Over a period of 26 months from January 1996 to February 1998, 388 foxes from the city of Zürich, Switzerland, were examined for intestinal infections with Echinococcus multilocularis and other helminths. The prevalence of E. multilocularis in foxes sampled during winter increased significantly from 47% in the urban to 67% in the adjacent recreational area, whereas prevalence rates of other helminths were similar in both areas. We assayed for West Nile virus (WNV) antibodies to determine the presence and prevalence of WNV infection in three raptor populations in southeast Wisconsin during 2003-04. It has also been reported in wastewater and urban rivers in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Borreliosis, also known as Lyme disease, is a chronic, multi-organ illness that is very difficult to diagnose. It is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and transmitted to humans as a consequence of being bitten by a tick, mostly of the Ixodes genus, infected with the pathogen.
