A total of 51 sponges (Porifera) and 13 ascidians (Chordata) were collected on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) and extracted with organic solvents. The resulting extracts were screened for antibacterial activity against four multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens: the Gram-negative Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the organic extracts of each marine organism were determined using a broth microdilution assay. Extracts of eight of the species,

The deep sea remains a last paradise and the place of minimal human impacts compared with other ecosystems. However, this pristine status is rapidly changing, and deep-sea human impacts have seldom been discussed in a broad context that draws comparisons with those in other ecosystems. Here, we recap the history of human-induced ecological degradation in deep-sea, shallow-marine and terrestrial ecosystems to place the deep-sea situation in a broad context. Anthropogenic terrestrial ecosystem degradation started tens of thousands of years ago. Shallow-marine ecosystem change followed that of te

Damselfish neurofibromatosis (DNF) is a naturally occurring, neoplastic disease affecting bicolor damselfish (Pomacentrus partitus) living on coral reefs in southern Florida, USA. The disease consists of multiple neurofibromas, neurofibrosarcomas and chromatophoromas and has been proposed as an animal model for neurofibromatosis type 1 in humans. DNF is transmissible by injection of crude tumour homogenates, cell-free filtrates of homogenates or cells from tumour cell lines. An analysis of tumorigenic cell lines derived from fish with spontaneous or experimentally induced DNF revealed virus pa

Coral aggregate seawater concrete (CASC) capitalizes on locally sourced aggregates in marine and reef engineering, enabling in situ material utilization and conferring marked benefits in curbing conventional resource consumption and construction expenditures-a combination that underpins its considerable promise for reef infrastructure development. To date, research efforts have largely been confined to macroscopic mechanical characterization and qualitative microstructural inspections, and quantitative assessments of mesoscopic damage evolution across the full loading-to-failure process remain

Giant clams (Tridacna spp.) are keystone reef organisms that play important ecological roles in Indo-Pacific coral reef ecosystems. However, their populations have declined substantially because of overexploitation, habitat degradation, and climate change. Cryopreservation offers a potential strategy for preserving genetic resources and supporting future conservation and restoration efforts. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of cryopreserving D-stage larvae of Tridacna crocea and T. maxima using a two-step freezing protocol. The effects of different cryoprotectants, concentrations, a

The Yucatan Peninsula, southeast México, hosts a unique underwater karstic system of galleries connected by multiple sinkholes, locally called cenotes. This system is developed on a great Late Miocene to Early Pliocene carbonate platform belonging to the Carrillo Puerto Formation. The karstification process partially erodes these deposits' surfaces and exposes the fossil assemblage. Here, we present the fossil fish diversity in underwater prospections in the Cenotes Sambulá, San Juan, and X-Nabuy. Our results indicate the presence of at least 11 different taxa, which include: 1) species that l

Aplysina cauliformis, the Caribbean purple rope sponge, is commonly affected by Aplysina Red Band Syndrome (ARBS). This transmissible disease manifests as circular lesions with red margins and results in bare spongin fibers. Leptolyngbya spp. appear to be responsible for the characteristic red coloration but transmission studies with a sponge-derived isolate failed to establish disease, leaving the etiology of ARBS unknown. To investigate the cause of ARBS, contact transmission experiments were performed between healthy and diseased sponges separated by filters with varying pore sizes. Transmi

Convergent evolution of small body size occurs across many vertebrate clades and may reflect an evolutionary response to shared selective pressures. However it remains unclear if other aspects of phenotype undergo convergent evolution in miniaturized lineages. Here we present a comparative analysis of body size and shape evolution in marine angelfishes (Pomacanthidae), a reef fish family characterized by repeated transitions to small body size. We ask if lineages that evolve small sizes show convergent evolution in body shape. Our results reveal that angelfish lineages evolved three different

Due to similarities in morphology and overlapping distribution, Octopus americanus and O. insularis (both formerly designated as O. vulgaris) are now considered to be cryptic species inhabiting the western Atlantic, while O. vulgaris inhabits the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. The historical lack of distinction made between O. americanus and O. insularis in the scientific literature and fisheries statistics, and persisting confusion regarding the identity and basic biological traits of each species, has hindered proper management of octopus fisheries in the western Atlantic. We attempt to

Sea turtles are a charismatic and ancient ocean species and can serve as key indicators for ocean ecosystems, including coral reefs and sea grass beds as well as coastal beaches. Genotoxicity studies in the species are absent, limiting our understanding of the impact of environmental toxicants on sea turtles. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a ubiquitous environmental problem worldwide, and recent studies show it is a global marine pollutant of concern. Thus, we evaluated the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of soluble and particulate Cr(VI) in hawksbill sea turtle cells. Particulate Cr(VI) was bo

Marine isolates such as palytoxin (PTX) are of concern within the Caribbean region due to their toxicity. PTX for example has been described as a one of the most known potent marine toxins, known to prevent predation from larger species (e.g. vertebrates) as well as the prevention of being overgrown from other coral species. PTX is a polyhydroxylated polyether toxin with a very large and complex chemical structure that possesses both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. Previous acute toxicity tests using brine shrimp (Artemia salina) and PTX extract had shown it to be moderately toxic. In h

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is the most prevalent non-bacterial food-borne form of poisoning in French Polynesia, which results from the consumption of coral reef fish naturally contaminated with ciguatoxins produced by dinoflagellates in the genus Gambierdiscus. Since the early 2000s, this French territory has also witnessed the emergence of atypical forms of ciguatera, known as ciguatera shellfish poisoning (CSP), associated with the consumption of marine invertebrates. In June 2014, nine tourists simultaneously developed a major and persistent poisoning syndrome following the consumption

Experimental evolution under elevated temperatures has generated heat-evolved (HE) strains of Symbiodiniaceae that enhance coral bleaching tolerance. However, the biomolecular mechanisms underlying this resilience remain poorly understood. We conducted a laboratory heat-stress experiment and applied synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy to examine physiological and biomolecular responses of HE (strain: SS8) and wild-type (strain: WT10) Cladocopium proliferum to thermal stress across three physiological contexts: in hospite, expelled, and cultured. Skin pigmentation in teleosts is a complex process governed by molecular and cellular mechanisms during development. In this study, we investigated the pigmentation process in the tomato clownfish (Amphiprion frenatus) using an integrated approach combining histological analysis and transcriptomics (RNA-Seq and Ribo-Seq). Histological examination revealed the stepwise differentiation of chromatophores during post-embryonic development. Transcriptomic profiling at 14 days post-hatching (dph) identified extensive changes in transcript abundance, with 2063 of 2667 differentially expressed unigene

The reef-building coral Acropora is a broadcast spawning hermaphrodite including more than 110 species in the Indo-Pacific. In addition, many sympatric species show synchronous spawning. The released gametes need to mate with conspecifics in the mixture of the gametes of many species for their species boundaries. However, the mechanism underlying the species recognition of conspecifics at fertilization remains unknown. We hypothesized that rapid molecular evolution (positive selection) in genes encoding gamete-composing proteins generates polymorphic regions that recognize conspecifics in the

Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) outbreaks seriously threaten coral reef ecosystems, while conventional monitoring approaches are time-consuming and often lack sufficient sensitivity for early warning. Existing electrochemical DNA sensors usually require complex electrode-surface immobilization procedures, which can lead to uneven probe distribution, significant steric hindrance, and poor stability. Meanwhile, the low concentration of environmental DNA (eDNA) in marine environments further complicates detection. To overcome these challenges, this study developed a homogeneous electrochemical DN

Amplicon sequencing is an effective and increasingly applied method for studying viral communities in the environment. Here, we present vAMPirus, a user-friendly, comprehensive, and versatile DNA and RNA virus amplicon sequence analysis program, designed to support investigators in exploring virus amplicon sequencing data and running informed, reproducible analyses. vAMPirus intakes raw virus amplicon libraries and, by default, performs nucleotide- and amino acid-based analyses to produce results such as sequence abundance information, taxonomic classifications, phylogenies and community diver
