Ticks are more suitable than red foxes for monitoring zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in northeastern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Northeastern Italy is a hotspot for several tick-borne pathogens, transmitted to animals and humans mainly by Ixodes ricinus. Here we compare the results of molecular monitoring of ticks and zoonotic TBPs over a six-year period, with the monitoring of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in an endemic area. RESULTS: In the period 2011-2016, 2,578 ticks were collected in 38 sites of 20 municipalities of Belluno Province. Individual adults (264), pooled larvae (n = 330) and nymphs (n = 1984) were screened for tick-borne encephalitis virus, Borrelia burgdorferi (s.l.), Rickettsia spp., Babesia

Vector-borne transmission of Besnoitia besnoiti by blood-sucking and secretophagous flies: epidemiological and clinicopathological implications.

BACKGROUND: Bovine besnoitiosis has been recently diagnosed in a three-parted herd of 796 Aubrac and Charolais beef cattle in Hungary. A large scale serological, histological and molecular survey was initiated in order to uncover important factors in the local epidemiology of the disease. FINDINGS: Blood samples were collected (three times from the whole herd, and repeatedly from selected animals) for serological screening by ELISA. In addition, various organs from aborted fetuses and newborn calves, skin and colostrum samples of seropositive heifers/cows, and ticks collected from the cattle

Biological implications of longevity in dairy cows: 2. Changes in methane emissions and efficiency with age.

Previous studies indicated that absolute CH4 emissions and CH4 yield might increase and that milk production efficiency might decrease with age in cattle. Both would make strategies to increase longevity in dairy cattle less attractive. These aspects were experimentally determined in Brown Swiss cattle distributed continuously across a large age range. Thirty lactating dairy cows (876-3,648 d of age) received diets consisting of hay, corn silage, and grass pellets supplemented with 0 or 5kg of concentrate per day. Twelve heifers (199-778 d of age) received hay only. Cows and heifers were membe

Development and validation of a recombinant Omp19+31-based indirect hemagglutination assay for serological diagnosis of bovine and ovine brucellosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Brucellosis remains a major zoonotic disease affecting livestock production and public health worldwide, particularly in endemic regions such as Kazakhstan. Conventional serological assays used for animal brucellosis diagnosis are often limited by cross-reactivity associated with lipopolysaccharide-based antigens, leading to false-positive results and unnecessary culling of animals. The indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA) is a simple and economical serological method; however, its diagnostic specificity requires improvement. This study aimed to develop and validate a reco

Rapid and visual dual-color lateral flow immunoassay for african swine fever virus antibody detection.

African swine fever (ASF), an acute infectious disease with a high mortality rate, poses considerable challenges to the development of the global swine industry and socio-economic stability. At present, given the lack of commercial vaccines or effective therapeutic methods, the primary strategy for its management relies on rapid diagnosis and culling of infected animals. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop sensitive, simple, and rapid detection methods. In this study, a latex microsphere (LM)-based dual-color lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was designed for the detection of African swine

Causes of morbidity and mortality in free-ranging Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Switzerland, 2000-2022.

Health monitoring based on post-mortem examination is essential for the management of endangered animal species. This is especially true for reintroduced species living in small populations with low genetic diversity, such as the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in Switzerland. Thanks to systematic post-mortem examinations, the Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health (FIWI), University of Bern, has acquired a comprehensive view of the lynx health in Switzerland. This study provides an updated overview of the causes of morbidity and mortality in the Eurasian lynx in Switzerland from 2000 to 2022. A tot

Bayesian latent class analysis for evaluating diagnostic performance of three serological tests of bovine brucellosis in Pakistan.

Bovine brucellosis is a major zoonotic disease in Pakistan, yet diagnostic tests used in national surveillance have never been validated under field conditions. This cross-sectional study estimated the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of three commonly used bovine brucellosis serological tests, viz. Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT), Serum agglutination test (SAT), and indirect ELISA (iELISA), and the true prevalence of the disease in the study area using Bayesian latent class analysis (BLCA). Serum samples from 1000 animals (507 cattle, 493 buffaloes) across four districts (Faisalabad, Jhang

Unusual congenital polydactyly in mini-pigs from the breeding group of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (Novosibirsk, Russia).

The article describes a new phenomenon in the breeding group of mini-pigs at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG, Novosibirsk): polydactyly (extra digits), which is unusual because the additional digits are situated at the lateral surface of legs or at the lateral and medial ones. This anomaly was f irst found here in 2017 in adult animals intended for culling due to incorrect positioning of the legs caused by f lexor tendon laxity and resulting in weight-bearing on the palmar surface of the proximal phalanges ("bear's paw"). Therefore, the polydactyly of mini-pigs has a pronounced neg

Genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii from pigs in Yucatan, Mexico.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution. The parasite exhibits strong geographical patterns of strain variation with contrasting high levels of diversity across South America and restricted variation across North America. Little is known about the diversity of strains in the transitional area between the two continents. Here we present data on the prevalance and diversity of Toxoplasma gondii in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, through a study in commercially reared pigs. A survey of 12 farms found evidence of circulating T. gondii DNA in 125 of 632 blood samples (19.8%,

Neuropeptide signaling differentially affects phase maintenance and rhythm generation in SCN and extra-SCN circadian oscillators.

Circadian rhythms in physiology and behavior are coordinated by the brain's dominant circadian pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and its receptor, VPAC(2), play important roles in the functioning of the SCN pacemaker. Mice lacking VPAC(2) receptors (Vipr2(-/-)) express disrupted behavioral and metabolic rhythms and show altered SCN neuronal activity and clock gene expression. Within the brain, the SCN is not the only site containing endogenous circadian oscillators, nor is it the only site of VPAC(2) receptor expr

Recent progress and major gaps in the vaccine development for African swine fever.

The swine industry across the globe is recently facing a devastating situation imparted by a highly contagious and deadly viral disease, African swine fever. The disease is caused by a DNA virus, the African swine fever virus (ASFV) of the genus Asfivirus. ASFV affects both wild boars and domestic pigs resulting in an acute form of hemorrhagic fever. Since the first report in 1921, the disease remains endemic in some of the African countries. However, the recent occurrence of ASF outbreaks in Asia led to a fresh and formidable challenge to the global swine production industry. Culling of the i

Wildlife disease ecology in changing landscapes: Mesopredator release and toxoplasmosis.

Changing ecosystem dynamics are increasing the threat of disease epidemics arising in wildlife populations. Several recent disease outbreaks have highlighted the critical need for understanding pathogen dynamics, including the role host densities play in disease transmission. In Australia, introduced feral cats are of immense concern because of the risk they pose to native wildlife through predation and competition. They are also the only known definitive host of the coccidian parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, the population-level impacts of which are unknown in any species. Australia's native wild

The role of growth retardation in lasting effects of neonatal dexamethasone treatment on hippocampal synaptic function.

BACKGROUND: Dexamethasone (DEX), a synthetic glucocorticoid, is commonly used to prevent or lessen the morbidity of chronic lung disease in preterm infants. However, evidence is now increasing that this clinical practice negatively affects somatic growth and may result in long-lasting neurodevelopmental deficits. We therefore hypothesized that supporting normal somatic growth may overcome the lasting adverse effects of neonatal DEX treatment on hippocampal function. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To test this hypothesis, we developed a rat model using a schedule of tapering doses of DEX simi

Genetic parameters and genomic regions associated with horn fly resistance in organic Holstein cattle.

Horn flies (Haematobia irritans [L.]) contribute to major economic losses of pastured cattle operations, particularly in organic herds because of limitations on control methods that can be used. The objectives of this research were to determine if resistance to horn flies is a heritable trait in organic Holstein cattle, determine associations with yield traits, and to detect genomic regions associated with fly infestation. Observations of fly load were recorded from 1,667 pastured Holstein cows, of which 640 were genotyped, on 13 organic dairies across the United States. Fly load score was det

Canine visceral leishmaniasis: Detection of Leishmania spp. genome in peripheral blood of seropositive dogs by real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR).

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis caused by the protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Among the species, L. infantum and/or L. infantum (chagasi) are the most important species affecting the Americas. Domestic dogs are the main reservoir of the parasite and participate effectively in the parasite' transmission cycle. The Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis Control Program (PCLV) adopted in Brazil present as strategies the vector control, health education and serological diagnosis of CVL in dogs followed by culling of the seropositive ones. The resolution to eliminate seropositive dogs by euthana

Zoonotic leishmaniasis in China: Current status and challenges to elimination.

UNLABELLED: Leishmaniasis is expanding worldwide along with sand fly vectors. In China, particular challenges arise from its broad climatic and ecological gradients, the diversity of phlebotomine sand fly species, and numerous potential mammalian and reptilian hosts. Two ecological types of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) are recognized: anthroponotic VL (AVL) caused by Leishmania donovani and zoonotic VL (ZVL) caused by Leishmania infantum, which is subdivided into mountain-type (MT-ZVL) where dogs are the main reservoir, and desert-type (DT-ZVL) with uncertain reservoirs. Over the last decade, V

Development and Bayesian validation of a competitive inhibition ELISA for detection of antibodies against Brucella abortus in cattle.

Bovine brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella abortus, responsible for abortions in cows. It is endemic in low- and middle-income countries, where the brucellosis control and eradication programs are based on compulsory vaccination, detection of infected cattle through serologic assays, and culling of infected animals at slaughterhouses. The development of high sensitivity and specificity, and low-cost serologic assays guarantee their implementation in countries where the disease is endemic. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a competitive inhibition enzyme-

Review: What are the challenges facing the table egg industry in the next decades and what can be done to address them?

There has been a strong consumer demand to take welfare into account in animal production, including table eggs. This is particularly true in Europe and North America but increasingly around the world. We review the main demands that are facing the egg industry driven by economic, societal and sustainability goals. We describe solutions already delivered by research and those that will be needed for the future. Already table egg consumption patterns have seen a major shift from cage to non-cage production systems because of societal pressures. These often feature free-range and organic product
