BACKGROUND: Neuronal tissue has a limited potential to self-renew or get repaired after damage. Cell therapies using stem cells are promising approaches for the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) injuries. However, the clinical use of embryonic stem cells is limited by ethical concerns and other scientific consequences. Bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSC) could represent an alternative source of stem cells for replacement therapy. Indeed, many studies have demonstrated that MSCs can give rise to neuronal cells as well as many tissue-specific cell phenotypes.

Effective intraductal delivery of the enzyme collagenase into the pancreas is crucial to the subsequent ability to isolate viable islets. Most clinical islet transplant centers load the enzyme into the pancreas by retrograde injection using a syringe following cannulation of the pancreatic duct. The population of B lymphocytes was assessed in the blood of 16 patients with agammaglobulinemia using immunofluorescence and EAC1423 reactivity as B-cell markers. Lymphocytes were fractionated on gradients of bovine serum albumin which are capable of separating lymphocytes into B-cell-rich and T-cell-rich populations. There was complete absence of B lymphocytes in the majority of patients with X-linked agammaglobulinemia. Normal or increased numbers of B lymphocytes were found in all patients with common variable agammaglobulinemia.

PURPOSE: Fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), esterification products of ethanol and fatty acids, have been implicated as mediators of ethanol-induced organ damage. It has been shown that FAEE synthase, the enzyme responsible for the formation of FAEE, is present selectively in the organs commonly damaged by ethanol abuse. Recently, we have made the observation that FAEEs are also present in the serum after ethanol ingestion.
