As caries prevalence in some countries declines, and panel sizes for discriminating anti-caries clinical trials inevitably increase, the need for participant pre-selection grows to avoid escalating cost and manpower problems. Hence, retrospective analyses of data were undertaken, from a 3-yr double-blind caries clinical trial where a linear fluoride dose-response had been obtained. As a result, it was demonstrated that the eruption status of permanent second molars, in 3005 participants aged 11-12 yr at outset, when coupled with their baseline clinical DMFT values, provided a sound basis for p

OBJECTIVES: Propolis possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. While its application in oral care has garnered significant attention, evidence supporting its effectiveness against periodontal bacteria is limited. This study used a randomized double-blind protocol to assess the safety and efficacy of toothpaste containing propolis compared to a placebo in patients undergoing supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two participants in SPT were randomized into two groups: toothpaste containing 2.5% ethanol-extracted propolis (EEP) and a pl

Dental caries is caused by the buildup of acidic end products that result from the metabolism of dental plaque microbes. Natural products that are widely available could be used as an alternative or adjunctive anti-caries therapy. Sometimes, when two products are used together, they yield a more powerful antimicrobial effect than the anticipated additive effect. These synergistic combinations are often better treatment options because individual agents may not have sufficient antimicrobial action to be effective when used alone. Cranberries contain phenolic compounds like proanthocyanidins (PA

The objective of this 6-month, double-blind, clinical study, conducted following the American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines, was to provide an assessment of the effectiveness of a newly developed mouthrinse containing 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) for the control of supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis. Adult men and women from the Manchester, England, area were entered in the study, and stratified into two treatment groups (CPC mouthrinse and control mouthrinse), which were balanced for baseline Quigley-Hein Plaque Index scores and baseline Löe-Silness Gingival Index scores

BACKGROUND: Chewable toothpaste tablets (CTTs) have recently emerged as environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional toothpaste formulations. However, limited scientific evidence is available regarding their clinical efficacy in plaque control. The present study aimed to compare the antiplaque efficacy and user acceptability of two commercially available chewable toothpaste tablets among young adults.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized double-blind crossover clinical trial was conducted among 196 adults aged 18-35 years. Participants were randomly allocated into two intervention

The Gingival Contour Plaque Index (GCPI) is a recently introduced and validated method of measuring plaque accumulation in dogs. It focuses on plaque accumulated along the gingival margin. Plaque accumulation in this area leads to gingival inflammation and, potentially, periodontitis. A 6-month plaque and gingivitis study was conducted to demonstrate the clinical research application of the GCPI, and to ensure that documented quantification of plaque-reducing efficacy could be related to a reduction in gingivitis. Advantages of the GCPI method are the ability to quantify plaque accumulation in

INTRODUCTION: Dental fluorosis is an enamel defect resulting from excessive fluoride exposure during amelogenesis. Its development arises from a multifactorial interaction between environmental, behavioral, and biological factors. In rural communities, lack of supervision during children's toothbrushing and inappropriate use of fluoride toothpaste may increase the risk, even when water fluoride levels are low.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between environmental and behavioral factors with the presence and severity of dental fluorosis in children aged 6 to 12 years from the district

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have focused on the timing of fluoride intake relative to the development of dental fluorosis. This study reports the relationships of fluoride intake during the first 48 months of life with fluorosis on early-erupting permanent teeth.
METHODS: Subjects were followed from birth to 48 months with questionnaires every 3-4 months. Questionnaires gathered data on intakes from water, diet, supplements, and dentifrice to estimate total fluoride intake. Early-erupting permanent teeth of 579 subjects were assessed for fluorosis using the Fluorosis Risk Index (FRI) at appro

Modern dentistry emphasizes the importance of dental plaque control to improve oral health. The use of oral care formulations with antiplaque biocides plays a crucial role in patient-directed approaches for plaque control. The antiplaque efficacies of these formulations have been extensively studied in many long-term clinical studies designed in accordance with well-accepted guidelines. The results from these studies conclusively demonstrate that long-term use of oral care formulations with well-known antiplaque biocides such as chlorhexidine and triclosan reduce supragingival plaque and gingi

Previous studies of intra-oral distribution of dental fluorosis in low-fluoride areas reported that teeth that formed later in life were more frequently affected compared with the early-forming teeth. The steady increase of plasma fluoride with age, even under constant fluoride exposure, has been suggested as a possible mechanism for this clinical manifestation. To determine the intra-oral distribution of Dean's Index scores and the effect of fluoride exposure on early- and late-forming teeth, we analyzed data collected on 2193 seven- to 14-year-old lifelong residents of fluoridated or non-flu

Epidemiological data on dentine hypersensitivity (DH) prevalence are limited. Few studies have compared prevalence between populations. The aim of this investigation, therefore, was to compare the perception and prevalence of DH in two distinct non-periodontal practice populations, one U.K. and one Korean. Completed questionnaires from 557 patients (230 males and 327 females, comprising 115 males and 162 females, mean age 41.7 years (s.d.=14.36), U.K. and 115 males and 165 females, mean age 29.7 years (s.d.=11.86), Korean) were collected. Analysis was by frequency distribution and cross-tabula

The treatment of drug-induced gingival overgrowth is compounded by the high recurrence rate resulting from chronic use of the medication and the persistence of other risk factors. In this case series, the treatment outcome of a nonsurgical periodontal therapy, according to the concept of full-mouth disinfection in 11 patients with drug-induced gingival overgrowth, is described. All clinical parameters improved significantly after therapy. Only 6% of teeth received further surgical treatment. The clinical situation remained stable during the recall. The present case series suggests that full-mo

In three experiments, chloroform was administered to mice by gavage in a toothpaste base or in arachis oil, in doses up to 60 mg/kg/d on 6 days/wk for 8 wks. Control groups were left untreated or given vehicle only. In general, there were more survivors in chloroform-treated groups than in the controls. In the case of the males of three strains (C57BL, CBA and CF/1), treatment was associated with no adverse affect on the incidence of any type of neoplasm or any other parameter. In the males but not the females of a fourth strain (ICI) and in doses of 60 mg/kg/d but not of 17 mg/kg/d, exposure

Oral healthcare products are well tolerated and while adverse occurrences are rare there is still a need to explore the interaction between these products and the oral mucosa. This study assessed the effects of oral healthcare ingredients: sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), a detergent; cinnamic aldehyde (CA), a flavouring agent; and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), an antiseptic, using a reconstructed human oral mucosal model (OMM). Differential release of inflammatory cytokines IL-1α, IL-8 and cytotoxicity was compared with other known irritants and sensitizers to identify a signature response pro
