Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in the adult is thought to be an unreliable procedure with several adverse side effects and, consequently, surgically assisted RME is considered the preferred procedure. The purpose of this paper is to study the efficacy of nonsurgical RME, and to determine the incidence of complications such as relapse of the expansion, pain and tissue swelling, tipping of the molars, opening rotation of the mandible and gingival recession. Rapid maxillary expansion using a Haas expander was examined in 47 adults and 47 children. A control group of 52 adult orthodontic patients

Eruption disturbances may generate esthetic, functional, and structural complications in pediatric patients. This report describes a 10-year-old male patient presenting delayed dental eruption, multiple retained and impacted permanent teeth, a supernumerary tooth, and a dentigerous cyst in the mandibular region. Clinical evaluation, panoramic radiography, and cone beam computed tomography revealed severe ectopic positions, risk of root resorption, and mechanical obstructions preventing eruption. A comprehensive single-stage surgical approach was performed under general anesthesia, including ex

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), machines have been the gold standard for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. But many patients either can't or won't fully comply with the treatment. Because treatment of any kind-even treatment considered inferior to CPAP-is considered better than no treatment at all, specialists have been working to develop oral appliances and other novel devices to open up narrowed airways without forcing pressurized air into patients. Among the new treatments are mandibular advancement devices (MADs), palatal extenders to deliver "airway orthodontics," tongue s

Linguoverted mandibular canine (LMC) teeth are a common form of malocclusion in dogs. If left untreated, contact between the mandibular canine tooth crown tips and the palatal mucosa can result in ulceration, inflammation, infection, and potentially the formation of an oronasal fistula. Various treatment modalities have been described, including both active and passive orthodontic techniques. This report describes the combined use of an active appliance (elastic power chain) and a passive appliance (inclined plane) for the correction of unilateral and bilateral LMC teeth in 2 Shiba Inu dogs. This clinical report describes the long-term oral rehabilitation of a male patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), a congenital disorder characterized by hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and hypohidrosis. At age 3, the patient presented with only 2 conical teeth and total edentulism in the remaining arches. A multidisciplinary, staged treatment plan was implemented from early childhood to adulthood that included preserving erupted teeth, interim prostheses, orthodontics, and early strategic implant placement adapted to craniofacial growth. Initial mandibular implants were placed at age

Congenitally missing teeth are one of the most common dental anomalies. When permanent teeth are absent, various problems can occur It is important to consider the facial profile, position of the incisor teeth, skeletal and dental development, and available dental space before planning treatment. Possible treatment methods include preserving and retaining the deciduous tooth, replacing the missing tooth with prosthesis, placing an implant, or performing a transplant after extracting the deciduous tooth. Among these possibilities, autotransplantation combined with orthodontic treatment corrects

BACKGROUND: High precision intra-oral scans, coupled with advanced software, enable virtual bracket removal (VBR) from digital models. VBR allows the delivery of retainers and clear aligners promptly following debonding, thus reducing the patients' appointments and minimizing the likelihood of tooth movement. The objective of this study was to compare the enamel surface before bonding and after VBR using three different Computer-aided design (CAD) software and to compare their accuracy.
METHODS: Maxillary scans of 20 participants starting orthodontic treatment were selected for inclusion in t

During the application of orthodontic force to a tooth, the surrounding tissues undergo changes of bone resorption and apposition, thereby resulting in tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationship between alveolar bone changes and the periodontal vascular network caused by extrusive orthodontic force using a scanning electron microscopy. Extrusive orthodontic force was applied to the mandibular 2nd and 3rd premolars of adult dogs. At the completion of the loading process, the inferior alveolar arteries were injected with a low viscosity MMA resin (Mercox).

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of retained primary teeth (RPT) associated with delayed permanent tooth eruption and the factors associated with this condition in German children.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study that evaluated panoramic radiographs from orthodontic patients. The diagnosis of RPT was established according to Nolla developmental stage. The primary tooth was considered retained when its successor permanent tooth was in Nolla stage 8, 9, or 10. Statistical analysis was performed with an α of 5% (p < 0.05).
RESULTS: A total of 102 ch

BACKGROUND: Coronal resorption is a coronal degeneration of enamel and dentine in which ultimately the crown is replaced by vascular connective tissue through a defect in the enamel organ of an unerupted tooth. This is also known as pre-eruptive coronal resorption. However, the aetiology of resorption remains unclear.
CASE REPORT: A 13 years 7 months old Caucasian boy who attended an orthodontic consultation for anterior crossbite correction presented with idiopathic pre-eruptive coronal resorption of an erupted right maxillary permanent canine (FDI 13). Clinically, the enamel remaining on th

INTRODUCTION: Repair of root resorption cavities has been studied under light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The aim of this investigation was to demonstrate the use of microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to assist in the identification of the region of interest for light microscopy preparation. This study also qualitatively illustrated the root resorption craters with 4 or 8 weeks of retention after 4 weeks of continuous light or heavy orthodontic force application.
METHODS: Four patients who required bilateral extractions of maxillary first p

Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion is proposed as an efficient approach for adult patients with transverse maxillary deficiency. This article reports the treatment of an 18-year, seven-month old male patient with an anterior open bite and a severely narrowed upper dental arch. A posterior crossbite was present on both sides. For the correction of the posterior crossbite, a lateral maxillary expansion of more than 8 mm was required. A surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion with Le Fort I corticotomy and mandibular setback with a sagittal splitting ramus osteotomy were determin
