Intracranial aspergillosis involving the internal auditory canal and inner ear in an immunocompetent patient.

We report the MR imaging findings in a case of intracranial aspergillosis involving the internal auditory canal (IAC) and inner ear in an immunocompetent patient. The presence of rim enhancement of the vestibulocochlear nerve, abnormal signal intensity involving the labyrinth, and adjacent meningeal enhancement might help clinicians to make a correct diagnosis in patients with a mass in the IAC and previous history of ear surgery.

Postacute Sequelae of COVID-19 Across 12 Major Health Domains and 141 Diseases in Individuals With Mental Illness Among COVID-19 Survivors: A Population-Based Cohort Study in South Korea.

Understanding whether individuals with mental illness, who face challenges related to healthcare barriers, are more vulnerable to postacute sequelae of COVID-19 is limited. Here, we investigated the potential association between pre-existing mental illness and postacute sequelae of COVID-19 across 12 major health domains and 141 specific diseases in COVID-19 survivors. The large-scale, population-based cohorts from South Korea (K-COV-N cohort) used in the study included 8 632 221 individuals aged 20 years or older who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2022

Postoperative complications of microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm: lessons from experience of 2040 cases.

Microvascular decompression (MVD) is an effective and safe treatment option that offers the prospect of definitive cure for hemifacial spasm (HFS). However, there are potential risks of complications for MVD associated with retromastoid suboccipital craniectomy (RmSOC) and cranial nerves in particular. The purpose of this study was to identify clinical characteristics of possible complications after MVD for HFS and to establish appropriate management concept of these complications. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 2040 patients who underwent RmSOC with MVD for HFS at Samsung medi

Atypical presentations of malignant otitis externa.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant otitis externa is a life-threatening infection of the skull base. Its presentation is not always typical. CASE REPORTS: We report three cases of malignant otitis externa which illustrate the diversity of its clinical manifestations and the difficulties in its diagnosis. DISCUSSION: The perception of malignant otitis externa as an infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in diabetic patients is not always correct. The adoption of diagnostic criteria could be helpful in identifying atypical cases.

Surgery of idiopathic malleus fixation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare 2 different surgical techniques used in treatment of malleus fixation syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study including 24 patients (25 ears). In 11 of them, the attical fixation was removed via a transmastoid approach without disruption of the ossicular chain. In 14 patients, an ossiculoplasty was performed via a transcanal approach; the malleus head was removed with the incus, and the ossicular chain was reconstructed either by incus interposition (9 cases) or by using a partial ossicular replacement prosthesis (5 cases). The hearing results were ana

Management of an "Ear Camp" for children in Namibia.

OBJECTIVE: In this publication, we present our experiences with managing an "Ear Camp" in northern Namibia, where the population is predominantly black. Medical coverage for ear problems is poor in this part of the country. METHODS: Within 10 days, 38 children (median age 12 years) were operated mainly for (sub) total defects of the tympanic membrane. In two cases, an open cavity had to be created because of a cholesteatoma. We performed a tympanoplasty type I in 18 cases and a tympanoplasty type III in 20 cases. Additionally, in 8 cases an antrotomy and in another 8 cases a mastoidectomy was

Fibrous Dysplasia of the Temporal Bone with External Auditory Canal Stenosis and Secondary Cholesteatoma.

Fibrous dysplasia is a slowly progressive benign fibro-osseous disease, rarely occurring in temporal bones. In these cases, most bony lesions developed from the bony part of the external auditory canals, causing otalgia, hearing impairment, otorrhea, and ear hygiene blockade and probably leading to secondary cholesteatoma. We presented the medical history of a 24-year-old woman with temporal monostotic fibrous dysplasia with secondary cholesteatoma. The initial presentation was unilateral conductive hearing loss. A hard external canal tumor contributing to canal stenosis and a near-absent tymp

Initial experiments to develop a MEMS transducer for a new implantable audioprosthesis to substitute the tympanic-ossicular system.

CONCLUSION: We tested one prototype of a new audioprosthesis including the audioprocessor, the implemented algorithms and fitting platform in a small group of selected patients with mixed hypoacusis due to earlier bilateral radical mastoidectomy. It was effective to compensate the conductive and the neurosensory components of those patients. Results regarding the energy, frequency and other requirements of the output transduction make it possible to develop a suitable actuator with the available Micro-Electromechanic-Machine-System (MEMS) technology to substitute the conventional transducer of

Hearing preservation in microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Sensorineural hearing loss is a disturbing complication of microvascular decompression (MVD) for trigeminal neuralgia with an incidence of 1% to 23.8%. Cerebellar retraction with increasing I-V interpeak latency (IPL) during intraoperative brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) has been identified as the chief cause of acoustic injury. This study was designed to eliminate cerebellar retraction by a modification of the standard suboccipital craniectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Nine consecutive patients undergoing surgery for trigeminal neuralgia were prospectively selected for
