Bilirubin-albumin binding affinity and serum albumin concentration during intensive phototherapy (blue double light) in jaundiced newborn infants.

Thirty newborn infants with normal birth weights and uncomplicated hyperbilirubinaemia were studied. Twenty three of these were treated continuously for 24 h with intensive phototherapy (blue double light), and seven untreated infants served as controls. During the treatment the serum concentrations of total bilirubin and unbound bilirubin in diluted serum measured by the peroxidase method were markedly reduced. The binding affinity of bilirubin to its high affinity site on serum albumin was not affected. During the treatment a slight decrease of the serum albumin concentration occurred, and t

Investigation of a Blue Light LED Device to Suppress Wound Pathogens Using a Collagen-Based Synthetic Skin Model.

Conventional wound management is increasingly challenged by the rise of antimicrobial resistance and the cytotoxic side effects of traditional agents. Phototherapy, particularly using blue light (BL), offers a promising non-invasive and non-contact alternative. This study evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy and safety of a 405 nm BL-LED device against a broad spectrum of medically important wound pathogens using a collagen-based synthetic skin model, emphasizing the novelty of applying this platform for light-based antimicrobial testing. This synthetic skin provides a more realistic environme

Utilize Metabolomics Molecular Networking to Guide the Discovery of Chemical Entities from Cordyceps militaris Against Blue Light Hazards.

Increasing exposure to blue light has raised concern about retinal injury, particularly in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E), a photosensitive fluorophore associated with age-related macular degeneration, is an important mediator of this process. In this study, feature-based molecular networking guided the identification of cordylutenes A-J (1-10), a new molecular family of blue light-protective fungal pigments from Cordyceps militaris. These metabolites possess a previously unreported symmetric all-E C20 polyene dicarbonyl skeleton with caroten

Blue Light Induces Cultivar-Specific Metabolic Reprogramming of Bioactive Compounds in Chinese Cabbage Revealed by Widely Targeted Metabolomics.

Chinese cabbage is a widely cultivated leafy vegetable with high nutritional value. Contains high levels of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and phytochemical antioxidants, and plays an important role in human nutrition. In this study, the common cultivar 14S23 was used as a control, and two orange-red heart cultivars (15S1094 and 20S530) were exposed to blue light (300 μmol m-2 s-1) for 3 or 6 h to elucidate the effects of blue light on nutritional quality and underlying regulatory mechanisms. Results demonstrated clear cultivar-specific differences in antioxidant capacity and metabolic responses un

Evaluation of 415-nm Blue Light and Hypochlorous Acid on the Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) Cranial Implant Microbiota.

Cranially-implanted macaques are a crucial model for neuroscience research. Implant complications include abscesses, meningoencephalitis, and implant-tissue margin infections. Antimicrobial overuse has increased bacterial resistance, risking macaque health and complicating treatment of infections. This project aimed to assess the antimicrobial effects of blue light (∼415 nm) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) treatment of cranial implant margins. Blue light exerts antibacterial effects via the induction of reactive oxygen species. We hypothesized that exposing cranial implant margins to a commercial

ipRGCs Sensitive Blue Light Exposure Promotes the Robustness of Circadian and Neural Stem Cells in Sleep Deprived Conditions.

Circadian rhythm abnormalities due to sleep deprivation (SD) may promote the development of emotional and cognitive disorders. Though light therapies have been employed to treat circadian disorders, the exact treatments and their underlying biology are still unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) sensitive 480 nm blue light on circadian rhythms affecting emotional and cognitive behaviors and the expression of neural stem cells (NSCs) stemness genes. In this study, we demonstrate that for mice with acute SD for 24 h, e

Melatonin restores hepatic lipid metabolic homeostasis disrupted by blue light at night in high-fat diet-fed mice.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an emerging environmental pollutant that threatens public health. Recently, ALAN has been identified as a risk factor for obesity; however, the role of ALAN and its light wavelength in hepatic lipid metabolic homeostasis remains undetermined. We showed that chronic dim (~5 lx) ALAN (dLAN) exposure significantly promoted hepatic lipid accumulation in obese or diabetic mice, with the most severe effect of blue light and little effect of green or red light. These metabolic phenotypes were attributed to blue rather than green or red dLAN interfering with hepatic

Blue-Light-Activated Water-Soluble Sn(IV)-Porphyrins for Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) against Drug-Resistant Bacterial Pathogens.

Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a global threat to the treatment of infectious diseases. Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising alternative approach and is highly suitable for the treatment of cutaneous bacterial infections through topical applications. aPDT relies on light-responsive compounds called photosensitizer (PS) dyes, which generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) when induced by light, thereby killing bacterial cells. Despite several previous studies in this area, the molecular details of targeting and cell death mediated by PS dyes are poorly understood. In

Blue Light-Induced, Dosed Protein Expression of Active BDNF in Human Cells Using the Optogenetic CRY2/CIB System.

The use of optogenetic tools offers an excellent method for spatially and temporally regulated gene and protein expression in cell therapeutic approaches. This could be useful as a concomitant therapeutic measure, especially in small body compartments such as the inner ear, for example, during cochlea implantation, to enhance neuronal cell survival and function. Here, we used the blue light activatable CRY2/CIB system to induce transcription of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in human cells. Transfection with three plasmids, encoding for the optogenetic system and the target, as well

Blue Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation Without a Photosensitizer Alters Oral Microbiome Composition of Ligature-Induced Periodontitis in Mice.

Objective: This study investigated the suppressive effects of blue light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation on bone resorption and changes in the oral microbiome of mice with ligature-induced periodontitis. Background: Wavelength of blue light has antimicrobial effects; however, whether blue LED irradiation alone inhibits the progression of periodontitis remains unclear. Methods: Nine-week-old male mice ligated ligature around the right maxillary second molar was divided into ligation alone (Li) and ligation with blue LED irradiation (LiBL) groups. The LiBL group underwent blue LED (wavelength,

Blue Light Inhibits Proliferation of Metastatic Cancer Cells by Regulating Translational Initiation: A Synergistic Property with Anticancer Drugs.

The aim of this study was to examine the inhibitory effect of blue light (BL) on the proliferation of metastatic cancer cells and synergistic properties with chemo-drugs. BL significantly inhibited the proliferation of B cell lymphoma (A20 and RAMOS) cells in a dose-dependent manner. Anti-proliferative effect of BL irradiation was identified to be associated with the inhibition of proliferating-cell nuclear antigen expression and cell cycle by decreasing S-phase cells. Consistent with its inhibitory effects, BL irradiation at 20 J/cm2 daily for 10 days inhibited metastasis of cancer cells whic

Wearable Photomedicine for Neonatal Jaundice Treatment Using Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs): Toward Textile-Based Wearable Phototherapeutics.

Neonatal jaundice is a very common disease in newborns and can lead to brain damage or death in severe cases. Phototherapy with light-emitting diode (LED) arrays is widely used as the easiest and fastest way to relieve jaundice in newborns, but it has distinct disadvantages such as loss of water in the patient, damage to the retina, and separation from parents. In this paper, a novel light source-based phototherapy for neonatal jaundice is proposed using a textile-based wearable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) platform that can move flexibly and conform to the curvature of the human body.

Phenylene Bis-Diphenyltriazine (TriAsorB), a new sunfilter protecting the skin against both UVB + UVA and blue light radiations.

Sunlight induces actinic keratosis, skin cancers and photoaging. Photoprotection is thus a major issue in public health to prevent the harmful effects of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiations. Recent data have shown that the visible (VIS) and infrared (IR) radiations can lead to skin damage by oxidative stress, suggesting that a balanced protection across the entire spectrum of sunlight is necessary to prevent cutaneous alterations. In this context, we developed a new generation of sunfilter called Phenylene Bis-Diphenyltriazine or TriAsorB (CAS N°55514-22-2). The aim of the present study was to a

Efficient Exciplex-Based Deep-Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Employing a Bis(4-fluorophenyl)amine-Substituted Heptazine Acceptor.

The realization of a deep-blue-emitting exciplex system is a herculean task in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) on account of a large red-shifted and broadened exciplex emission spectrum in comparison to those of the corresponding single compounds. Herein, 2,5,8-tris(di(4-fluorophenyl)amine)-1,3,4,6,7,9,9b-heptaazaphenalene (HAP-3FDPA) was designed as an electron acceptor by integrating three bis(4-fluorophenyl)amine groups into a heptazine core, while 1,3-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene (mCP) possessing two electron-donating carbazole moieties was chosen as the electron donor. Blue light therapy improves circadian dysfunction as well as motor symptoms in two mouse models of Huntington's disease.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) exhibit movement disorders, psychiatric disturbance and cognitive impairments as the disease progresses. Abnormal sleep/wake cycles are common among HD patients with reports of delayed sleep onset, fatigue during the day, and a delayed pattern of melatonin secretion all of which suggest circadian dysfunction. Mouse models of HD confirm disrupted circadian rhythms with pathophysiology found in the central circadian clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus). Importantly, circadian dysfunction manifests early in disease, even before the classic motor symptoms, in bot

Neonates with sickle cell disease are vulnerable to blue light phototherapy-induced oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokine elevations.

Sickle cell disease is a frequent genetic anomaly characterized by altered molecular structure of hemoglobin resulting into crescent-like deformation of the red blood corpuscles. Neonatal jaundice is a frequent co-morbidity in sickle cell disease. Phototherapy induces isomerization of bilirubin rendering it extractable through urine and hence it is used as a routine treatment of neonatal jaundice. An exposure to light phototherapy as a treatment of neonatal jaundice induces oxidative stress. It is hypothesized that such exposure of neonates with sickle cell disease to the blue light photothera

Blocking blue light during mania - markedly increased regularity of sleep and rapid improvement of symptoms: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Available pharmacological treatment of mania is insufficient. Virtual darkness therapy (blue light-blocking treatment by means of orange-tinted glasses) is a promising new treatment option for mania. The basis for this might be the recently identified blue light-sensitive retinal photoreceptor, which is solely responsible for light stimulus to the circadian master clock. This is the first case report describing the clinical course of a closely monitored, hospitalized patient in a manic episode first receiving clear-lensed, and then blue light-blocking glasses. METHODS: A 58-year-ol
