Retrospective analysis of illness and liver abscesses in low-risk, crossbred beef cattle.

BACKGROUND: Liver abscesses are a major economic concern in beef production, yet the relationship between therapeutic health events and liver abscess development remains poorly understood. This study evaluates how health diagnoses, therapeutic treatments, and the timing of these events across the production cycle relate to liver abscess prevalence in a large population of low-risk, crossbred beef cattle. METHODS: Binary liver abscess phenotypes and lifetime treatment records were analyzed for 9,527 animals using generalized linear mixed models. Health events were summarized by diagnosis, trea

Ocular immune responses in steers following intranasal vaccination with recombinant Moraxella bovis cytotoxin adjuvanted with polyacrylic acid.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) caused by Moraxella bovis is the most common eye disease of cattle. The pathogenesis of M. bovis requires the expression of pili that enable the organism to attach to the ocular surface and an RTX (repeats in the structural toxin) toxin (cytotoxin or hemolysin), which is cytotoxic to corneal epithelial cells. In this pilot study, ocular mucosal immune responses of steers were measured following intranasal (i.n.) vaccination with a recombinant M. bovis cytotoxin adjuvanted with polyacrylic acid. Beef steers were vaccinated with either 500 μg (n = 3)

Serologic and protective characterization of Moraxella bovis pili.

This study was conducted to determine the protective nature of purified M. bovis EPP 63 pili in controlling experimentally induced Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis, and to determine antigenic similarity of pili isolated from various M. bovis isolates. Ten calves were vaccinated twice, 28 days apart, with 5.0 mg (protein) EPP 63 purified pili. Ten calves were maintained as non-vaccinated controls. All calves were exposed to ultraviolet light prior to challenge. The calves were challenged by instilling approximately 2.0 X 10(8) CFU of EPP 63 piliated organisms into the conjunctival sac. An

An adenovirus 4 outbreak amongst staff in a pediatric ward manifesting as keratoconjunctivitis-a possible failure of contact and aerosol infection control.

An adenovirus serotype 4 outbreak was identified on a pediatric ward involving 4 members of the health care staff. Two inpatients on the ward at the time (1 immunocompromised) were shedding this virus from their respiratory tracts and could have acted as independent index cases for the staff infections. Significantly, upon investigation, it was found that staff members were unaware that adenoviruses are not completely eliminated by alcohol gel handrubs and that soap and water handwashing is also required.

No sequence variation in part of the hexon and the fibre genes of adenovirus 8 isolated from patients with conjunctivitis or epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) in Norway during 1989 to 1996.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Several local epidemics of keratoconjunctivitis/conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus type 8 (Ad8) occurred in Norway from August 1995 to May 1996. A smaller epidemic occurred in 1992. The Ad8 hexon forms the surface of the virion and contains the hypervariable regions loop I(1) and loop I(2). The fibre mediates the primary contact with cells. Sequence variation in hexon and fibre genes might play an important role in the pathogenicity of adenoviruses. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic variability at the hexon and fibre genes in 26 strains of Ad8 isolated from

A multiplex real-time PCR assay for the detection and differentiation of five bovine pinkeye pathogens.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), also known as pinkeye, is one of the most common eye diseases in cattle. Several pathogens have been associated with IBK cases, however, Moraxella bovis, Moraxella bovoculi, Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma bovoculi and bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) are most frequently observed. A multiplex real-time PCR assay using two reactions was developed for the detection and differentiation of these five pathogens. Detection sensitivities of the multiplex assays were compared to singleplex reactions testing for the same targets. Correlation coefficients (R2)

Detection of bovine herpesvirus 1 sequences in yaks (Bos grunniens) with keratoconjunctivitis, using a highly sensitive nested polymerase chain reaction.

Thirty-seven yaks (Bos grunniens) with keratoconjunctivitis and 22 healthy yaks were used to investigate the role of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) in keratoconjunctivitis in yaks. Nucleic acid sequences of BoHV-1 glycoproteins B and E were detected in conjunctival swabs from all yaks with keratoconjunctivitis using a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In 21 yaks, BoHV-1 sequences were detected along with Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) and Neisseria spp. The amplified BoHV-1 sequences were identical, and no nucleotide variation was observed when compared with a BoHV-1 reference strain using si

Pathogenicity and immunogenicity of piliated and nonpiliated phases of Moraxella bovis in calves.

Pathogenicity evaluations of Moraxella bovis strain EPP 63 grown in the piliated and nonpiliated phase indicated that the organism grown in the piliated phase induced clinical keratoconjunctivitis, whereas the organism grown in the nonpiliated phase did not induce disease under identical challenge conditions. Calves inoculated with culture grown in the piliated phase developed significantly (P less than 0.01) higher lesion scores than did calves inoculated with culture grown in the nonpiliated phase. Vaccination/challenge exposure evaluations indicated that calves immunized with vaccine prepar

Prolonged recovery of desiccated adenoviral serotypes 5, 8, and 19 from plastic and metal surfaces in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of the spread of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) at eye care facilities (doctors' offices, clinics, hospitals) has been a major public health goal for ophthalmology for more than 50 years. The authors explored a potentially contributing attribute of the adenovirus serotypes that cause EKC. Specifically, they investigated the capacity of different clinical and laboratory ocular serotypes (AD8, 19, and 5) to survive for extended periods of time in a desiccated state. METHODS: Twenty microliters containing 2000 plaque-forming units of different ATCC laboratory adenovir

Innate immunity in ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infection: contribution of IL8 and CSF2 gene variants to risk of trachomatous scarring in Gambians.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma, a chronic keratoconjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is the world's commonest infectious cause of blindness. Blindness is due to progressive scarring of the conjunctiva (trachomatous scarring) leading to in-turning of eyelashes (trichiasis) and corneal opacification. We evaluated the contribution of genetic variation across the chemokine and cytokine clusters in chromosomes 4q and 5q31 respectively to risk of scarring trachoma and trichiasis in a large case-control association study in a Gambian population. METHODS: Linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping was used

From Molecular Mechanism to the Etiology of Sjogren Syndrome.

Sjogren's Syndrome (SS) is a chronic, female overwhelming fundamental issue of an immune system rheumatic sickness that influences the whole body. It is described by lymphocytic invasion of the exocrine viz. salivary and lacrimal glands and by surprising B-cell hyperactivity. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye) and Stomatitis sicca (oral dryness) are the primary visual appearances of SS. The primary SS is recognized from secondary SS which happens as a piece of other immune system maladies. The secondary SS exists together particularly with fundamental lupus erythematosus (15- 36%), rheumatoi

Isolation and Identification of Mycoplasma agalactiae by Culture and Polymerase Chain Reaction Methods in the Sheep Herds in Guilan Province, Iran.

Contagious agalactia is an infectious syndrome of sheep that is characterized by mastitis with reduction of milk production, arthritis, abortion, and keratoconjunctivitis. The disease is rapidly spread by the contact of the infected animals with the healthy ones. Domestic sheep and goats of both sexes can be infected at an equivalent frequency. Most of the researchers use culture and molecular methods for the isolation and identification of Mycoplasma. Mycoplasma agalactiae is the main cause of the disease in sheep. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify M. agalactiae by using cultu

Pain and sickness behavior associated with corneal lesions in dairy calves.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common corneal disease of calves that adversely affects animal welfare by causing pain and weight loss. Identifying behavioral indicators of pain and sickness in calves with IBK is necessary for designing studies that aim to identify effective means of pain mitigation. Consistent with principles of the 3Rs for animal use in research, data from a randomized blinded challenge study was used to identify and describe variation of behaviors that could serve as reliable indicators of pain and sickness in calves with corneal injuries.
