The blinking eye as a window into tinnitus: A new animal model of tinnitus in the macaque.

Tinnitus is a highly prevalent, largely untreatable auditory disorder, characterized by the perception of phantom sound often in the form of incessant ringing or hissing. Despite longstanding research with animal models, its underlying pathophysiological causes remain poorly understood. Given recent data characterizing tinnitus as a disorder with a strong neurocognitive component, progress in the field might be hastened by testing a wider spectrum of animal models, including nonhuman primates, and by developing alternative measurement techniques of tinnitus, especially in animals. [The use of the German APHAB for quality control in hearing aid fitting in an ENT-office. Comparison of our results with the given US-norm].

OBJECTIVE: ISO 9001 recommends a customer survey both pre and post hearing aid fitting. A lot of different German questionnaires are in use, but most of them have not been investigated by a large number of patients. The APHAB is well evaluated in the US. We want to compare our APHAB (German) outcome with the US-norm given by the HARL, to be able to answer the question if the German-APHAB can be used for quality control in hearing aid fitting done in a German ENT-office. Furthermore we want to discuss some special aspects of the benefit of the APHAB in quality control of hearing aid fitting. M

Effects of earmold type on ability to locate sounds when wearing hearing aids.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the choice of earmold type can affect aided auditory localization. HYPOTHESES: 1) for sensorineural hearing losses with good low-frequency hearing (Low group, n = 10), the use of open earmolds could avoid decrements in horizontal plane localization found with closed (occluding) earmolds; 2) for sensorineural losses with good high-frequency hearing (High group, n = 12), the use of open earmolds could result in better vertical plane localization than could the use of closed earmolds; and 3) for conductive/mixed hearing losses (CM group, n = 19), the choice of ear

Occupational Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Africa: Gaps, Barriers, and Strategies for Effective Prevention.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) remains one of the most common and preventable occupational diseases globally, yet it exerts a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries. In Africa, where hazardous noise exposure is widespread and occupational health systems are under-resourced, ONIHL continues to affect workers across both formal and informal sectors. This narrative review, conducted with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-style transparency, synthesizes Africa-specific evidence from 49 sources, including epidemiological studies

Veteran and Provider Perspectives on Rehabilitation for Severe Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss is common and a particularly prevalent disability among Veterans. In response, comprehensive hearing services are available within the Veterans Affairs (VA) integrated healthcare system. Severe hearing loss may pose distinct communication challenges inadequately addressed by hearing aids, but data suggest severe hearing loss is often not treated differently. We sought to identify barriers and facilitators to evidence-based and individualized management of severe hearing loss from the perspectives of VA clinicians and Veterans. METHODS: We used purposeful s

Comparative Evaluation of ChatGPT and Gemini in Approximating Clinically Confirmed Diagnoses From Structured Numerical Pure-Tone Audiogram Data.

INTRODUCTION: The utilization of large language models (LLMs) in healthcare shows promising potential for addressing the global shortage of audiologists. However, their effectiveness in understanding and interpreting complex, live, real-world structured audiological data requires further investigation, as previous studies have primarily focused on theoretical situations and scenarios. This study aimed to assess and compare the diagnostic inference abilities of ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, USA) and Gemini (Google, Mountain View, USA) in differentiating clinically confirmed diagnoses based on
