Natural products proposed for the management of Huntington's disease (HD): a comprehensive review.

Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disease, typically begins in the prime of adulthood, followed by a gradual onset of specific mental abnormalities and cognitive and physical impairment. To the best of our knowledge, no medication exists to totally stop the progression of HD. Among numerous therapy techniques, extensive literature reviews have confirmed the medicinal importance of natural products in HD experimental models. This review provides a literature survey of natural compounds and medicinal plants used as neuroprotective agents against HD. Relevant studies were found in a

A RNA-seq approach for exploring the protective effect of ginkgolide B on glutamate-induced astrocytes injury.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: There is substantial experimental evidence to support the view that Ginkgo biloba L. (Ginkgoaceae), a traditional Chinese medicine known to treating stroke, has a protective effect on the central nervous system and significantly improves the cognitive dysfunction caused by disease, including alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia, and diabetic encephalopathy. Although a number of studies have reported that ginkgolide B (GB), a diterpenoid lactone compound extracted from Ginkgo biloba leaves, has neuroprotective effects, very little research has been performed

Pharmacology of delayed aging and extended lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans.

The identification and analysis of compounds that delay aging and extend lifespan is an important aspect of gerontology research; these studies can test theories of aging, lead to the discovery of endogenous systems that influence aging, and establish the foundation for treatments that might delay normal human aging. Here we review studies using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to identify and characterize compounds that delay aging and extend lifespan. These studies are considered in four groups: (1) Studies that address the free-radical theory of aging by analyzing candidate compounds wit

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Inhaled Ginkgo biloba Leaf Essential Oil in a Chronic Stress Mouse Model: Insights from Neuroimmune, Metabolic, and Gut Microbiota Remodeling.

Chronic stress induces behavioral abnormalities through coordinated neuroendocrine, inflammatory, oxidative, metabolic, and gut microbial disturbances. Plant-derived volatile fractions may modulate stress-related neurobehavioral responses, yet their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and associated neurobiological mechanisms remain insufficiently characterized. In this study, Ginkgo biloba leaf essential oil (GbO) was extracted from air-dried leaves by hydrodistillation, chemically characterized by GC-MS, and evaluated in a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model using beha

Ginkgo biloba L. in preventing cardiovascular disease: pharmacological effects, mechanism of action, and therapeutic potential.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) involve complex, interrelated pathologies such as oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, platelet aggregation, and dyslipidemia, for which single-target drugs remain constrained. As a multicomponent herbal medicine, Ginkgo biloba L. (G. biloba) contains diverse bioactive constituents, primarily flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, ginkgetin, and isoginkgetin) and ginkgolides (e.g., ginkgolide A, B, C, and J), which are proposed to exert synergistic effects against the multifaceted pathology of CVDs. This review systematically s

Bilobalide isolated from Ginkgo leaf tea alleviates Parkinson's disease via suppressing neuroinflammation and remodeling gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder with limited effective treatments. Ginkgo leaf tea (GLT), derived from the dried leaves of Ginkgo biloba, has long been consumed for its cardiovascular and neurological health benefits. However, the neuroprotective compounds in GLT and their mechanisms of action in PD remain largely unexplored. PURPOSE: This study aimed to isolate neuroprotective constituents from GLT and investigate their therapeutic potential and underlying mechanisms in the context of PD. METHODS: Neuroactive compounds were identified through b

The Potential Use of Plant Natural Products and Plant Extracts with Antioxidant Properties for the Prevention/Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases: In Vitro, In Vivo and Clinical Trials.

Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease, present a major health issue and financial burden for health care systems around the world. The impact of these diseases will further increase over the next decades due to increasing life expectancies. No cure is currently available for the treatment of these conditions; only drugs, which merely alleviate the symptoms. Oxidative stress has long been associated with neurodegeneration, whether as a cause or as part of the downstream results caused by other factors. Thus, the use of antioxida

EGb761 attenuates depressive-like behaviours induced by long-term light deprivation in C57BL/6J mice through inhibition of NF-κB-IL-6 signalling pathway.

Our previous investigation found that Ginkgo extract EGb761 could attenuate the depressive-like behaviours induced by a single injection of lipopolysaccharide in mice. However, it has not been investigated whether EGb761 is effective on depressive-like behaviours induced by long-term light deprivation and whether its effects are associated with the inhibition of NF-κB-IL-6 signalling pathway. In this study, three groups (vehicle group, EGb761 low-dose group, and EGb761 high-dose group) of C57BL/6J male mice were exposed to constant darkness for four weeks. The control mice remained on a 12 : 1
