A new, highly sensitive HPLC assay method using an electrochemical detector (ECD) for multiple assay of vitamin D metabolites is reported. The assay involves extracting lipids from plasma with methylene chloride and methanol, purification on Zorbax SIL column with 5.5% (v/v) iso-propanol in hexane and quantification by HPLC-ECD. BACKGROUND: Temporary external fixators are often used to stabilize fractures when definitive fracture surgery must be delayed. Sometimes, external fixators are left in place during repeat operations, including definitive internal fixation of tibial pilon and tibial plateau fractures. It is unknown how well current surgical preparation sterilizes these devices, which become part of the surgical field. Our hypothesis was that our institution's standard surgical preparation creates a low rate of culture-positive environments on external fixators at the time of surgical skin incision.

OBJECTIVE: This article assesses the degree of variability in the current practice of skin antiseptics used in Canadian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and different experiences related to each antiseptic used.
METHODS: An anonymous survey was distributed to a clinical representative of each of the 124 Canadian level II and level III NICUs.

Antiseptic solutions are commonly used for skin care but are not always safe. In preterm infants, application of antiseptic solutions can lead to serious burns. We report surprising results for the self-assembly of lecithin (a common phospholipid) in water-ethanol mixtures. Lecithin forms vesicles (∼100 nm diameter) in water. These vesicles are transformed into small micelles (∼5 nm diameter) by a variety of destabilizing agents such as single-tailed surfactants and alcohols.
