This retrospective study compares the therapeutic effects of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and conservative treatment (CT) for osteoporotic distal radius fractures (DRFs) in elderly patients. A total of 200 elderly patients (≥65 years) with osteoporotic DRFs who were treated in our hospital between January 2021 and December 2024 were included. Based on the treatment method recorded in the medical charts, patients were assigned to the MIS group (n = 100) or the CT group (n = 100). In the MIS group, surgical procedures included percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation, volar locking plate implant

INTRODUCTION: Ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are a well-known complication of distal radius fractures (DRF). There are a lot of suspected mechanisms, including mechanical friction, vascular impairment, injury associated with reduction, and local adhesion. However, there have been limited reports about a closed rupture of the EPL tendon associated with a relatively large, displaced dorsal "beak" fracture fragment. We report about the management outcomes and clinical significance of closed ruptures of the EPL tendon caused by a displaced dorsal fracture fragment of beak-li

PURPOSE: Peripheral nerve injury of the upper extremity frequently causes changes in the thermoregulatory system of the hands and fingers and leads to reports of cold intolerance. In this study, we aimed to measure the influence of median or ulnar nerve injury on cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) during prolonged cooling at low temperatures.
METHODS: We tested 12 patients with a median (n = 6) or ulnar (n = 6) injury 4 to 76 months after nerve repair. The palmar sides of both hands were cooled continuously using a cold plate at 5°C. We measured the skin temperature of the fingers using video

BACKGROUND: Neck fractures of the fifth metacarpal are frequent hand injuries. Surgical intervention is indicated for fractures with > 30° flexion angulation, rotational deformities, or shortening > 3 mm. Various techniques, including K-wire fixation, plating, and minimally invasive systems can be used. This study evaluates the efficacy of the Minimally Invasive Reduction and Osteosynthesis System (MIROS) for treating displaced fifth metacarpal neck fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients treated with MIROS between 2019 and 2024 was conducted. Patients aged 18-80 years with uns

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are very common. One of the most significant complications after intraarticular DRF is arthrofibrosis with loss of wrist motion and pain. Wrist arthroscopy has become increasingly popular in the treatment of DRF with the advantage of good visualization of the joint surface and soft tissue injuries. In intraarticular DRFs injuries of the dorsal capsule are a characteristic finding which potentially cause loss of wrist motion. In this study, we investigated if arthroscopic debridement of dorsal capsule injuries at time of surgical fixation provides su

PURPOSE: Extra-articular malunions of metacarpals and phalanges may cause palmar pain, finger scissoring, and splaying, and interfere with function. Current treatment involves open osteotomy and fixation with plates and screws. We present a minimally invasive method using cannulated headless screws for correction of malunions and examine the outcomes in a series of patients.
METHODS: Twenty malunions were operated on in 17 patients. In 16 cases, the malunion involved the metacarpal and in 4 it involved the proximal phalanx. All proximal phalanx and 3 metacarpal malunions were malrotation type

Cutaneous carriage of Malassezia species yeast was investigated in 32 Sphynx cats, and in 10 domestic shorthair (DSH) cats. Samples for mycological culture were taken using contact plates and swabs at seven sites in each cat (left and right axillae and groin, left ear, claw fold on left front paw and the interdigital palmar web of the left front paw). Malassezia species were isolated from 26/32 Sphynx cats (81%) and from 0/10 DSH control cats. In five cases Malassezia species yeasts were isolated at a single site, in the remaining 21 Sphynx cats at multiple sites. A total of 73 Malassezia spec

In view of the results of Swanson implants, particularly the long-term course of silicone implants, the authors studied and developed semi-constrained sliding arthroplasty designed for metacarpo-phalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints. The preliminary study on bones and then on cadaver hands and finally on the knee of the rabbit allowed the design and experimentation of a prototype which led to the creation of a semi-constrained arthroplasty for which the elastic diaphyseal anchoring is ensured without cement and which possesses sliding surfaces composed of a metallic (proximal piece)--

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures are often associated with a fracture of the ulnar styloid at its base. This study tested the null hypothesis that there is no difference in outcome between patients with union and nonunion of a fracture of the proximal half of the ulnar styloid 6 months after volar plate fixation of a fracture of the distal radius.
METHODS: A total of 36 consecutive patients with fractures of both distal radius and the proximal half of the ulnar styloid enrolled in 1 of 2 clinical trials evaluating volar plate fixation of the distal radius had no treatment of the ulnar styloid

BACKGROUND: Preoperative planning is generally performed to simulate the process of reduction as well as to determine the size and placement of implants in patients undergoing distal radius fracture surgery. We previously described a three-dimensional (3D) digital preoperative planning system for the osteosynthesis of distal radius fractures, and we have developed a novel intraoperative referencing system that superimposes preoperative planning (such as plate position and length) onto fluoroscopic images during surgery; however, its efficacy has not been evaluated compared with conventional pl

PURPOSE: Radiocapitate distance (RCD) has been proposed as a radiographic parameter reflecting sagittal carpal alignment after distal radius fracture. However, its clinical significance following volar locking plate (VLP) fixation remains unclear. This study evaluated RCD at 1 year after VLP fixation and investigated its association with radiographic parameters and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 145 patients who underwent VLP fixation for distal radius fracture and completed 1-year follow-up. RCD was measured on lateral wrist radiographs as the perpendicular distance

INTRODUCTION: This report highlights a rare case of complex metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint dislocation, commonly referred to as Kaplan's lesion. This type of dislocation typically results from a hyperextension injury and requires surgical intervention as closed maneuvers are unsuccessful in reducing the dislocation. Surgical reduction for complex MCP joint dislocations is commonly done through classic volar or dorsal approaches. This report presents a case of a complex MCP joint dislocation and the surgical approach taken to address the issue.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a complex MCP

Malunion remains the most common complication following fracture of the distal radius. Deformities can be observed in all three planes with displacement in dorsal or palmar tilt, translation, shortening and axial rotation. Preoperative evaluation requires a comparative analysis with clinical, radiological and scanographic assessment. The functional consequences affect the radiocarpal and distal radio-ulnar joints and the carpus. Biomechanical aspects include changes in pressure forces on the distal radius and ulna, and displacement of the centers of rotation. If present, associated lesions sho

Introduction: Distal metaphyseal ulnar fractures are often found in conjunction with distal radius fractures. However, there is no consensus on optimal management. The purpose of this study was to determine whether simultaneous fixation of both distal radius and distal ulnar fractures would improve outcomes. Materials and Methods: Patients treated for distal radial fractures over a 4-year period at our trauma center were identified, and their medical records were analyzed. Twenty-three patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. All radius fractures were fixed using a volar locking pla
