Class I homeodomain-leucine zipper (C1HDZ) transcription factors regulate diverse developmental and stress-related processes in land plants. While extensively studied in angiosperms, their functions in other lineages are poorly understood. In the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, the sole C1HDZ orthologue (MpC1HDZ) controls herbivore defense by regulating oil body cell formation. This suggests that the function of C1HDZ genes may have diverged during the evolution of land plants. Here, we further investigated the function of MpC1HDZ in M. polymorpha and its integration into Arabidopsis (Arabido

Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Botryosphaeriaceae) is a cosmopolitan ascomycete that endophytically colonizes over 500 plant species and switches to necrotrophy under host stress. In mango (Mangifera indica), it causes stem-end rot, dieback, gummosis, and collar rot, driving substantial pre- and postharvest losses worldwide. This review integrates five thematic areas: (i) multilocus phylogenetics (ITS, tef1-α, tub2, and rpb2) resolving cryptic species within the L. theobromae species complex; (ii) disease epidemiology centered on latent colonization of inflorescences and stress-triggered activation

BACKGROUND: Long-term metabolic disease type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is distinguished by elevated blood glucose, insulin resistance, and drought of insulin with dyslipidemia. Oral hypoglycemic agents lower blood glucose levels as well as prevent both short-term and long-term complications such as micro/macrovascular atherosclerosis, chronic kidney diseases, and chronic heart disease. This study aims to compare the effect of glimepiride versus teneligliptin in combination with metformin in T2DM patients attending a tertiary care hospital.

Plants adapt to abiotic and biotic stresses by activating abscisic acid-mediated (ABA) abiotic stress-responsive and salicylic acid-(SA) or jasmonic acid-mediated (JA) biotic stress-responsive pathways, respectively. Although the abiotic stress-responsive pathway interacts antagonistically with the biotic stress-responsive pathways, the mechanisms that regulate these pathways remain largely unknown. In this study, we provide insight into the function of vascular plant one-zinc-finger proteins (VOZs) that modulate various stress responses in Arabidopsis. The expression of many stress-responsive

Climate change (CC) is a complex phenomenon that has the potential to significantly alter marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Global warming of 2°C is expected to be exceeded during the 21st century, and the frequency of extreme weather events, including floods, storms, droughts, extreme temperatures, and wildfires, has intensified globally over recent decades, differently affecting areas of the world. How CC may impact multiple food safety hazards is increasingly evident, with mycotoxin contamination in particular gaining in prominence. Research focusing on CC effects on

Myo-inositol is a vital compound in plants. As the key rate-limiting enzyme in myo-inositol biosynthesis, l-myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase (MIPS) is regarded as a determinant of the myo-inositol content in plants. The up-regulation of MIPS genes can increase the myo-inositol content, thereby enhancing the plant's resistance to a variety of stresses. However, there are few reports on the roles of myo-inositol and the identification of MIPS in woody trees. In this study, a MIPS gene, named as PeMIPS1, was characterized from Populus euphratica Oliv. The heterologous expression of PeMIPS1 compe

The hunting billbug, Sphenophorus venatus vestitus Chittenden, is a pest that damages stems, rhizomes, and roots of zoysiagrass through a combination of adult and larval feeding. Management of this pest is difficult because it has multiple, overlapping generations in the southern United States, and symptoms of infestations are often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated as drought stress or disease. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse where 18 zoysiagrass cultivars were potted and infested with S. v. vestitus adults to examine the response of zoysiagrass genotypes to S. v. vestitus f

BACKGROUND: Hevein-like peptides are a family of cysteine-rich and chitin-binding peptides consisting of 29-45 amino acids. Their chitin-binding property is essential for plant defense against fungi. Based on the number of cysteine residues in their sequences, they are divided into three sub-families: 6C-, 8C- and 10C-hevein-like peptides. All three subfamilies contain a three-domain precursor comprising a signal peptide, a mature hevein-like peptide and a C-terminal domain comprising a hinge region with protein cargo in 8C- and 10C-hevein-like peptides.
RESULTS: Here we report the isolation

Sugar beet is used not only in the sugar production, but also in a wide range of industries including the production of bioethanol as a source of renewable energy, extraction of pectin and production of molasses. The red beetroot has attracted much attention as health-promoting and disease-preventing functional food. The negative effects of environmental stresses, including abiotic and biotic ones, significantly decrease the cash crop sugar beet productivity. In this paper, we outline the mechanisms of sugar beet response to biotic and abiotic stresses at the levels of physiological change, th

Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time that pose unprecedented stress to the environment and threats to human health. The global impacts of climate change are vast, spanning from extreme weather events to changes in patterns and distribution of infectious diseases. Lack of rainfall associated with higher temperatures has a direct influence on agricultural production. This is compounded by a growing population forecasted to expand further with increasing needs for food and water. All this has led to the increasing use of wastewater worldwide. In this review, we more specifica

UNLABELLED: The key to successful cryopreservation lies in the induction of tolerance towards dehydration/desiccation and freezing. The accumulation of osmo-active compounds, which can be induced by drought and cold stress, is therefore important. In the present study, three-week old shoots from in vitro plantlets of the cultivated potato Solanum tuberosum and its frost-resistant relative Solanum commersonii were submitted to osmotic stress (by using sucrose) and chilling (6°C). After 14days of exposure, shoot tips were sampled in order to gain an insight into changes of the proteome and solub

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown to participate in various stress responses in plants, including drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, osmotic stress, and heavy metal stress. Manganese (Mn), as a necessary nutrient for plant growth, plays an important role in photosynthesis, growth, development, and enzymatic activation of plants. However, excessive Mn2+ in the soil can critically affect plant growth, particularly in acidic soil. In this study, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana was used to explore the mechanism of H2S participation and alleviation of Mn stress. First, using wild-typ
