A POD-NN methodology to determine in vivo mechanical properties of soft tissues. Application to human cornea deformed by Corvis ST test.

The interaction between optical and biomechanical properties of the corneal tissue is crucial for the eye's ability to refract and focus light. The mechanical properties vary among individuals and can change over time due to factors such as eye growth, ageing, and diseases like keratoconus. Estimating these properties is crucial for diagnosing ocular conditions, improving surgical outcomes, and enhancing vision quality, especially given increasing life expectancies and societal demands. Current ex-vivo methods for evaluating corneal mechanical properties are limited and not patient-specific. T

Monitoring strategies for continuous evaluation of deployed clinical prediction models.

OBJECTIVE: As machine learning adoption in clinical practice continues to grow, deployed classifiers must be continuously monitored and updated (retrained) to protect against data drift that stems from inevitable changes, including evolving medical practices and shifting patient populations. However, successful clinical machine learning classifiers will lead to a change in care which may change the distribution of features, labels, and their relationship. For example, "high risk" cases that were correctly identified by the model may ultimately get labeled as "low risk" thanks to an interventio

Real-time visualization of endoscope-brain interactions using a transparent ventricular model.

PURPOSE: Safe intraventricular neuroendoscopy requires refined instrument control within narrow and often distorted working corridors. A significant proportion of surgical complications-such as forniceal injury and vascular compromise-arises from mechanical interactions between the endoscope shaft/sheath and intraventricular structures that remain invisible to the surgeon during the procedure. No existing high-fidelity simulator allows for the real-time, external visualization of these "blind" movements. We developed a novel, high-clarity transparent ventricular model to clarify these interact

Cognitive resource impairment and systemic integration syndrome (CRISIS) in critical care teams: a scoping review and conceptual framework.

PURPOSE: High-acuity critical care environments impose extreme environmental and cognitive demands on healthcare teams. Yet, existing human factor models and individual burnout scales insufficiently explain acute, collective neurocognitive failures. The purpose of this scoping review is to inductively synthesize the existing literature to propose a novel conceptual framework: Cognitive Resource Impairment and Systemic Integration Syndrome (CRISIS) in critical care teams. METHOD: Guided by PRISMA 2020, we conducted a scoping review and inductive thematic synthesis of multidisciplinary literatu

Spatio-Temporal Garment Reconstruction Using Diffusion Mapping via Pattern Coordinates.

Reconstructing 3D clothed humans from monocular images and videos is a fundamental problem with applications in virtual try-on, avatar creation, and mixed reality. Despite significant progress in human body recovery, accurately reconstructing garment geometry, particularly for loose-fitting clothing, remains an open challenge. We propose a unified framework for high-fidelity 3D garment reconstruction from both single images and video sequences. Our approach combines Implicit Sewing Patterns (ISP) with a generative diffusion model to learn expressive garment shape priors in 2D UV space. Leverag

Physics-Guided Decision-Support Framework for Melt Pool Prediction and Process Stability in Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Nitinol.

Powder bed fusion-laser beam (PBF-LB) of nickel-titanium (NiTi) has attracted increasing interest in aerospace, biomedical, and energy applications owing to its shape memory and superelastic properties, combined with the capability to fabricate complex geometries. However, the strong sensitivity of NiTi to thermal history and process variability makes predictive modeling and process parameter selection challenging. In this work, a physics-guided decision-support framework is developed for melt pool prediction and stability assessment during the PBF-LB processing of NiTi. A high-fidelity therma

3D vs. 2D simulated fetoscopy for spina bifida repair: a quantitative motion analysis.

3D imaging technology is becoming more prominent every day. However, more validation is needed to understand the actual benefit of 3D versus conventional 2D vision. This work quantitatively investigates whether experts benefit from 3D vision during minimally invasive fetoscopic spina bifida (fSB) repair. A superiority study was designed involving one expert team ([Formula: see text] procedures prior) who performed six 2D and six 3D fSB repair simulations in a high-fidelity animal training model, using 3-port access. The 6D motion of the instruments was recorded. Among the motion metrics are to

Three-Dimensional Photorealistic and Virtual Reality Study of the Supratentorial Ventricular System in Relation to Superficial Cranial and Cerebral Landmarks.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The complex spatial organization and deeply embedded position of the cerebral ventricular system present substantial difficulties for anatomic comprehension, particularly among neurosurgical trainees and residents. These challenges are most pronounced in understanding the supratentorial ventricular system's orientation and its projection to superficial cortical and cranial structures. To investigate how advanced three-dimensional (3D) anatomic reconstructions, using photogrammetry and virtual reality (VR) technologies, may offer an educational tool-providing interact

Neuro-fuzzy adaptive model predictive control for enhanced voltage stability in transmission systems.

Contemporary high-voltage (HV) transmission networks are increasingly strained by rapid load growth and the stochastic integration of renewable energy resources, forcing grids to operate perilously close to their critical stability margins. Voltage collapse-the progressive, irreversible decline of bus voltages culminating in widespread blackouts-represents the most severe consequence of this operational stress. While Model Predictive Control (MPC) offers systematic, constraint-aware trajectory optimisation for voltage regulation, conventional implementations rely on static weighting matrices t

Education on-demand: the development of a simulator-based medical education service.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical medical education depends on the availability of instructive patient encounters, or "good teaching cases." While all medical students hope to see enough patients of sufficient scope and variety, exposure to good teaching cases has been traditionally limited by time and chance. Students may graduate from medical school without having seen a number of important cases, each of which may represent a knowledge gap they will carry forward into internship and future patient care. Recently, however, the advent of high-fidelity patient simulators has enabled instructors to recreate

Learning from multiple annotators for medical image segmentation.

Supervised machine learning methods have been widely developed for segmentation tasks in recent years. However, the quality of labels has high impact on the predictive performance of these algorithms. This issue is particularly acute in the medical image domain, where both the cost of annotation and the inter-observer variability are high. Different human experts contribute estimates of the "actual" segmentation labels in a typical label acquisition process, influenced by their personal biases and competency levels. The performance of automatic segmentation algorithms is limited when these noi

Benchmarking Active Spot Selection for Cost-Efficient Spatial Transcriptomics.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) measures gene expression in tissue context, but dense capture grids can be costly and may repeatedly sample morphologically similar regions. Most active learning strategies were developed for categorical labels and independent samples. We conduct a retrospective pool-based benchmark of active learning versus uniform Random sampling for ST, where expression vectors are high-dimensional and continuous and candidates are spatially correlated. Using two fully profiled public ST cohorts, we mask candidate expression vectors and simulate multi-round selection with uncert

Nationwide needs assessment on the potential use of virtual reality in teaching birth mechanics: perceptions of students and teaching professionals in midwifery and medicine in Germany.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive understanding of birth mechanics is essential for safe and competent practice in obstetrics and midwifery. These dynamic, three-dimensional processes occur internally and are not directly observable, making them challenging to teach with traditional methods. Virtual Reality (VR) offers unique potential to visualize such complex, invisible mechanisms. This nationwide survey assessed the perceived need, curricular contexts, and preferred content for a high-fidelity VR application to teach birth mechanics in midwifery and medical education. METHODS: An anonymous, digit

Improving Chest Compression Quality in Cardiac Arrest: A Multimodal Intervention Project in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Survival from cardiac arrest is critically dependent on high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite evidence-based guidelines, achieving optimal cardiopulmonary resuscitation quality remains a significant challenge in the emergency department. The emergency department demonstrated persistent suboptimal adherence to evidence-based chest compression quality metrics during cardiac arrest resuscitations, with marked deviation from American Heart Association guidelines during high-acuity events. This theory-practice gap was reflected in the chest compression fraction of 65% am

A dataset of high-resolution snapshots of the viscous sublayer from direct numerical simulation of a turbulent boundary layer up to Re θ=2400.

This dataset comprises time-resolved 3D fluid field data (pressure and the three velocity components) from the viscous sublayer of a canonical zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer. In total it contains 16,384 snapshots, amounting to approximately 11.1 TiB of data (pre-compression). In addition to the snapshot data, the dataset also includes time-averaged turbulent statistics over the full boundary layer for the four primary quantities (pressure and velocity) together with the second-order velocity products, enabling validation and comparison with existing literature.
