Autotransplantation of 28 premolar donor teeth in 24 orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis that premolar autotransplantation is not successful for orthodontic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, 28 premolar transplants from 24 orthodontic patients were associated with orthodontic treatment. At a routine 3-month appointment, patients underwent a dental radiograph and a chair-side observation for periodontal problems. Three sets of dental radiographs were taken by one dental assistant using a custom holder at: preoperation (T0), 2 year postoperation (T1), and retention (T2) (4- to 14-year follow-up observation) stages. All tra

Age-related odontometric changes of human teeth.

OBJECTIVE: The number of older patients requiring restorative treatment are likely to increase due to improvements in oral health and increased longevity. However, aging odontometric data are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine possible changes in pulp cell density, pulp area, and dentinal thickness with age. STUDY DESIGN: Incisors (50), canines (39), premolars (51), and molars (7) extracted from 60 patients aged between 10 and 59 years, were analyzed histomorphometrically for cell density (odontoblasts, subodontoblasts, and pulp core fibroblasts) and dentinal thickness. RESULTS:

Eruption pattern of autotransplanted premolars visualized by radiographic color-coding.

Eruption patterns and root growth were visualized with the use of a new technique, radiographic color-coding, for comparison of the development of autotransplanted premolars with contralateral control teeth. Rates of eruption and root growth were studied. The eruption pattern and rate was assessed relative to the first molar. Maximum rates were found to occur between 30 and 60 days after transplantation. There were no significant differences between transplants and their contralaterals. Two distinct categories of eruption patterns were demonstrated. One group showed a tendency toward an initia

Spaced dentition--open, close or redistribute?

A spaced dentition can be due to various reasons such as hypodontia, tooth size discrepancy and impeded eruption. The dilemma for clinicians is whether to close, open or redistribute space. Closing space by orthodontics eliminates the need for prosthetic rehabilitation but it might compromise aesthetics and function. On the other hand, opening space is more complex and requires long-term maintenance. Based on these drawbacks, a careful occlusal analysis and an individualized treatment plan are mandatory for achieving the best result. The prognosis for closing space and substituting congenitall

Prevalence of tooth agenesis and peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisor associated with palatally displaced canine (PDC) anomaly.

Fifty-eight nonsyndromic North American white orthodontic patients with palatal displacement of one or both maxillary canine teeth were studied for associated tooth agenesis and peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors. Agenesis of permanent teeth was identified by x-ray film analysis. Conical crown-size reduction (peg-shape anomaly) of the maxillary lateral incisor (l2) was determined by direct observation. Increases in absence of third molars and second premolars associated with the palatally displaced canine (PDC) anomaly were statistically very highly significant compared with normative data

Cone-Beam Computed Tomographic Scan-based Assessment of the Correlation between the Location of Caries and Pulp Canal Obliteration: An Aid to Treatment Planning.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the correlation between proximal caries and the extent and site of pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scans of mandibular molar teeth. METHODS: A total of 1491 CBCT scans of patients 18-49 years of age were selected from the database (2002-2022). From them, 328 teeth with proximal caries and satisfying inclusion criteria were evaluated by 2 calibrated evaluators. PCO was observed in the sagittal and coronal planes. PCO and proximal caries were compared concerning different age groups, sexes, and sites using an ind

Third-molar mineralization as a function of available retromolar space.

OBJECTIVE: To test in the maxilla and mandible for an association between stage of third-molar (M3) mineralization and space in the jaws for M3 eruption. Mineralization is hypothesized to be delayed not only for impacted M3s but also for M3s with eruption space less than their mesiodistal crown diameter. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 37 females and 32 males aged 17-24 years, for a total sample of 197 upper and lower M3s, were used to assess the status of M3 eruption and measure the M3 crown diameter (CD) relative to the length of the retromo

Mandibular incisor extractions in orthodontics: pitfalls and triumphs: a report of three cases.

Mandibular incisor extraction therapy has been used as a treatment option since the early 1900s to relieve tooth size-arch length discrepancies in the anterior segment of the mandible. The advantages of this therapy include potential reduction in treatment time, possibility of achieving better long-term stability in the mandibular anterior segment since inter canine width is not increased and maintenance of the soft-tissue profile because retraction of the mandibular incisors is less compared with mandibular premolar extractions These advantages are counterbalanced, however, by some potential

The sequential hypothesis of impaction of maxillary canine - a hypothesis based on clinical and radiographic findings.

The aetiology of impacted maxillary canines remains obscure. Numerous researchers have focused on identifying specific and non-specific aetiological factors responsible for canine displacement. Currently, the two most popular hypotheses that have gained consensus worldwide are the guidance theory and the genetic theory. However, no single hypotheses, can completely explain the aetiology of impaction of maxillary canines. This retrospective study was used to develop and postulate the aetiology of both buccally and palatally impacted maxillary canines. The study was conducted on a sample of 533

Do long-term changes in relative maxillary arch width affect buccal-corridor ratios in extraction and nonextraction treatment?

INTRODUCTION: Our aims were to evaluate long-term maxillary arch width changes in orthodontic patients treated with and without premolar extractions and to provide a potential link to the buccal-corridor ratios. METHODS: Dental casts of 34 extraction and 32 nonextraction orthodontic patients with Class I malocclusions were digitized and evaluated before treatment (T1), at posttreatment (T2), and at postretention (T3). The mean postretention times for the extraction and the nonextraction groups were 5 years 2 months and 4 years 10 months, respectively. Specific arch width measurements were mad

Morphologic criteria for root canal treatment of primary molars undergoing resorption.

The endodontic anatomy of primary molars is difficult to predict because of the balance of resorption and hard tissue deposition. In particular, the resorption causes perforating lacunae across the wall of the root, even at the furcation level, and modifies shape, dimension and position of endodontic apex. The phenomenon can be so deep as to compromise endodontic therapy. The first aim of the study was to verify if reliable criteria can be found for treatability in primary molars undergoing resorption, i.e. if it is possible to predict if perforating lacunae are present or not. The second aim

Effect of familial hypophosphatemic rickets on dental development: a controlled, longitudinal study.

Familial or X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLHR) is the most common type of rickets in developed countries today. While the dental manifestations of rickets are well reported, there is little information regarding its relationship to dental development and other dental anomalies. This investigation studied the rate of dental development and associated dental anomalies in 19 XLHR subjects compared with 38 race-, age-, and sex-matched control children. The results showed that in both XLHR and control children, no significant differences existed in dental age compared with the respective chro

[Dentofacial development abnormalities in paediatric sleep-related breathing disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The recent interest in sleep-related breathing disorders has re-opened the old debate as to whether there is a causal relationship between upper respiratory obstruction and abnormalities in dentofacial development. OBJECTIVE: To establish the impact of dentofacial development on sleep-related breathing disorders in children. METHOD: This is a prospective study in which the dentofacial studies of 30 children, diagnosed with a sleep-related breathing disorder using polysomnography, were compared with a control group of 30 healthy children. The ages of both groups were between 3 a

Apical root resorption 6 months after initiation of fixed orthodontic appliance therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Individual predisposition might be a major reason for the observed variation in apical orthodontic root resorption. If so, resorption might be expressed during the initial stages of orthodontic therapy in patients at risk. METHODS: To explore this hypothesis, we evaluated standardized, digitized periapical radiographs made before treatment (T1) and at a mean period of 6.4 months (SD 0.9) after placement of maxillary incisor brackets (T2) in 290 patients (age range, 10.1 to 57.1 years at T1). Anamnestic and treatment parameters were recorded according to a protocol, and maxillary

Ultrasonic determination of gingival thickness. Subject variation and influence of tooth type and clinical features.

The objectives of the present study were (I) to determine the validity and reliability of measuring gingival thickness (GTH) with a recently developed, commercially available ultrasonic device; (II) to measure GTH in relation to tooth type and age of proband; (III) to correlate GTH with varying forms of premolars, canines and incisors. Ultrasonic measurements were performed in 200 periodontally healthy, male probands representing 3 different age groups (20-25, 40-45, 55-60 years). In the maxilla, mean GTH varied between 0.9 mm (canines, 1st molars) and 1.3 mm (2nd molars). In the mandible resp

Proportional Smile Design: Using the Recurring Esthetic Dental Proportion to Correlate the Widths and Lengths of the Maxillary Anterior Teeth with the Size of the Face.

Proportional smile design is a useful tool for evaluating and designing smiles that are in harmony with the face. Although not always observed in nature, the recurring esthetic dental proportion is preferred by dentists surveyed to the width proportions observed in nature with normal-length teeth. The width/length ratio of the central incisor is a key determinant in providing a smile that is pleasing to dentists. Using the desired tooth length while maintaining the preferred 78% width/length ratio of the central incisor in conjunction with the recommended recurring esthetic dental proportion i

A retrospective study on the influence of maxillary canine impaction on premolar root morphology.

OBJECTIVES: The root morphology of the maxillary first premolar differs from the other premolars by presenting a high incidence of separated roots. This study addressed the spatial conditions during root development as a possible influencing factor. Therefore, maxillary computed tomographic (CT) scans of patients with regularly erupted or impacted permanent canines were evaluated on the root morphology of the premolars. METHODS: The following parameters were retrospectively analysed in 250 maxillary CT scans (100 patients with regular erupted permanent canines, 150 patients with at least one
