This clinical case reports the treatment of an Angle Class II malocclusion in a young woman with a balanced face affected by agenesis of second and third mandibular molars and subsequent extrusion of second maxillary molars. The atypical and peculiar occlusal anomaly led to individualized treatment proposed in order to normalize dental malpositions, with subsequent rehabilitation of edentulous areas by means of a multidisciplinary approach. This case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for obtaining t

AIM: The aim of this report is to present five-year follow-ups of two different applications for the use of direct laminate resin-based composite veneers to improve esthetics.
BACKGROUND: Defects in the maxillary anterior teeth, such as enamel hypoplasia and peg lateral, can present esthetic challenges. Furthermore, a treatment plan that can be completed in a single appointment is highly desirable. This case report presents two different clinical cases involving the use of direct laminate resin-based composite veneers with five-year follow-ups.

In contemporary dental care, an increasing number of adult patients with periodontal disease are seeking orthodontic treatment. Achieving optimal results in such adult patients is difficult because decreased posterior tooth anchorage is risky. This case report demonstrates the use of miniscrew implant anchorage (MIA) in a Chinese male 21 years 5 months of age with maxillary and mandibular anterior dental spacing, bimaxillary protrusion, and severe bone loss caused by periodontal disease. Prior to orthodontic treatment, the patient underwent treatment to control his periodontitis. The patient w

CONTEXT: It is well established that clinical features of acromegaly concern the teeth and the jaw, but less is known about the degree of oral and maxillofacial pathologies.
PATIENTS: 28 acromegalics (13 females, 15 males) with a mean age 49±11 (mean±SD) years (range 31-70) were included in the study. 32% had active disease, 68% were well-controlled under the somatostatin analogue octreotide, the dopamine agonist cabergoline, and the GH receptor antagonist pegvisomant, or were cured after pituitary surgery and/or radiation.
METHODS: All subjects undergone intensive and complex examinations o

Ectopically erupting maxillary canines can cause problems that necessitate surgical, orthodontic, and restorative treatment. When a canine eruption disturbance causes resorption and requires subsequent extraction of the affected teeth, the resulting spaces are candidates for orthodontic repositioning and recontouring of the remaining teeth. To achieve successful results, the clinician must have a proper knowledge of tooth anatomy, root angulation, gingival margin position, restorative techniques, and occlusion. A collaborative effort from the pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and surgeon is req

A 23-year-old woman with a skeletal Class III relationship, a normal vertical jaw relationship, and missing maxillary lateral incisors was treated with bidimensional fixed edgewise appliance therapy combined with orthognathic surgery. A functional and esthetic occlusion in an improved facial profile was established at the end of the surgical and orthodontic treatment. Pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term follow-up records for the patient are presented.

We report the orthodontic treatment of a woman who was congenitally missing teeth 15, 47, and 48. A titanium miniplate was used as anchorage to close the space of the missing premolar by mesial movement of the maxillary posterior teeth into the space of tooth 15. Teeth 16 and 17 were moved 7.4mm mesially, until the proximal contact of tooth 16 with tooth 14 was detected clinically. Good esthetic and dental results were achieved after 34 months of active treatment. Miniplates can be used as orthodontic anchorage to move maxillary molars forward.

There are 2 major drawbacks to the classic orthodontic-surgical approach for resolution of impacted teeth in adults: appearance and duration of treatment. This case report illustrates the lingual orthodontic treatment of an adult with an impacted maxillary canine; absolute anchorage was achieved with a miniscrew placed in the palate. The combination of invisible appliances and a nondental anchorage system is particularly useful in adults and should make treatment available to more patients.

This study assessed condyle position change with premolar extraction and nonextraction orthodontic treatment in Class I malocclusions. Axially corrected pretreatment and posttreatment tomograms were obtained in 22 extraction and 13 nonextraction cases. Tomographic images were randomized and blinded for joint space measurement. A total of 27 linear anterior, superior, and posterior joint spaces were obtained from each tomogram and averaged. Comparisons of pretreatment and posttreatment joint spaces between groups were done by t test (pool variance estimate) with p < 0.05. Left and right anterio

Interest in using magnets for generating orthodontic forces started with the widespread availability of rare earth magnetic alloys. In vivo studies have indicated that a static magnetic field and/or corrosion products from the magnetic materials may induce biological effects when in close contact with cells or tissues. In the clinical situation, orthodontic magnets are often situated some distance away from the gingiva and bone. Consequently, the previously observed biological effects may not be found in an experimental situation mimicking the clinical setting. Thus, the present experimental s

Extraction sites may be needed to achieve specific orthodontic goals of positioning the dentition within the craniofacial complex. The fundamental reality that determines the final position of the dentition, however, is the control exercised by the clinician in closure of the extraction sites. A specific treatment objective may require the posterior teeth to remain in a constant position anteroposteriorly as well as vertically, while the anterior teeth occupy the entire extraction site. Another treatment objective may require the reverse, or any number of purposeful alternatives of extraction

The success of all-ceramic crowns and increased patient demand for metal-free, tooth-colored restorations has led to the development of many different restorative systems for all-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). The most recent core materials for all-ceramic FDPs are the yttrium-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP)-based materials. Yttrium oxide is a stabilizing oxide added to pure zirconia to stabilize it at room temperature and to generate a multiphase material known as partially stabilized zirconia. This exhibits very high flexural strength and fracture toughness along with good b

Patients who are congenitally missing one tooth or more are frequently encountered in routine practice. The etiology, classification, and clinical features of hypodontia are reviewed, and treatment modalities are discussed. One case of mild-to-moderate hypodontia and one case of severe hypodontia are described. Osseointegrated implants have provided encouraging results, especially in patients who are missing anterior teeth or who have severe hypodontia.

In this article, we report the orthodontic treatment of a boy (age 12 years 9 months) who had a midface deficiency, a concave facial profile with maxillary retrusion, a complete crossbite (anterior and posterior), and the maxillary right canine retained in the alveolus. Rapid maxillary expansion was performed followed by complete orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances combined with Class III elastics and anterior vertical elastics. Time was allowed to elapse until growth was virtually over before removing the fixed appliances (at age 18 years 4 months), and no retainer of any type was use
