The present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated electrocortical changes related to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in spider phobic females. Forty-five patients and twenty non-phobic women were presented with phobia-relevant, generally fear-inducing, disgust-inducing and affectively neutral pictures in a first EEG session. Phobic patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy (TG) or a waiting-list (WG) group. EEG measurement was repeated after CBT or a waiting period. ERPs were extracted in the time windows 340-500ms (P300), 550-770ms (late positive potential (LPP), early L

A group of highly traumatized refugees n = 26 with diverse cultural backgrounds in a Danish Clinic for Traumatized Refugees (CTR) was assessed for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and other aspects of general functioning. Patients were assessed at intake, after the end of treatment and six months later. The results point to very high symptom levels and a large need for treatment in this population. Psychiatric symptoms and their correlates were assessed with the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ), the Trauma Symptom Checklist-23 (TSC-23), the Global Assessment of Function (GAF), and

BACKGROUND: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD. However, it is unclear whether EMDR shows the same effectiveness in patients with substance use disorders (SUD) and comorbid PTSD. In this trial, we examine the effectiveness of EMDR in reducing PTSD symptoms in patients with SUD and PTSD.
METHODS/DESIGN: We conduct a single-blinded RCT among 158 patients with SUD and comorbid PTSD admitted to a German addiction rehabilitation center specialized for the treatment of patients with SUD and comorbid PTSD. Patients are randomized to receive e

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrated an attenuation of the affect-modulated startle reflex when alcohol-dependent patients were viewing alcohol-associated pictures. This indicates an appetitive valence of these stimuli. We used the affect-modulated startle reflex to assess the effects of behavioral treatment on the emotional processing of alcohol-associated stimuli. Further, we examined whether the affect-modulated startle reflex is a predictor of treatment success.
METHODS: Forty-three alcohol-dependent patients (21 females, mean age 45.67 years, SD 9.45) were recruited consecutively fr

The goal of this study was to determine if virtual reality graded exposure therapy (VRGET) was equally efficacious, more efficacious, or less efficacious, than imaginal exposure therapy in the treatment of fear of flying. Thirty participants (Age = 39.8 +/- 9.7) with confirmed DSM-IV diagnosis of specific phobia fear of flying were randomly assigned to one of three groups: VRGET with no physiological feedback (VRGETno), VRGET with physiological feedback (VRGETpm), or systematic desensitization with imaginal exposure therapy (IET). Eight sessions were conducted once a week. During each session,

BACKGROUND: There are abundant data to justify the use of behavioral methods in treating patients with anxiety disorders. Yet there also is evidence that these methods have been underutilized in treating these patients. In this study we examined a large sample of patients with anxiety disorders to determine the extent to which behavior therapy methods were used in their treatment.
METHOD: As part of a multicenter longitudinal study of patients with anxiety disorders in New England, we analyzed data pertinent to the type of treatment received by 231 patients at nine study sites. Study subjects

UNLABELLED: For patients with acute post-traumatic neck pain (PTNP), pain-related fear has been identified as a potential predictor of chronic disability. If such is the case, fear reduction should enhance the prevention of further pain disability and distress after traumatic neck pain disability. However, exposure-based treatments have not been tested in patients with PTNP. Using a replicated single-case crossover phase design with multiple measurements, this study examined whether the validity of a graded exposure in vivo, as compared with usual graded activity, extends to PTNP. Eight patien

This naturalistic study aimed at evaluating the implementation of an additional symptom-oriented intervention program for patients with panic disorder and/or agoraphobia in a psychodynamic inpatient setting. Patients receiving this intervention showed a significantly better therapy outcome as measured by the symptom-specific scales of the SCL-90-R compared to anxiety patients who had not undergone this additional treatment. This specific improvement was stronger than the general improvement found in therapy outcome over time. Our findings show that the combination of different treatment strate

Conversion therapy is a set of practices that aim to change or alter an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity. It is premised on a belief that an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity can be changed and that doing so is a desirable outcome for the individual, family, or community. Other terms used to describe this practice include sexual orientation change effort (SOCE), reparative therapy, reintegrative therapy, reorientation therapy, ex-gay therapy, and gay cure. Conversion therapy is practiced in every region of the world. We have identified sources confirming or i

Although cognitive-behavioural treatments of patients with chronic pain generally are reported to be effective, customization might increase their effectiveness. One possible way to customize treatment is to focus the intervention on the supposed mechanism underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain disability. Evidence is accumulating in support of the conjecture that pain-related fear and associated avoidance behaviours are crucial in the development and maintenance of chronic pain disability. It seems timely to apply this knowledge to the cognitive-behavioural management of chronic

OBJECTIVES: In the present study we examined the facial affective behaviour of acute adult-onset traumatized patients versus childhood-onset traumatized patients. Furthermore, we analyzed whether a decrease in emotional numbing results from a reduction of symptoms. We used amnestic tendencies as a moderator variable.
METHODS: The facial affective behaviour was coded with the Emotional Facial Acting Coding System, an instrument for the registration of facial movements with emotional relevance. The facial affective behaviour of the patient's first and last EMDR sessions was compared.
RESULTS:

INTRODUCTION: Despite decades of psychotherapy research yielding over 100 empirically supported treatment protocols, clinical practice continues to face persistent challenges, including high dropout rates averaging 15-20% in controlled settings and widespread treatment resistance. The central tension is the "research-practice gap": whereas research validates singular, manualized protocols, clinicians predominantly operate eclectically. Critically, the field lacks a standardized framework to guide how clinicians should select and sequence interventions-not merely which protocols exist. Emerging

Background Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)-centered psychotherapy is an evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet symptom trajectories during routine outpatient care vary considerably. Process factors such as therapeutic alliance and treatment intensity may influence outcomes, but their independent and combined contributions in real-world clinical settings remain unclear. This study examined the relationships among therapeutic alliance, treatment intensity, and PTSD symptom change in a naturalistic outpatient context. Methods This single-cente

IMPORTANCE: Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) affect nearly 50% of children experiencing physical trauma. PTSS often persists after physical recovery and is associated with reduced health-related quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy of the online therapist-assisted, trauma-focused Reducing Stress After Trauma (ReSeT) program in reducing PTSS in children after hospitalization for physical injury.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A 2-arm randomized clinical trial with 1:1 assignment to the ReSeT program or usual care (UC) was conducted between 2021 and 2024 at 4 sites with lev

BACKGROUND: People living in humanitarian settings in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are exposed to a constellation of stressors that make them vulnerable to developing mental disorders. Mental disorders with a higher prevalence in these settings include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive, anxiety, somatoform (e.g. medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS)), and related disorders. A range of psychological therapies are used to manage symptoms of mental disorders in this population.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness and acceptability of psychologic

OBJECTIVE: Frontline mental health, emergency, law enforcement, and social workers have faced unprecedented psychological distress in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the RCT (Randomized Controls Trial) study was to investigate the effectiveness of a Group EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy (Group Traumatic Episode Protocol-GTEP) in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Moral Injury. The treatment focus is an early intervention, group trauma treatment, delivered remotely as video-conference psychotherapy (VCP). This early interv

BACKGROUND: The treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to a history of sexual and/or physical abuse in childhood is the subject of international debate, with some favouring a phase-based approach as their preferred treatment, while others argue for immediate trauma-focused treatment. A history of (chronic) traumatisation during childhood has been linked to the development of distinct symptoms that are often labelled as symptoms of complex PTSD. Many therapists associate the presence of symptoms of complex PTSD with a less favourable treatment prognosis. The purpose of this s

Research on violent television and films, video games, and music reveals unequivocal evidence that media violence increases the likelihood of aggressive and violent behavior in both immediate and long-term contexts. The effects appear larger for milder than for more severe forms of aggression, but the effects on severe forms of violence are also substantial (r = .13 to .32) when compared with effects of other violence risk factors or medical effects deemed important by the medical community (e.g., effect of aspirin on heart attacks). The research base is large; diverse in methods, samples, and
