White collar rhabdomyolysis with acute kidney injury.

Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome resulting from the disintegration of muscle cell and spillage of toxic intracellular contents into circulation. Strenuous, unaccustomed exercise leads to exertional rhabdomyolysis and cause AKI. We report a 26-year-old female who developed white collar rhabdomyolysis with AKI after performing sit-ups (Super Yoga Brain) for 108 times in temple. She was managed with hemodialysis and supporting therapy. She made a full recovery after 4 weeks. Awareness of this condition and early diagnosis is highlighted.

White matter changes in familial Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) resulting from gene mutations in PSEN1, PSEN2 and APP is associated with changes in the brain. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate changes in grey matter (GM), white matter (WM) and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in FAD. SUBJECTS: Ten mutation carriers (MCs) with three different mutations in PSEN1 and APP and 20 noncarriers (NCs) were included in the study. Three MCs were symptomatic and seven were presymptomatic (pre-MCs). METHODS: Whole-brain GM volume as well as fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) using voxel-

White Matter Microstructure in Idiopathic Craniocervical Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Dystonias are hyperkinetic movement disorders characterized by involuntary muscle contractions resulting in abnormal torsional movements and postures. Recent neuroimaging studies in idiopathic craniocervical dystonia (CCD) have uncovered the involvement of multiple areas, including cortical ones. Our goal was to evaluate white matter (WM) microstructure in subjects with CCD using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analysis. METHODS: We compared 40 patients with 40 healthy controls. Patients were then divided into subgroups: cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, blepharospasm + oromandibul

Age exacerbates HIV-associated white matter abnormalities.

Both HIV disease and advanced age have been associated with alterations to cerebral white matter, as measured with white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and more recently with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). This study investigates the combined effects of age and HIV serostatus on WMH and DTI measures, as well as the relationships between these white matter measures, in 88 HIV seropositive (HIV+) and 49 seronegative (HIV-) individuals aged 23-79 years. A whole-brain volumetric measure of WMH was quantified from FLAI

Persistent unilateral white-out in preterm infant.

We would like to present a case of persistent right sided collapse in a preterm baby with an unexpected diagnosis. Baby X was born floppy requiring resuscitation and was intubated, ventilated and was transferred to NICU. There was decreased air entry on auscultation of right side of the chest, while the rest of the examination was normal. The chest X-ray showed right side white-out suggestive of collapse consolidation. She required significantly high ventilatory pressures to maintain saturations and chest X-ray performed on day 4 remained unchanged with persistent right sided white-out. The CT

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy: cavitary white matter lesions.

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a fatal demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system caused by the opportunistic neurotropic Polyomavirus JCV. PML typically presents in immunocompromised individuals; is considered an AIDS defining condition; and is clinically characterized by cognitive defects, coordination problems, limb paresis, and speech disturbances. MRI can identify the characteristic bilaterally asymmetrical lesions that favor the subcortical frontal and parietal lobes as hypo-intensities on T1-weighted images and as hyper-intensities on T2-weighted images. Cephalometric evaluation of white Brazilian adult skeleton.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to compare cephalometric norms of white Brazilian adults with the values described by Tweed, who measured white North American adults. Sexual dimorphism was also evaluated, and male and female facial features were compared. METHODS: Samples were obtained from 40 lateral cephalograms and divided into groups of 20, according to patient's gender. The radiographs were analyzed using the computer-assisted Tweed cephalometric analysis and the 2.0 Radiocef software. Results were analyzed statistically using the Student's t test for genders and ethnicities. The l

Noncystic white matter injury--a case report.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in preterm infants at term-equivalent age demonstrated that apart from cystic periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), noncystic white matter injury may take place, detected as diffuse excessive high signal intensity (DEHSI) in the white matter on T2-weighted imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain is conducted in few neonatal intensive care units. Consequently, the literature on the subject lacks descriptions of sequelae of noncystic white matter injury in premature newborns with very low birth weight (VLBW). We present the results of a three-

[Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in Ebstein's anomaly].

The abnormal development of the tricuspid valve in patients with Ebstein's anomaly results in several activation abnormalities including delayed intraatrial conduction, right bundle branch block, and ventricular preexcitation. In the present review, the aim was to define the ECG characteristics before and after ablation of an accessory A-V pathway in patients with Ebstein's anomaly. In a series of 224 patients studied at the Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia "Ignacio Chávez", Sixty-four patients (28%) had documented tachycardia. Thirty-three patients with recurrent tachycardia were found to ha

Hypertrophic pseudofolliculitis in white renal transplant recipients.

Renal transplant recipients (RTRs) are susceptible to many cutaneous disorders, including drug-induced skin changes. Hypertrichosis, sebaceous hyperplasia and gingival hyperplasia are well-recognized effects of ciclosporin, one of the immunosuppressants commonly used in RTRs. Pseudofolliculitis barbae usually affects hair-bearing areas of skin in men with darkly pigmented skin who shave on a regular basis. We describe five cases of hyperplastic pseudofolliculitis occurring in white RTRs taking ciclosporin as part of their immunosuppressive regimen. All five had involvement of the chin, the cla

White matter damage in neonatal enterovirus meningoencephalitis.

The authors report six neonates with enteroviral meningoencephalitis. Five infants presented with prolonged seizures, and one presented with systemic enteroviral disease. Cranial ultrasonography showed increased echogenicity in the periventricular white matter, and MRI confirmed mild to severe white matter damage in all infants, which looked similar to periventricular leukomalacia. Two infants developed cerebral palsy: one was neurologically suspect at age 18 months, and three were developmentally normal.
