Acceptability of a family-centered newborn care model among providers and receivers of care in a Public Health Setting: a qualitative study from India.

BACKGROUND: Family-centered care (FCC), based on collaborative participation of the family along with a team of health care providers, is found to increase the well-being of sick infants in neonatal critical care units. Over the last 4 years, the neonatal unit of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi has innovated and developed an implementation framework for FCC. This qualitative study assessed the acceptability of family-centered care among providers and family members of neonates to identify gaps and challenges in implementation. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted among a purpos

Jaundice, terminating breast-feeding, and the vulnerable child.

Jaundice is the most commonly treated condition of otherwise well newborns. Although recommended treatments are thought to be safe and effective, the impact of jaundice and therapy on maternal attitudes and behavior is unknown. It was hypothesized that, in contrast to comparison mothers, mothers of jaundiced infants would be more likely to stop breast-feeding in the first month of life, have more separation difficulties with their infant, and be greater users of health care. Both groups of mothers were surveyed in the hospital and 1 month after discharge. Mothers were eligible if their infants

Early growth and development in low-birthweight infants following treatment in an intensive care nursery.

Sixty-seven appropriate-for-date infants with gestations less than 33 weeks were followed for 12 months after their term dates. All had been born after September 1970. None received hypercaloric alimentation as neonates. Growth from the expected date of delivery was compared with that of 24 normal full-term infants and with accepted growth standards. The boys did not differ from the controls or the standard in mean weight, length, and head circumference, in weight and height indices, or in velocity of weight and linear growth. The girls had a slower velocity of weight growth for the first six

Boosters and time from the last anti-COVID-19 vaccine dose: lead public health choices by real-time epidemiological assessment.

BACKGROUND: the levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after the second vaccine dose decline in the following months; the administration of an additional vaccine dose (booster) is able to restore the immune system in the short period significantly reducing the risk of a severe disease. In the winter of 2021, a new particularly infectious variant caused the urgent need to increase the coverage of the booster dose. OBJECTIVES: to present, using real data, an evaluation of the efficacy of the booster dose in reducing the severe disease of SARS-CoV-2 infection in terms of hospital admissions, inten

[A PROSPECTIVE FOLLOW-UP OF NON-PALPABLE TESTES IN NEONATES].

INTRODUCTION: Cryptorchidism is the most common genitourinary disorder in male neonates, with an incidence of 2-5% in term neonates and 30% in preterm infants. Known complications of this condition include impaired fertility and an increased risk of malignancy. This leads to a high frequency of imaging tests, specifically ultrasonography. Use of ultrasound aims to identify non-palpable testis, however current literature does not support such an approach. GOALS: To evaluate the efficacy of clinical follow-up of cryptorchidism in neonates and to evaluate the need for ultrasonography. METHODS:

Open abdominal wall defects and open spina bifida at a regional hospital in northern KwaZulu-Natal - bellwether conditions for neonatal surgery capacity.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal wall defects (AWDs), such as gastroschisis and omphalocele, and neural tube defects (NTDs) such as open spina bifida (SB) are common congenital anomalies. These anomalies are considered a leading cause of neonatal mortality and have been advocated as bellwether conditions to measure access to surgical care. METHODS: Newborns with open SB or AWD presenting to the nursery at Queen Nandi Regional Hospital over four years (2018-2021) were retrospectively identified. Clinical and electronic database records were reviewed to determine if transfers to definitive tertiary care o

Group B streptococcus neonatal umbilical colonization managed by dry cord care in nurseries: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Screening-based intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) has reduced the prevalence of early-onset group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection in newborns. Nevertheless, early-onset disease still occurs despite IAP, and IAP is not effective in preventing late-onset disease. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of GBS neonatal umbilical colonization managed by dry cord care in Japan. METHODS: Of 735 healthy newborns in the well-baby nursery at Saitama City Hospital, 353 from whom umbilical bacterial swabs were obtained before discharge were included in the analys

Serum biomarkers of neuronal injury in newborns evaluated for selective head cooling: a comparative pilot study.

Background Evaluation of newborns for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) includes laboratory and clinical parameters, as well as amplitude integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG). Based on qualifying criteria, selective head cooling (SHC) is initiated for infants with evidence of moderate to severe HIE. However, some newborns may not qualify for hypothermia therapy based on normal aEEG. Objective To compare levels of serum glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin c-terminal hydrolase-1 (UCHL-1) protein and phosphorylated axonal neurofilament heavy chain (pNF-H), in newborns who met

The timing of elective caesarean deliveries and early neonatal outcomes in singleton infants born 37-41 weeks' gestation.

BACKGROUND: Births by elective caesarean section (CS) are rising, particularly before 39 weeks' gestation, which may be associated with unacceptably high risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. The optimal timing of these deliveries needs to be determined with recent recommendations to delay births by elective CS until 39 weeks. AIMS: To evaluate the association between gestational age (GA) at delivery and neonatal outcomes after elective CS between 37 and 41 weeks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of viable singleton neonates delivered by elective CS at Mater Mothers' Hospitals

Adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes in women with severe mental illness: to what extent can they be prevented?

BACKGROUND: Women with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are at a higher risk of obstetric and neonatal complications. The aim of this study was to better understand the factors that may influence these adverse outcomes. METHOD: We examined obstetric and neonatal outcomes of pregnant women with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and factors possibly influencing these outcomes. A retrospective review of the medical history of 112 women with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder was undertaken. Data for controls were extracted from the hospital's electronic birth record data.
