The use of electromyography in angiology.

The author of the present study examined electric activity of the muscle in three types of chronic arterial occlusions, i.e. in obliterating atherosclerosis, obliterating thromboangiitis and diabetic angiopathy. He obtained two different electromyographic patterns. One, present in patients suffering from obliterating atherosclerosis, showed signs of a peripheral nerve-damage (characterized by broad action-potentials) and another, found in patients with obliterating thromboangiitis and in diabetics suffering from diabetic angiopathy, with a pattern corresponding to a combined injury--of impaire

Determinants of outcome after surgical treatment of pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries.

OBJECTIVES: Identification of variables influencing surgical outcome in patients treated for pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries. METHODS: A total of 90 consecutive patients (median age, 12 months; range, 20 days to 35 years), who had primarily undergone either 1-stage unifocalization (n = 69) or palliation to promote native pulmonary arterial development (n = 21), were studied. Chromosome 22q11 deletion had occurred in 37% of the cases. Ventricular septal defect closure was accomplished in 70 patients (78%), with a mean postoperative

Interaction of basal ganglia infarction with bridging therapy vs mechanical thrombectomy on parenchymal hemorrhage: A secondary analysis of the DIRECT-MT trial.

UNLABELLED: Importance Hemorrhagic transformation (HT), particularly parenchymal hematoma (PH), is a critical complication of reperfusion therapy for acute ischemic stroke, potentially offsetting the benefits of mechanical thrombectomy (MT). Whether adding intravenous thrombolysis (bridging therapy) exacerbates this risk in patients with basal ganglia infarction (BGI) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether bridging therapy is associated with increased PH risk in patients with acute ischemic stroke who have BGI, compared with those without. We hypothesized that bridging therapy would be

Comparison of atherectomy, drug-eluting balloon, and combined treatment efficiency by near infrared spectroscopy.

Rat inferior caval vein (ICV) ligature and particular new insights with the stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157.

UNLABELLED: Rat inferior caval vein (ICV) ligation (up to the right ovarian vein (ROV)) commonly represents a recapitulation of Virchow: with ligation leading to vessel injury, stasis, thrombosis and hemodynamic changes. We revealed that BPC 157's therapy collectively attenuated or counteracted all these events and the full syndrome. METHODS: We applied BPC 157 (10 μg, 10 ng/kg) as an early regimen or as a delayed therapy. Assessment includes gross assessment by microcamera; microscopy, venography, bleeding, blood pressure, ECG, thermography, MDA and NO-level in plasma and ICV, and gene expre

Portal biliopathy diagnosed using color Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

Portal biliopathy is a morphological abnormality of the biliary ductal and gallbladder wall associated with portal hypertension. A patient with essential thrombocythemia was initially diagnosed with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO). The contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) findings were similar to those of cholangiocarcinoma or sclerosing cholangitis. However, color Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US) were more specific. The paracholedocheal veins around the bile ducts appeared as beads soon after the injection of contrast medium, followed by linear enhancement of t

Intentional coverage of the celiac artery during thoracic endovascular aortic repair.

Intentional coverage of the celiac artery (CA) can extend the distal landing zone necessary for thoracic endovascular aortic repair. A comprehensive review identified 93 cases in 17 reports describing this technique. The majority (87%) were elective procedures. Prior to endograft deployment, 21 patients underwent CA embolization. Of the remaining, three developed type II endoleaks from the CA requiring treatment. The superior mesenteric artery (SMA) was stented in 18 patients during the operative procedure, with one patient undergoing delayed stent placement. There were five iliac artery injur

Pelvic arterial embolisation in a trauma patient with a pre-existing aortobifemoral graft.

Pelvic fractures secondary to blunt trauma are associated with a significant mortality rate due to uncontrolled bleeding. Interventional radiology (IR) can play an important and central role in the management of such patients, offering definitive minimally invasive therapy and avoiding the need for high-risk surgery. Rapid access to whole-body computed tomography has been shown to improve survival in polytrauma patients and allows rapid diagnosis of vascular injury and assessment of suitability for endovascular therapy. IR can then target and treat the specific area of bleeding. Embolisation o

Repeated and targeted transfer of angiogenic plasmids into the infarcted rat heart via ultrasound targeted microbubble destruction enhances cardiac repair.

AIMS: Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) uses ultrasound energy to selectively deliver genes into the myocardium using plasmids conjugated to microbubbles. We hypothesized that repeated delivery of stem cell-mobilizing genes could boost the ability of this therapy to enhance cardiac repair and ventricular function after a myocardial infarction. METHODS AND RESULTS: Beginning 7 days after coronary artery ligation, stem cell factor (SCF) and stromal cell-derived factor (SDF)-1α genes were administered to adult rats using 1, 3, or 6 UTMD treatments (repeat 1, 3, and 6 groups) at

Arterial spin-labeling MR imaging measurements of timing parameters in patients with a carotid artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Arterial spin-labeling (ASL) with image acquisition at multiple delay times can be exploited in perfusion MR imaging to visualize and quantify the temporal dynamics of arterial blood inflow. In this study, we investigated the consequences of an internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion and collateral blood flow on regional timing parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen functionally independent patients with a symptomatic ICA occlusion (15 men, 2 women; mean age, 57 years) and 29 sex- and age-matched control subjects were investigated. ASL at multiple delay times was

Reconstituted high-density lipoprotein stimulates differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells and enhances ischemia-induced angiogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels have an inverse correlation with incidence of ischemic heart disease as well as other atherosclerosis-related ischemic conditions. However, the molecular mechanism by which HDL prevents ischemic disease is not fully understood. Here, we investigated the effect of HDL on differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells and angiogenesis in murine ischemic hindlimb model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Intravenous injection of reconstituted HDL (rHDL) significantly augmented blood flow recovery and increased capillary density in the ischemic leg. rHD

Role of Fas/Fas ligand interaction in ischemia-induced collateral vessel growth.

Fas ligand (FasL) is a death factor that induces apoptosis in cells bearing its receptor, Fas. Accumulating evidence indicates that the Fas/FasL system is involved not only in apoptosis but also in cell-activation signals. Recently, it was reported that local stimulation of Fas in vivo using an agonistic antibody triggers inflammatory cell infiltration and neoangiogenesis independently of apoptosis. On the other hand, Fas/FasL interaction has been proposed to control the growth and development of new subretinal vessels. Here, we evaluated the potential involvement of Fas/FasL interaction in co

Constitutive expression of phVEGF165 after intramuscular gene transfer promotes collateral vessel development in patients with critical limb ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have indicated that angiogenic growth factors can stimulate the development of collateral arteries, a concept called "therapeutic angiogenesis." The objectives of this phase 1 clinical trial were (1) to document the safety and feasibility of intramuscular gene transfer by use of naked plasmid DNA encoding an endothelial cell mitogen and (2) to analyze potential therapeutic benefits in patients with critical limb ischemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: Gene transfer was performed in 10 limbs of 9 patients with nonhealing ischemic ulcers (n=7/10) and/or rest pain (n=10/10

Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor Increases Native Collateral Blood Flow to Improve Cardiac Function and Induce Ventricular Remodeling After Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Background We previously found that the structural defects of the coronary collateral microcirculation reserve (CCMR) prevent these preformed collateral vessels from continuously delivering the native collateral blood and supporting the ischemic myocardium in rats. Here, we tested whether these native collaterals can be remodeled by artificially increasing pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) expression and demonstrated the mechanism for this stimulation. Methods and Results We performed intramyocardial gene delivery (PEDF-lentivirus, 2×107 TU) along the left anterior descending coronary a

Proangiogenic potency of MUC18 in arteriosclerotic disease.

AIM: Stenotic peripheral and dilatative arteriosclerotic diseases have different pathomechanism although associations between both diseases are well known. The adhesion molecule MUC18 is a cell membrane glycoprotein also known as the melanoma cell adhesion molecule. As MUC18 has proangiogenic potency in melanoma and prostate cancer this study investigated the role of MUC18 in patients with stenotic or dilatative arteriosclerotic disease as a putative biochemical marker. METHODS: Using qRT-PCR, Western Blot and immunohistochemistry techniques, the expression of MUC18 in arteriosclerotic arteri
