Clinical epidemiology of community-acquired pneumonia in children before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and independent risk factors analysis for severe community-acquired pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic may have created an 'immunity debt', altering the epidemiology and aetiology of paediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). However, multi-centre data on these changes and contemporary risk factors for severe CAP remain limited. We therefore aimed to analyse clinical characteristics and pathogen composition of CAP in children before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify independent risk factors associated with severe CAP. METHODS: We collected clinical data from paediatric inpatients diagnosed with CAP at 13 hospitals in 13 provinces of

A study of the predictive value of transcranial doppler ultrasound for intracranial infections and the distribution of causative organisms.

This study hypothesizes that elevated cerebral middle artery blood flow parameters (systolic peak velocity Vs, end-diastolic velocity Vd, and mean velocity Vm) detected by transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) can predict postoperative intracranial infections in hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage patients. The primary objective is to validate TCD's predictive value for postoperative intracranial infections, with secondary objectives including analyzing the distribution characteristics of pathogenic bacteria and factors influencing infection. This retrospective cohort study enrolled 127 HICH

Potential Microorganisms from Bronchial Lavage Fluid in Bronchiectasis Patients: Bacteria, Nontuberculous Mycobacteria, and Fungi.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease characterized by irreversible bronchial dilation, often accompanied by persistent infections. Compared to sputum, the microbiological results of bronchial lavage fluid (BLF) from stable bronchiectasis patients are typically less explored. There is emerging evidence on the role of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in the progression of bronchiectasis. This study aims to investigate the microbiological profiles of BLF and the rate of NTM detection in stable bronchiectasis patients. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational multicen

Clinical Outcomes of Early vs. Late Tracheostomy in Ventilated COVID-19 Patients.

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic prompted a significant use of intensive care resources for managing hypoxic respiratory failure. A substantial portion of these patients required mechanical ventilation. While intubation is common, its impact on mortality improvement has been questionable. Tracheostomies have become crucial for patients needing prolonged ventilation. However, tracheostomies also risk infections, ranging from early-stage mild cellulitis to later-stage nosocomial pneumonia. Our study evaluates the incidence of bacterial infections in COVID-19 pat

Assessing Clinician Utilization of Next-Generation Antibiotics Against Resistant Gram-Negative Infections in U.S. Hospitals : A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. antibiotic market failure has threatened future innovation and supply. Understanding when and why clinicians underutilize recently approved gram-negative antibiotics might help prioritize the patient in future antibiotic development and potential market entry rewards. OBJECTIVE: To determine use patterns of recently U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved gram-negative antibiotics (ceftazidime-avibactam, ceftolozane-tazobactam, meropenem-vaborbactam, plazomicin, eravacycline, imipenem-relebactam-cilastatin, and cefiderocol) and identify factors associated with th

Visualized Analysis of Global Studies on Cervical Spondylosis Surgery: A Bibliometric Study Based on Web of Science Database and VOSviewer.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are the most widely used invasive devices among inpatients. Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) are serious yet preventable events for patients. Although the contribution of PIVCs towards these infections is gradually being recognised, its role in the Spanish setting is yet to be determined. We aimed to estimate the rate and incidence of PIVC failure at Manacor hospital (Spain) as baseline within a wider quality improvement initiative. METHODS: Tips from all PIVC removed during December 2017 and January 2018 in hospital wards we

Succession and persistence of microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance genes associated with International Space Station environmental surfaces.

BACKGROUND: The International Space Station (ISS) is an ideal test bed for studying the effects of microbial persistence and succession on a closed system during long space flight. Culture-based analyses, targeted gene-based amplicon sequencing (bacteriome, mycobiome, and resistome), and shotgun metagenomics approaches have previously been performed on ISS environmental sample sets using whole genome amplification (WGA). However, this is the first study reporting on the metagenomes sampled from ISS environmental surfaces without the use of WGA. Metagenome sequences generated from eight defined

Prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens isolated from febrile neutropenic cancer patients with bloodstream infections in Egypt and new synergistic antibiotic combinations.

INTRODUCTION: Bloodstream infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) are among the most frequent complications in immunocompromised cancer patients because of their considerable morbidity and mortality. Several guidelines on antimicrobial therapy have addressed empirical treatment for such serious infections; however, the emergence of microbial resistance has become a significant problem worldwide. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, starting from November 2015 to October 2016, a total of 529 blood specimens were collected from febrile neutropenic cancer patients

Bacterial pathogens were detected from human exhaled breath using a novel protocol.

It is generally believed that influenza outbreak is associated with breath-borne transmission of viruses, however relevant evidence is little for that of respiratory bacterial infections. On another front, point-of-care infection diagnostic methods at the bedside are significantly lacking. Here, we used a newly developed protocol of integrating an exhaled breath condensate (EBC) collection device (PKU BioScreen) and Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) to investigate what bacterial pathogens can be directly exhaled out from humans. Exhaled breath condensates were collected from human

Epithelio- Myoepithelial Carcinoma of Masseteric Space: a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging pathogen capable of causing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). It has the ability to survive on environmental surfaces for months, making transmission difficult to control. Our report describes the investigation and restriction of an outbreak of A.baumannii in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and multi-modal infection control measures. METHODS: A prospective surveillance of HAIs was initiated in the NICU at the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital (PSCUH) in Latvia on 1/9/2012 and identified

Streptococcus pneumoniae coinfection is correlated with the severity of H1N1 pandemic influenza.

BACKGROUND: Initial reports in May 2009 of the novel influenza strain H1N1pdm estimated a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.6%, similar to that of seasonal influenza. In July 2009, however, Argentina reported 3056 cases with 137 deaths, representing a CFR of 4.5%. Potential explanations for increased CFR included virus reassortment or genetic drift, or infection of a more vulnerable population. Virus genomic sequencing of 26 Argentinian samples representing both severe and mild disease indicated no evidence of reassortment, mutations associated with resistance to antiviral drugs, or genetic drift
