Blood withdrawal acutely impairs cardiac filling, output and aerobic capacity in proportion to induced hypovolemia in middle-aged and older women.

Blood donation entails acute reductions of cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy men. Whether these effects can be extrapolated to blood donor populations comprising women remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively assess the acute impact of blood withdrawal on cardiac function, central hemodynamics and aerobic capacity in women throughout the mature adult lifespan. Transthoracic echocardiography and O2 uptake were assessed at rest and throughout incremental exercise (cycle ergometry) in healthy women (n = 30, age: 47-77 yr). Left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV

Optimization of Exercise Countermeasures for Human Space Flight: Operational Considerations for Concurrent Strength and Aerobic Training.

The physiological challenges presented by space flight and in microgravity (μG) environments are well documented. μG environments can result in declines muscle mass, contractile strength, and functional capabilities. Previous work has focused on exercise countermeasures designed to attenuate the negative effects of μG on skeletal muscle structure, function, and contractile strength and aerobic fitness parameters. Exposure to μG environments influences both strength and aerobic type physical qualities. As such, the current exercise recommendations for those experiencing μG involve a combination

Association between cardiorespiratory fitness and colorectal cancer in the UK Biobank.

Increased cardiorespiratory fitness is related to decreased risk of major chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, but its association with colorectal cancer specifically has received very little attention. We examined the relation of cardiorespiratory fitness to colorectal cancer in 59,191 UK Biobank participants aged 39-70 years without prevalent cancer at baseline, followed from 2009 to 2014. Submaximal bicycle ergometry was conducted at study entry, and cardiorespiratory fitness was defined as physical work capacity at 75% of the maximum heart rate,

PGC-1α plays a pivotal role in simvastatin-induced exercise impairment in mice.

AIM: Statins decrease cardiovascular complications, but can induce myopathy. Here, we explored the implication of PGC-1α in statin-associated myotoxicity. METHODS: We treated PGC-1α knockout (KO), PGC-1α overexpression (OE) and wild-type (WT) mice orally with 5 mg simvastatin kg-1  day-1 for 3 weeks and assessed muscle function and metabolism. RESULTS: In WT and KO mice, but not in OE mice, simvastatin decreased grip strength, maximal running distance and vertical power assessed by ergometry. Post-exercise plasma lactate concentrations were higher in WT and KO compared to OE mice. In glycoly

[Quantification of postoperative pulmonary valve insufficiency: severity and clinical symptoms].

Surgical treatment of pulmonary stenosis may lead to inevitable valvular incompetence. The hemodynamic and clinical significance of post-operative pulmonary insufficiency (PI) is uncertain. In patients presenting cardiomegaly and reduced exercise tolerance reoperation may be considered. However, pulmonary valve replacement remains controversial. In order to elucidate the relevance of PI in the long-term post-operative course, quantitative data of PI were compared with chest radiographs and the physical condition. Thirty-one patients with a mean age of 18.5 years (3-36 years) were studied. Twen

Comparison of the cardiac output and stroke volume response to upright exercise in children with valvular and subvalvular aortic stenosis.

Cardiac output and stroke volume were evaluated in 17 children (mean age 11.5 +/- 3 years) with discrete, membranous subvalvular (Group I, n = 7) and valvular (Group II, n = 10) aortic stenosis during submaximal and maximal (greater than 75% predicted maximal oxygen consumption) upright cycle ergometry. Patients with valvular aortic stenosis were further subdivided on the basis of their aortic valve gradient at rest determined by cardiac catheterization (Group IIA, gradient less than 40 mm Hg; Group IIB, gradient greater than or equal to 40 mm Hg). These patients were matched with 17 control s

Determinants and prognostic value of blood pressure trajectories during graded exercise.

PURPOSE: The systolic blood pressure (SBP) response to exercise reflects cardiovascular health, with both exaggerated and blunted responses linked to adverse outcomes. Prior studies relied typically on peak SBP or two-point slopes for evaluation. We aimed to identify distinct SBP responses from full times-series recorded during maximal, graded exercise and assess their clinical determinants and prognostic relevance. METHODS: In this cohort study, we analysed SBP recordings from 6107 patients (mean age, 55.4 years; 45% women) who underwent maximal cycle ergometry. Group-based trajectory modell

Effects of Heart Rate-Synchronized Breathing on Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Exercise Testing: A Preliminary Case Series.

Heart rate-synchronized breathing (HRSB) -- a technique in which the respiratory cycle is entrained to the cardiac cycle -- may optimize autonomic nervous function and ventilatory efficiency, potentially improving exercise tolerance. However, its effect on the anaerobic threshold (AT) remains unclear. This study examined the influence of HRSB on AT and related physiological indices during incremental cycle ergometry in healthy young adults. Three healthy male adults (mean age: 22.3 ± 1.2 years) underwent two cardiopulmonary exercise tests on separate days: Day 1 (normal breathing, control) and

Blood Pressure Responses During Exercise Were Associated With Average Home Blood Pressure and Home Blood Pressure Variability: The Electronic Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal exercise blood pressure (BP) responses are associated with hypertension and cardiovascular disease, but their relationship with home BP over a mid- to long-term time span is unknown. METHODS: At an FHS (Framingham Heart Study) research examination (2016-2019), participants underwent maximum incremental ramp cycle ergometry cardiopulmonary exercise testing with BP measured every 2 minutes. At the same exam, English-speaking participants enrolled in the electronic FHS with an iPhone were provided with a digital BP cuff to measure home BP weekly for 1 year. Linear regression

Role of exercise stress echocardiography in systemic sclerosis: pathophysiological and prognostic significance of the systemic sclerosis with a heart failure and preserved ejection fraction phenotype.

AIMS: Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are common cardiac complications of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Exercise stress echocardiography is often used in symptomatic patients with SSc to detect abnormal increases in pulmonary pressures during exercise, but the pathophysiologic and prognostic significance of exercise stress echocardiography to assess the presence of HFpEF in these patients is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with SSc (n = 140) underwent ergometry exercise stress echocardiography with simulta

A Review of the Roles and Limitations of Noninvasive Imaging Methods for Investigating Cardiovascular Disease in Individuals with Obesity.

Body weight has increased worldwide, characterizing a pandemic of overweight and obesity. Obesity is associated with several risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, the association between increased body weight and cardiovascular disease is independent of the presence of classical cardiovascular disease risk factors. The direct effects of excessive fat tissue on the heart can cause a specific obesity-related cardiomyopathy in the absence of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and other structural heart diseases. Hemodynamic and structural changes contribute to obesity cardiomyopath

Impact of coronary artery disease on contractile function and ventricular-arterial coupling during exercise: Simultaneous assessment of left-ventricular pressure-volume and coronary pressure and flow during cardiac catheterization.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) can adversely affect left ventricular (LV) performance during exercise by impairment of contractile function in the presence of increasing afterload. By performing invasive measures of LV pressure-volume and coronary pressure and flow during exercise, we sought to accurately measure this with comparison to the control group. Sixteen patients, with CCS class >II angina and CAD underwent invasive simultaneous measurement of left ventricular pressure-volume and coronary pressure and flow velocity during cardiac catheterization. Measurements performed at rest were com
