PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the literature on repeat use of emergency contraception and pericoital approaches to contraception.
RECENT FINDINGS: Women are very interested in an oral, on-demand contraceptive option, were one available. Ulipristal acetate and a combination of levonorgestrel (LNG) and meloxicam (a cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor) both appear to be more effective at disrupting ovulation than LNG alone. Recent advisories from the United Kingdom regarding daily dosing of ulipristal for fibroids emphasize the need for more safety data.
SUMMARY: Repeat pericoital dosing of 1.5-mg LNG

Barriers and spermicides are being developed for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection. The inconvenience of current methods limits their acceptability and leads to higher user failure rates. New methods, such as female condoms, nonlatex male condoms, and new cervical caps are being developed: the Reality (Wisconsin Pharmacal, Jackson, WI) polyurethane vaginal pouch has already received conditional Food and Drug Administration approval for use in the United States. The material used in a Food and Drug Administration-approved nonallergenic glove is being tested

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) play an important role in making emergency contraceptives (ECs) available to clients. They can influence accessibility positively through counselling, prescribing or advocating the use of ECs. However, in some settings, HCWs have been blamed for unfavourable attitudes and lack of accurate information. Objective. To assess the knowledge, attitudes and prescribing pattern of EC by HCWs in Kampala district, Uganda.
METHODS: The total number of health units at different levels of health care delivery in Kampala (894) was obtained. Probability proportional to

BACKGROUND: The potential that ongoing contraception and emergency contraception (EC) offer to reduce unplanned pregnancy and abortion is diminished by many barriers. Even when women seek care, their acute needs for those interventions may not be assessed.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective chart review of charts of women potentially at risk for unplanned pregnancy who were provided care in an OB-GYN urgent care clinic in a tertiary care, training hospital. Information was collected about the patient's age group, her presenting complaint, the specialty of the resident who saw her and wheth

OBJECTIVE: To summarize evidence regarding current demand for on-demand oral contraception.
STUDY DESIGN: We used Medline and collegial contacts to find published and unpublished studies conducted or reported in the past 15 years with information assessing women's interest in using any oral drug preparation, including emergency contraceptive pills, in a coitus-dependent manner either repeatedly or as a primary or planned pregnancy prevention method.
RESULTS: We found 19 studies with relevant information. The studies were conducted in 16 countries. Eight studies provided data on women's attit

Nowadays, unwanted pregnancy is a major globe tragedy for millions of women, associated with significant direct and indirect costs, no matter for individuals or society. The progesterone receptor antagonist steroid, mifepristone has been widely and effectively using throughout the world for medical abortion, but to a lesser extent for emergency contraception. In this review, we hope to explore the role of mifepristone as a contraceptive, particularly for emergency contraception. Studies of mifepristone have also been expanding to the fields of endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Furthermore, t

INTRODUCTION: We describe the use of emergency contraception (EC) and its association with sociodemographic, contraceptive and behavioural characteristics in a sample of family practice attendants in Belgium.
METHODS: The study was part of a large Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) prevalence study in general practice. Sexually active women under 40 who consulted their general practitioner for routine gynaecological care were enrolled in the study. Participants completed a questionnaire on sociodemographic variables, urogenital symptoms, sexual history and sexual behaviour, and delivered a sample for

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine whether emergency contraceptive use predicts future sex at risk for pregnancy, pregnancy, or sexually transmitted infection among young women.
STUDY DESIGN: A secondary analysis of control group participants (n = 718) from a recent trial of advanced provision of emergency contraception was conducted.
RESULTS: We found no association between use of emergency contraception and either pregnancy or infection. Recent use predicted decreased occurrence of subsequent sex at risk for pregnancy among women with a history of sexually transmitted inf

BACKGROUND: Contraception is a major component of reproductive health. Assessing the levels of contraceptive awareness and use helps to identify potential areas of intervention. Hence, this study was conducted to assess awareness, practice and associated factors of modern contraceptives among street women in North-West Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 204 street women from Gondar and Bahir Dar cities. Participants were recruited from "cluster" sites such as main road sides, isolated slum areas, around Churches and/or Mosques (in the mornings of Sundays and other rel

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy occurs due to incorrect or inconsistent use of a contraception method. Such pregnancies can create an economic burden on the family, society and nation as a whole. Unintended pregnancy is the underlying cause of abortion which can also result in infertility and maternal death. Adequate knowledge of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) and positive attitudes among the community pharmacy practitioners (CPPs) is a prerequisite for timely access of ECP, thus ultimately lessening the incidence of unintended pregnancies. This study intended to explore the knowledge,

Emergency contraception is used after unprotected sex, inadequately protected sex, or sexual assault to reduce the risk of pregnancy. Of emergency contraceptive methods available in the United States, the copper intrauterine device has the highest efficacy, followed by ulipristal acetate, levonorgestrel-containing emergency contraceptive pills, and the Yuzpe method. However, access to the most effective methods is limited. Although advanced prescription of emergency contraceptive pills and counseling on emergency contraception to all reproductive-aged women is recommended, women should be advi

Every month, DTB scans sources of information on treatments, disease management and other healthcare topics for key items to bring to our readers' attention and help them keep up to date. To do this, we produce succinct, contextualised summaries of the information concerned. We also include comments on, for example, the strengths of the information, whether it contains anomalies, ambiguities, apparent error or omissions, or whether or how it affects current practice.
