A retrospective study of unexpected deaths with alcohol use disorder from Japanese forensic autopsy cases.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is an important target for prevention of alcohol-related problems. In this study, we analyzed forensic autopsy cases to reveal the characteristics of the living conditions and death situations of individuals with AUD. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 486 cases with a history of alcohol consumption for which a forensic autopsy was performed from 2012 to 2021 in Yamaguchi prefecture. Judgement of AUD was made using DSM-5. Various factors were compared statistically between AUD and non-AUD cases. RESULTS: Of the 486 cases, 225 (46.2%) were judged t

Correlates of agitation and depression in nursing home residents with dementia.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between dementia severity, age, gender, and prescription of psychotropics, and syndromes of agitation and depression in a sample of nursing home residents with dementia. METHODS: The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) was administered to residents with dementia (N = 304) of 18 nursing homes. Agitation symptoms were clustered using factorial analysis. Depression was estimated using the Dementia Mood Assessment Scale (DMAS). Dementia severity was assessed categorically using predefined cut-off scores derived from

Psychotic vulnerability in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: associations with clinical features and treatment outcome in two clinical samples.

Children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are at increased risk of psychotic disorders; however, the manifestations and clinical implications of psychotic vulnerability among youth with OCD remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of psychotic vulnerability in youth with OCD across two independent samples. Using the Thought Problems Scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), we assessed 215 Scandinavian and 125 North American children and adolescents with OCD. Participants with and without psychotic vulnerabili

Sleep quality in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although the effect of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) on sleep is not well-known, recent studies suggest an association between OCD and sleep quality. AIMS: We aimed to assess sleep quality in children and adolescents with OCD and to seek its association with OCD symptoms and OCD severity. METHODS: All of the subjects were assessed using DSM 5 and affective disorders and schizophrenia for school-age children - present and lifetime version, which is based on DSM-IV. The Yale-Brown obsessive-compulsive scale and children's Yale-Brown obsessive-compulsive scale were applied to

Prospective associations between disgust proneness and OCD symptoms: Specificity to excessive washing compulsions.

Although considerable evidence has linked disgust proneness (DP) to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), few studies have examined the extent to which DP predicts OCD symptoms over time. Further, it remains unclear if DP is a risk factor for the contamination subtype of OCD specifically or if it is prospectively associated with other OCD symptom subtypes. The present study sought to address these gaps in the literature with a large sample of unselected community participants (n = 497) that completed measures of DP and OCD symptoms monthly over a 6-month period. Latent growth analysis revealed

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Anxiety Disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety disorders share the basic clinical feature of anxiety, which probably explains their common response to similar pharmacological and psychological interventions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation technique that has proved effective in reducing the symptoms of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders. It was also used in healthy subjects to modulate neuropsychological processes that are involved in the pathophysiology of anxiety. We review the published studies in which tDCS was

Manifesto for a European research network into obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (O-CRDs) are highly disabling psychiatric illnesses of early-onset. They are responsible for considerable morbidity and socioeconomic burden. Existing treatments are usually only partially successful and there is an urgent need to understand the aetiological factors and neurobiological bases of the disorders in order to develop new and more effective strategies for prevention, early detection and effective treatment. Emerging data from the neurosciences supports the reconceptualisation of obsessive-compulsive disorder as a spectrum disorder, related t

Allele variants in functional MicroRNA target sites of the neurotrophin-3 receptor gene (NTRK3) as susceptibility factors for anxiety disorders.

Genetic and functional data indicate that variation in the expression of the neurotrophin-3 receptor gene (NTRK3) may have an impact on neuronal plasticity, suggesting a role for NTRK3 in the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders. MicroRNA (miRNA) posttranscriptional gene regulators act by base-pairing to specific sequence sites, usually at the 3'UTR of the target mRNA. Variants at these sites might result in gene expression changes contributing to disease susceptibility. We investigated genetic variation in two different isoforms of NTRK3 as candidate susceptibility factors for anxiety by rese

Gender differences in obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions.

The aim of our study was to assess the role of gender in OCD symptom dimensions with a multivariate analysis while controlling for history of tic disorders and age at onset of OCD. One hundred and eighty-six consecutive outpatients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of OCD were interviewed. Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (YBOC-S), YBOC-S Symptom Checklist, and Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Scales were administered to all patients. Lifetime history of tic disorders was assessed with the tic inventory section of the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale. Age at onset of OCD was assessed by direct intervi

Treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Adolescents and Adults with Down Syndrome: Results from a Scoping Rapid Review.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and adults with Down syndrome are noted to display symptoms and behaviors consistent with a diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. While evidenced-based interventions, including psychopharmacology and therapeutic interventions including exposure and response prevention, exist and effectively treat obsessive-compulsive symptoms in neurotypical populations, less is known about effective treatments for similar presentations in persons with Down syndrome. METHODS: A scoping rapid review was conducted in April 2023 to determine what treatments are being used to target obs

Impact of Benzodiazepines and Illness Duration on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder during COVID-19 in Italy: Exploring Symptoms' Evolutionary Benefits.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is believed to follow a waxing and waning course, often according to environmental stressors. During the COVID-19 pandemic, pre-existing OCD symptoms were reported to increase and to change from checking to washing behaviors, while new-onset symptoms were predominantly of the hoarding type. In the present study, we followed the evolution of OCD symptoms, anxiety, depression, and insights of illness in forty-six OCD patients throughout the pandemic. Clinical measures were collected at four different time points before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy

Hashimoto Encephalopathy Presenting with Acute Psychosis and Inappropriate Secretion of Antidiuretic Hormone: A Rare Case Responding to Steroid Therapy.

BACKGROUND Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is an autoimmune encephalopathy that can involve various symptoms including psychosis. Syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) may be a complication in some neurological diseases. However, the simultaneous occurrence of subacute psychosis and SIADH as the manifestation of HE, observed in the present case, has rarely been reported. CASE REPORT A 72-year-old man was hospitalized with a 4-month history of abnormal behaviors, including talkativeness, stopping consumption of coffee and cigarettes, hoarding garbage, and sleep dis

The cognitive basis of psychosocial impact in COVID-19 pandemic. Does it encircle the default mode network of the brain? A pragmatic proposal.

Epigenetics, hypothalamic-pituitary axes, environmental and metabolic influences, and transgenerational plasticity govern social behavior. Cognitive research considers the brain's default mode network (DMN) as a central hub that integrates various cognitive and social processing domains responsible for emotion perception, empathy, theory of mind, and morality. Hence, DMN is regarded as the "social brain." Upsurge in social turmoil, social anxiety, panic, depression, post-traumatic stress, hoarding, herd behavior, substance and behavioral addictions, sexual abuse, and violence in the time of th

New pharmacological and neuromodulation approaches for impulsive-compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) display a set of impulsive-compulsive behaviors at some point during the course of illness. These behaviors range from the so-called behavioral addictions to dopamine dysregulation syndrome, punding and hoarding disorders. These behaviors have been consistently linked to the use of dopaminergic medications used to treat PD motor symptoms (dopamine agonists, levodopa, and other agents) and less consistently to neuromodulation techniques such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). Since there are still no approved treatme

Validation of the Chinese Version of Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised.

BACKGROUND: The Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) is a psychometrically sound and valid self-report measure for evaluating the severity of six dimensions of obsessive-compulsive symptoms: washing, obsessing, hoarding, ordering, checking, and neutralising. We aimed to validate the Chinese version of the OCI-R (C-OCI-R) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in Hong Kong. METHODS: The C-OCI-R was forward and backward translated and reviewed by an expert panel and a focus group. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability (2-week interval) were examined. The speed of progression towards obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is current interest in the elaboration of early intervention programs for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To this end, it is important to investigate the speed of progression from subthreshold symptoms to diagnosable OCD. In this study, we have retrospectively investigated the speed of progression towards full-blown OCD and sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with a faster transition. METHODS: Patients enrolled in the Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (N = 954) were interviewed with a comprehensive assessment battery t

Forkhead box A3 mediates glucocorticoid receptor function in adipose tissue.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely prescribed anti-inflammatory agents, but their chronic use leads to undesirable side effects such as excessive expansion of adipose tissue. We have recently shown that the forkhead box protein A3 (Foxa3) is a calorie-hoarding factor that regulates the selective enlargement of epididymal fat depots and suppresses energy expenditure in a nutritional- and age-dependent manner. It has been demonstrated that Foxa3 levels are elevated in adipose depots in response to high-fat diet regimens and during the aging process; however no studies to date have elucidated the m
