An overview of existing raptor contaminant monitoring activities in Europe.

Biomonitoring using raptors as sentinels can provide early warning of the potential impacts of contaminants on humans and the environment and also a means of tracking the success of associated mitigation measures. Examples include detection of heavy metal-induced immune system impairment, PCB-induced altered reproductive impacts, and toxicity associated with lead in shot game. Authorisation of such releases and implementation of mitigation is now increasingly delivered through EU-wide directives but there is little established pan-European monitoring to quantify outcomes. We investigated the p

Hidden toxicities: assessing city-wide contamination by potentially toxic elements from illegal dumping in Jackson, Mississippi.

Illegal dumping is widespread where waste collection is unreliable, and municipal responses usually end with removal of visible waste, leaving the underlying soil unexamined. We asked whether elemental enrichment persists below the surface once waste is cleared, whether lithogenic and waste-derived contributions can be separated using field-portable screening alone, and whether a low-cost protocol can prioritize sites in a city without laboratory capacity. At 45 community-reported dumping sites across Jackson, Mississippi, we measured eight potentially toxic elements (the metalloid arsenic wit

DIA-Based Quantitative Proteomics Reveals Adaptive Responses and Potential Mechanisms of Se(IV) Resistance in Rhodococcus qingshengii PM1.

Microbial reduction of soluble selenium oxyanions is a sustainable strategy for remediating selenium-contaminated environments, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying selenite tolerance in the genus Rhodococcus remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the proteomic adaptation of the highly tolerant strain Rhodococcus qingshengii PM1 under high-concentration selenite stress (50 mM Na2SeO3) using a data-independent acquisition (DIA)-based quantitative proteomics approach. A total of 3335 proteins were identified, and 3310 proteins were retained for downstream analysis. Comparati

The miR-125a-5p/IRF4 Axis Mediates Sodium Arsenite-Induced M2 Macrophage Polarization.

Arsenic, a ubiquitous metalloid, is commonly found in surface waters; as well as serious human health issues, it also induces systemic diseases and carcinogenesis upon chronic exposure. To better understand how arsenic potentially alters the immune system, it is important to study its effects on macrophage polarization. Micro-RNA plays an epigenetic regulatory role in organisms. The miR-125 family regulates macrophage polarization and tumorigenesis, yet its role in arsenic-induced macrophage polarization remains unexplored. This study investigated the mechanism of sodium arsenite (NaAsO2)-driv

Selenium regulated the responses of soil bacterial communities to short-term elevated atmospheric CO2 stress.

Recent studies highlight essential metallic micronutrients (e.g., zinc, nickel, copper, iron, manganese) in influencing soil microbial structure and functions. However, the roles of metalloid micronutrients like selenium (Se) are still underexplored. To fill this gap, this study conducted an experiment in which soils were incubated at ambient (435 ppm) and elevated (800 ppm) atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations within the short term of 6 weeks. The results exhibited that elevated CO2 significantly impacted the α-diversity of the bacterial community (p < 0.05). Yet, the Se addition (

Boron bioavailability enhanced by foliar applied fulvic acid to improve grain yield and quality of fine basmati rice.

Boron is a critical yet poorly understood micronutrient, especially regarding its transport within plant leaves. Little research has been done to enhance the bioavailability of Boron in rice using organic compounds like fulvic acid for better nutrient quality and yield. While fulvic acid (FA) is well-known for enhancing the mobility of metallic nutrients like iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), however, its role in facilitating Boron, a metalloid, remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potential of FA in mediating Boron transport to improve grain quality and yield in Basmati rice. A

LC-MS based untargeted metabolomics studies of the metabolic response of Ginkgo biloba extract on arsenism patients.

Arsenic is an environmentally ubiquitous toxic metalloid. Chronic exposure to arsenic may lead to arsenicosis, while no specific therapeutic strategies are available for the arsenism patients. And Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) exhibited protective effect in our previous study. However, the mechanisms by which GBE protects the arsenism patients remain poorly understood. A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based untargeted metabolomics analysis was used to study metabolic response in arsenism patients upon GBE intervention. In total, 39 coal-burning type of arsenism patients and 50 h

The activation of TLR4-MyD88 signaling promotes hepatic dysfunction and fibrotic changes in SD rats resulting from prolonged exposure to sodium arsenite.

Arsenic, a poisonous metalloid element, is linked to liver diseases, but the exactmechanisms for this process are not yet to be completely elucidated. Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4), acting as a pathogenic pattern recognition receptor, plays a pivotal role in various inflammatory diseases via the myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) pathway. This study aims to investigate the involvement of the TLR4-MyD88 signaling pathway in liver injury induced by prolonged exposure to sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) in Sprague-Dawley rats. Our research findings demonstratethe activation of TLR4-MyD88 signaling p

Dissecting the role of cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

The objective of the present study was to review the existing epidemiological and laboratory findings supporting the role of toxic metal exposure in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The existing epidemiological studies demonstrate that cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg) exposure was associated both with an increased risk of NAFLD and altered biochemical markers of liver injury. Laboratory studies demonstrated that metal exposure induces hepatic lipid accumulation resulting from activation of lipogenesis and inhibition of fatty acid β-oxidation due to up-regulatio

Substance flow analysis of arsenic and its discharge reduction in the steelworks.

Although certain emission standards have been implemented to reduce the air pollution from the steel industry, heavy metal pollution associated with steel production in China has not been well addressed yet. Arsenic is a metalloid element, commonly present in various compounds in many minerals. When it presents in steelworks, it not only affects the quality of steel products, but also causes environmental consequences such as soil degradation, water contamination, air pollution and associated biodiversity loss and public health risks. At present, most of the studies on arsenic were limited to

Iron-based passivator mitigates the coupling process of anaerobic methane oxidation and arsenate reduction in paddy soils.

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid that is ubiquitous in paddy soils, where passivation is the most widely used method for remediating As contamination. Recently, anaerobic methane oxidation coupled with arsenate (As(V)) reduction (AOM-AsR) has been shown to act as a critical driver for As release in paddy fields. However, the effect and mechanism of the passivators on the AOM-AsR process remain unclear. In this study, we incubated arsenate-contaminated paddy soils under anaerobic conditions. Using isotopically labelled methane and different passivators, we found that an iron-based passivator c

Stabilization of As, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in soil using amendments--a review.

The spread of contaminants in soil can be hindered by the soil stabilization technique. Contaminant immobilizing amendments decrease trace element leaching and their bioavailability by inducing various sorption processes: adsorption to mineral surfaces, formation of stable complexes with organic ligands, surface precipitation and ion exchange. Precipitation as salts and co-precipitation can also contribute to reducing contaminant mobility. The technique can be used in in situ and ex situ applications to reclaim and re-vegetate industrially devastated areas and mine-spoils, improve soil quality

Co-utilization of manganous nitrate and pyrolusite enables concurrent mitigation of arsenic mobilization and greenhouse gas emissions in paddy-field wetlands.

Constructed wetlands face the dual challenge of arsenic (As) mobilization and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under flooded anoxic conditions. Moving beyond single-process remediation, this study developed a synergistic strategy through the co-application of manganous nitrate (Mn(NO3)2) and pyrolusite (MnO2) in microcosms simulating As-contaminated paddy-field wetlands. The results demonstrated that the Mn(NO3)2+MnO2 treatment achieved near-complete As(III) immobilization in the overlying water, significantly outperforming other amendments (KNO3-alone, MnO2-alone and KNO3+MnO2) during a 24d-inc

Phytochemicals in the Management of Arsenic Toxicity.

Arsenic toxicity is a major concern due to its deleterious consequences for human health. Rapid industrialization also has weakened the quality of the environment by introducing pollutants that may disrupt balanced ecosystems, adversely and irreversibly impacting humans, plants, and animals. Arsenic, an important toxicant among all environmental hazards, can lead to several detrimental effects on cells and organs, impacting the overall quality of life. Nevertheless, arsenic also has a rich history as a chemotherapeutic agent used in ancient days for the treatment of diseases such as malaria, c

Systematic Review of Metallic, Industrial, and Pharmaceutical Emerging Contaminants in Snow and Ice: A Global Perspective from Polar and High-Mountain Regions.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) comprise diverse pollutant classes that are increasingly detected in remote environments due to their persistence and long-range transport potential. In cold regions, atmospheric cold-trapping processes favour their accumulation in high-altitude and high-latitude snow and ice, which act as sensitive archives and secondary sources of contamination. While previous studies have addressed individual environmental compartments (e.g., snowpack, glacier ice, meltwater), focusing on specific contaminant classes, a systematic review integrating the occurrence, behaviour and

Abnormal erythrocyte-related parameters in children with Pb, Cr, Cu and Zn exposure.

The link between exposure to a particular heavy metal or metalloid and the development of anemia is well established. However, the association between combined exposure to multiple heavy metal(loid)s and anemia in children is still lacking in evidence. In this study, a total of 266 children aged 3 to 7 were recruited from Guiyu, China. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure blood heavy metal(loid) concentrations. Blood cell count, hemoglobin (HGB), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCH
