Cutaneous paraneoplastic pemphigus syndrome associated with undifferentiated uterine sarcoma.

Pemphigus is a group of autoimmune intraepidermal blistering diseases caused by immunoglobulins directed against keratinocyte cell surface components. In this case report, we identify a non-classical paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) foliaceous related to an undifferentiated uterine sarcoma. The patient is a 54-year-old Chinese female with a past medical history of arthritis who presented with worsening fatigue in November 2017 and an itchy, blistering, erythematous annular plaque that first appeared on her chest in February 2018. Given high suspicion for primary immunobullous disease despite neg

Prevalence, source and risk of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Lake Tai (China) deciphered by metagenomic assembly: A comparison with other global lakes.

Lakes are one of the natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in environments. Long retention times in lakes potentially allow ARGs to persist and may create increased opportunities for the emergence of resistant pathogens. In this study, we investigated the prevalence, source and dissemination risk of ARGs in the sediments of a typical urban lake, Lake Tai (China) which has been a drastic example of water pollution with eutrophication in the world due to its proliferated cyanobacterial blooms. High-throughput profilings of ARGs in the sediments of Lake Tai were characterized w

Peritoneal dialysis associated infections: An update on diagnosis and management.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is associated with a high risk of infection of the peritoneum, subcutaneous tunnel and catheter exit site. Although quality standards demand an infection rate < 0.67 episodes/patient/year on dialysis, the reported overall rate of PD associated infection is 0.24-1.66 episodes/patient/year. It is estimated that for every 0.5-per-year increase in peritonitis rate, the risk of death increases by 4% and 18% of the episodes resulted in removal of the PD catheter and 3.5% resulted in death. Improved diagnosis, increased awareness of causative agents in addition to other measu

Peritoneal infections.

Peritoneal dialysis related infections include infection of the catheter exit site, subcutaneous pathway, or effluent. Exit-site infections, predominately owing to Staphylococcus aureus, are defined as purulent drainage at the exit site, although erythema may be a less serious type of exit-site infection. Tunnel infections are underdiagnosed clinically, and sonography of the tunnel is useful to delineate the extent of the infection and to evaluate response to antibiotic therapy. S aureus infections occur more frequently in S aureus carriers and immunosuppressed patients and can be reduced by m

EPIBACDIAL: a multicenter prospective study of risk factors for bacteremia in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Bacteremic infections are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in chronic hemodialysis patients. New developments in managing these patients (erythropoietin therapy, nasal mupirocin, long-term implanted catheters, and synthetic membranes) may have altered the epidemiologic patterns of bacteremia in dialysis patients. This multicenter prospective cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the current incidence of and risk factors for bacteremia in chronic hemodialysis patients in France. A total of 988 adults on chronic hemodialysis for 1 mo or longer was followed up prospectively f

Topical eucalyptol accelerates the healing of MRSA-infected diabetic wounds in rats by regulating TLR4, NF-κB, VEGFA and MMP-9 pathways.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic-infected wounds are complex conditions that cause chronic inflammation that is difficult to heal. Although eucalyptol (1.8 cineole) has been shown to have antimicrobial, antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, its effectiveness in diabetic-infected wounds has not yet been proven. METHODS: In this study, 35 male Wistar albino rats were induced with streptozotocin and inoculated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) after full-thickness skin wounds were inoculated. The animals were randomly assigned into five groups: Control (C), Vehicle (V), 2% Mu

Concentration-Dependent Global Quantitative Proteome Response of Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A Biofilms to Subinhibitory Tigecycline.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a leading cause of biofilm-associated infections on implanted medical devices. During the treatment of an infection, bacterial cells inside biofilms may be exposed to sublethal concentrations of the antimicrobial agents. In the present study, the effect of subinhibitory concentrations of tigecycline (TC) on biofilms formed by S. epidermidis strain RP62A was investigated using a quantitative global proteomic technique. Sublethal concentrations of TC [1/8 (T1) and 1/4 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) (T2)] promoted biofilm production in strain RP62A, but 1/2 M

SF5- and SCF3-substituted tetrahydroquinoline compounds as potent bactericidal agents against multidrug-resistant persister Gram-positive bacteria.

Bacteria persister cells are immune to most antibiotics and hence compounds that are active against persister bacteria are needed. We screened a chemical library of SF5- and SCF3-substituted tetrahydroquinoline compounds, synthesized via the Povarov reaction, for antibacterial activity and identified active compounds that displayed good activities against many Gram-positive bacteria, including persisters. The most potent of these compounds, HSD1835, inhibited the growth of drug-resistant Gram-positive bacterial pathogens (including clinical strains) at concentrations ranging from 1 μg mL-1 to
