The vagus neurometabolic interface and clinical disease.

The nervous system both monitors and modulates body metabolism to maintain homoeostasis. In disease states such as obesity and diabetes, the neurometabolic interface is dysfunctional and contributes to clinical illness. The vagus nerve, in particular, with both sensory and motor fibres, provides an anatomical substrate for this interface. Its sensory fibres contain receptors for important circulating metabolic mediators, including leptin and cholecystokinin, and provide real-time information about these mediators to the central nervous system. In turn, efferent fibres within the vagus nerve pa

Using real-time fMRI to influence effective connectivity in the developing emotion regulation network.

For most people, adolescence is synonymous with emotional turmoil and it has been shown that early difficulties with emotion regulation can lead to persistent problems for some people. This suggests that intervention during development might reduce long-term negative consequences for those individuals. Recent research has highlighted the suitability of real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback (NF) in training emotion regulation (ER) networks in adults. However, its usefulness in directly influencing plasticity in the maturing ER networks remains unclear. Here, we used NF to teach a group of 17 7-16

The effect of vibrotactile feedback on postural sway during locomotor activities.

BACKGROUND: Although significant progress has been achieved in developing sensory augmentation methods to improve standing balance, attempts to extend this research to locomotion have been quite limited in scope. The goal of this study was to characterize the effects of two real-time feedback displays on locomotor performance during four gait-based tasks ranging in difficulty. METHODS: Seven subjects with vestibular deficits used a trunk-based vibrotactile feedback system that provided real-time feedback regarding their medial-lateral (M/L) trunk tilt when they exceeded a subject-specific pre

Novel Pharmacologic and Other Somatic Treatment Approaches for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Adults: State of the Evidence.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder that can become chronic and debilitating when left untreated. The most commonly recommended first-line treatments for PTSD among adults are individual trauma-focused psychotherapies. Other evidence-based treatments include specific antidepressant medications and non-trauma-focused psychotherapies. Despite the effectiveness of these available treatments, many patients' symptoms do not remit. This has led to the search for novel treatments for PTSD. In this review, the authors critically evaluate the data supporting

[Key technologies for intelligent brain-computer interaction based on magnetoencephalography].

Brain-computer interaction (BCI) is a transformative human-computer interaction, which aims to bypass the peripheral nerve and muscle system and directly convert the perception, imagery or thinking activities of cranial nerves into actions for further improving the quality of human life. Magnetoencephalogram (MEG) measures the magnetic field generated by the electrical activity of neurons. It has the unique advantages of non-contact measurement, high temporal and spatial resolution, and convenient preparation. It is a new BCI driving signal. MEG-BCI research has important brain science signifi

Resting-state Abnormalities in Heroin-dependent Individuals.

Drug addiction is a major health problem worldwide. Recent neuroimaging studies have shed light into the underlying mechanisms of drug addiction as well as its consequences to the human brain. The most vulnerable, to heroin addiction, brain regions have been reported to be specific prefrontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal regions, as well as, some subcortical regions. The brain regions involved are usually linked with reward, motivation/drive, memory/learning, inhibition as well as emotional control and seem to form circuits that interact with each other. So, along with neuroimaging studi

Neural implant for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

The methods used to treat various neurological diseases are evolving. The facilities provided by the technology have led to creation of new treatment opportunities. Neuromodulation is one of these important methods. By definition, the neuromodulation is a change in neural activity which occurs by stimulating a specific area of nervous system. The mentioned stimulation can be electrical, magnetic, or chemical. This method is used in various diseases, such as stroke, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Multiple sclerosis (MS) is no exception in this regard and meth

Advances in the management of ADHD in children and adolescents.

This review synthesizes evidence on managing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents, focusing on studies published between 2019 and 2025. Recent research supports a dimensional, pleiotropic model of ADHD characterized by heterogeneity, developmental fluctuation, and frequent comorbidity. ADHD is a chronic, fluctuating condition, underscoring the need for sustained and individualized care. Diagnostic strategies favor semi-structured interviews over rating scales, with neuroimaging or biological tests offering limited diagnostic utility. Neuropsychological te

Neural correlates and plasticity of explicit emotion regulation following the experience of trauma.

Experiencing trauma or other adverse life events is highly prevalent and poses a significant risk for the development of mental disorders. Understanding the underlying mechanisms and neural processes involved in trauma processing is crucial for both prevention and targeting symptoms. Especially, difficulties in emotion regulation emerge as one key mechanism implicated in the development of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following traumatic experiences. However, neural correlates of explicit emotion regulation among individuals who have undergone trauma have not receiv

Pathological fear, anxiety and negative affect exhibit distinct neurostructural signatures: evidence from psychiatric neuroimaging meta-analysis.

Internalizing disorders encompass anxiety, fear and depressive disorders, which exhibit overlap at both conceptual and symptom levels. Given that a neurobiological evaluation is lacking, we conducted a Seed-based D-Mapping comparative meta-analysis including coordinates as well as original statistical maps to determine common and disorder-specific gray matter volume alterations in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), fear-related anxiety disorders (FAD, i.e., social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, panic disorder) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Results showed that GAD exhibited disorde

Temporal neural coupling: reconciling the Bobath concept with task-oriented training for post-stroke upper limb recovery-a perspective.

Post-stroke neurorehabilitation has long been shaped by a binary opposition between the Bobath concept and task-oriented training. The former emphasizes inhibition of aberrant patterns and facilitation of normative movement, while the latter prioritizes high-intensity, goal-directed repetition that may inadvertently reinforce compensatory strategies. This dichotomy persists largely because mechanistic frameworks capable of explaining their potential complementarity remain underdeveloped. This perspective article advances the hypothesis of temporal neural coupling. We propose that manual facili

Aberrant multi-brain neurodynamics drive atypical social cooperation and competition in heroin use disorder: An fNIRS-based hyperscanning study.

Although social deterioration in drug addiction has been widely acknowledged clinically, little is known about altered social interactive patterns and their intra- and inter-brain neural underpinnings. The in-depth investigation into the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying how individuals with heroin use disorder (HUD) engage in cooperation and competition-two fundamental forms of social interaction-is crucial for comprehensively characterizing atypical social interaction in HUD. We utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning to explore the cooperative and comp

Cortical modulation through robotic gait training with motor imagery brain-computer interface enhances bladder function in individuals with spinal cord injury.

Neurogenic bladder (NB) dysfunction in individuals with complete spinal cord injury (SCI) is a condition that significantly affects quality of life. Despite the prevalence of interventions, there is a substantial gap in effective treatments for this dysfunction. This study proposes robotic-assisted gait training combined with motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) to induce improved cortical modulation, and consequently improve bladder function in patients with SCI. The study involved seven men with complete and chronic SCI in a protocol comprising 24 sessions of robotic-assis

Resting-state electroencephalography of neural oscillation and functional connectivity patterns in late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of late-life depression (LLD) are highly heterogeneous. Currently, abnormal characteristics of resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) power and functional connectivity are considered trait markers of depressive symptoms in major depression. However, the relationship between EEG spectral features and functional connectivity in LLD remains unknown. METHODS: Forty-one patients with LLD and 44 participants without depression underwent an eyes-closed resting-state EEG. EEG power spectra, alpha asymmetry, and functional connectivity were calculated and an

Closed-loop brain-machine-body interfaces for noninvasive rehabilitation of movement disorders.

Traditional approaches for neurological rehabilitation of patients affected with movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), dystonia, and essential tremor (ET) consist mainly of oral medication, physical therapy, and botulinum toxin injections. Recently, the more invasive method of deep brain stimulation (DBS) showed significant improvement of the physical symptoms associated with these disorders. In the past several years, the adoption of feedback control theory helped DBS protocols to take into account the progressive and dynamic nature of these neurological movement disorders tha

Closed-loop rehabilitation of age-related cognitive disorders.

Cognitive deficits are common in older adults, as a result of both the natural aging process and neurodegenerative disease. Although medical advancements have successfully prolonged the human lifespan, the challenge of remediating cognitive aging remains. The authors discuss the current state of cognitive therapeutic interventions and then present the need for development and validation of more powerful neurocognitive therapeutics. They propose that the next generation of interventions be implemented as closed-loop systems that target specific neural processing deficits, incorporate quantitati
