary lateral

Tooth dislocation (tilting) was recorded in 1,200 skulls from 34 museum collections. The findings of dislocation by tooth type, tooth wear, and abscess location are presented. A model for dislocation based upon the progressive loss of tooth support provides a rational explanation for the phenomenon. Physiological continuous tooth eruption was considered to account for a component of the progressive loss of tooth attachment. The process of attrition, pulp perforation, and dental abscess cavity formation resulted in further, more severe loss of tooth support. Heavy functional forces, in associat

Odontogenic cysts are fluid-filled sacs arising from tooth-developing tissues within the jawbone, often causing swelling, pain, or displacement of teeth. A dentigerous cyst, specifically encapsulating the unerupted tooth's crown, can interfere with dental development by displacing teeth, causing resorption of adjacent teeth, and complicating dental or surgical interventions. This case report represents a long-term follow-up of a 35-year-old male with a large mandibular dentigerous cyst extending to the lower right border of the mandible, associated with a horizontally impacted third molar in t

AIM AND BACKGROUND: The management of crown-root fractures poses significant uncertainty and involves meticulous evaluation of the tooth and supporting structures. The uncertain prognosis associated with crown-root fractures necessitates periodic evaluation.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 15-year-old female presenting with crown-root fracture of the permanent left maxillary incisors was treated by surgical extrusion with rotation for the central incisor, while the lateral incisor was coronally extruded by 2 mm. Root canal treatment was performed after the extrusion procedure, which was followed by full

This clinical report presents the use of a modified polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post and core in order to support a lithium disilicate ceramic crown for a maxillary lateral incisor. When considering post-and-core restorations, material flexibility is essential to prevent root fractures. The low elastic modulus of PEEK (4 GPa) could result in lower root fracture rates, preserving tooth structure and favoring tooth re-restoration if the post fractures. PEEK is biocompatible, presents adequate bond strength with dentin when bonded with a resin cement, and can be used under ceramic restorations be
