A model for treating avian aspergillosis: serum and lung tissue kinetics for Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) following single and multiple aerosol exposures of a nanoparticulate itraconazole suspension.

Aspergillosis is frequently reported in parrots, falcons and other birds held in captivity. Inhalation is the main route of infection for Aspergillus fumigatus, resulting in both acute and chronic disease conditions. Itraconazole (ITRA) is an antifungal commonly used in birds, but administration requires repeated oral dosing and the safety margin is narrow. We describe lung tissue and serum pharmacokinetics of a nanoparticulate ITRA suspension administered to Japanese quail by aerosol exposure. Aerosolized ITRA (1 and 10% suspension) administered over 30 min did not induce adverse clinical rea

Comparative analysis of Chlamydia psittaci genomes reveals the recent emergence of a pathogenic lineage with a broad host range.

Chlamydia psittaci is an obligate intracellular bacterium. Interest in Chlamydia stems from its high degree of virulence as an intestinal and pulmonary pathogen across a broad range of animals, including humans. C. psittaci human pulmonary infections, referred to as psittacosis, can be life-threatening, which is why the organism was developed as a bioweapon in the 20th century and is listed as a CDC biothreat agent. One remarkable recent result from comparative genomics is the finding of frequent homologous recombination across the genome of the sexually transmitted and trachoma pathogen Chlam

Listeria monocytogenes infection in poultry and its public health importance with special reference to food borne zoonoses.

Listeriosis is a disease that causes septicemia or encephalitis in humans, animals and birds. Although, the disease is rare and sporadic in poultry but if occurs then causes septicemia or sometimes localized encephalitis. Occasionally, the disease is seen in young chicks and the causative agent, like in humans and animals, is Listeria monocytogenes. The organism is capable to infect almost all animals and poultry; however, outbreaks of listeriosis are infrequent in birds. It is widely distributed among avian species and chickens, turkeys, waterfowl (geese, ducks), game birds, pigeons, parrots,

Antigen-specific IgG antibodies in feather duvet lung.

BACKGROUND: Feather duvet lung (FDL) is a rare subgroup of bird fancier's lung (BFL). We were interested in determining antigen-specific IgG antibodies in patients with FDL and comparing them with those with BFL. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Specific IgG antibodies against goose and duck feathers, analysed with an automated fluorimetric enzyme immunoassay, were measured in healthy subjects (group A, n = 30), in patients with FDL (group B, n = 10) and with BFL (group C, n = 35); typical specific IgG antibodies of BFL in groups B and C. RESULTS: An optimal threshold value for antibodies against goose

Rapid detection of Chlamydia Psittaci by isothermal recombinase polymerase amplification assays.

Chlamydia psittaci (Cps) is a zoonotic pathogen widely distributed in nature that strictly parasitizes eukaryotic cells. Cps is typically carried by parrots and other birds, possesses high virulence and toxicity, and can cause psittacosis in humans and animals. Therefore, monitoring and preventing the spread of psittacosis holds significant economic and public health importance. In this study, the specific primers and probes targeting the CPSIT_0429 gene of Cps were designed and synthesized, and recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assays were developed. Utilizing a real-time fluorescenc

A case report of spherical pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci infection.

Psittacosis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, typically transmitted from birds to humans. Its clinical manifestations are often subtle and non-specific, making it prone to being misdiagnosed as common community-acquired pneumonia. Round pneumonia (or spherical pneumonia) refers to a lung infection that appears as a round or oval density on computed tomography (CT). It is uncommon in adults. Spherical pneumonia specifically caused by Chlamydia psittaci infection is particularly uncommon. Here we report a case of a 43-year-old male who was admitted due to a 4-day his

Prevalence and Genetic Diversity of Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon in Raptors and Other Captive Birds at the National Zoological Garden in South Africa.

Avian haemosporidian infections have been associated with disease outbreaks in zoos and rehabilitation centers globally. This study aimed to determine the occurrence and genetic diversity of avian haemosporidian parasites in captive birds at the National Zoological Garden in South Africa. One hundred and eighty-three blood samples from five orders and 15 species of captive flamingos, vultures, owls, ibises and parrots were analyzed for haemosporidia by nested polymerase chain reaction assays. The samples were collected as part of the zoo's studbook and archived at South African National Biodiv

The Various Ways in Which Birds Blink.

There has, to date, been no systematic study of the various ways in which birds blink. Digital video recordings were made, and studied using still frames, of 524 bird species, mainly in zoos but also in the wild. Videos on 106 species from various sites on the internet were studied, some of which we had also videoed, giving a total of 591 (out of a possible 10,000) species from all 43 orders and 125 (out of a possible 249) families. Digital video recordings were also made of 15 (out of a possible 24) species of crocodile. Three types of blink were observed in birds: (1) Nictitating membrane bl

Characterization and classification of psittacine atherosclerotic lesions by histopathology, digital image analysis, transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative and inflammatory vascular disease characterized in mammals and birds by the accumulation of inflammatory cells, lipids, calcium, and formation of large fibrofatty lesions within the intima of arteries resulting in the disorganization of the arterial wall and stenosis of the lumen. Despite the high incidence of atherosclerosis in parrots and the high number of case reports, there are few pathologic investigations and the ultrastructural study of the lesions has not been documented. Sixty-three major arteries were collected from 24 psittacine birds of 11 species

Peirce's revenge on the Chinese Room.

Since its publication in 1980, John Searle's Chinese Room argument has remained one of the central objections to computational theories of mind and machine understanding. In this paper, we argue that the force of the Chinese Room depends on an implausibly impoverished conception of linguistic interaction: namely, the assumption that a system capable of sustaining unrestricted Turing-level communication could nevertheless remain completely isolated from the pragmatic dimensions of language. Using a Peircean distinction between icons, indices, and symbols, we show that ordinary linguistic intera

Development of a rapid recombinase polymerase amplification assay for avian polyomaviruses.

Budgerigar fledgling disease, caused by avian polyomavirus (APV), is an immunosuppressive condition in budgerigars that typically manifests as abdominal swelling, absence of down feathers on the dorsal and ventral regions, subdermal bleeding in nestlings, and high mortality. A new APV detection relied on real-time quantitative recombinase polymerase amplification (real-time RPA) targeting the large T antigen gene using specific probe and primers. Detection can be accomplished within 25 minutes at 41°C, with this detection threshold of 2.56 × 102 copies/μL. The real-time RPA assay specific dete

Metagenomic Detection of Multiple Viruses in Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Birds are known to harbour many pathogens, including circovirus, herpesviruses, adenoviruses and Chlamydia psittaci. Some of these pose zoonotic risks, while others, such as beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), have a significant impact on the conservation of endangered bird species. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to determine the faecal virome of a group of apparently healthy Monk parakeet using high-throughput sequencing. METHODS: Fresh faecal samples were collected from four Monk parakeets at a pet shop in Melbourne, Australia. Virus enrichment and nucleic acid extraction

An Uncommon Case of Trueperella pyogenes Infection in an Adult Backyard Rooster and a Retrospective Study; 2000-20.

Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterium that induces purulent lesions and abscesses in cattle, small ruminants, and swine. In birds, T. pyogenes infections have been linked to lameness and osteomyelitis in turkeys (Phasianidae) and hepatic fibriscess in turkeys and pigeons (Columbidae). An 18-mo-old backyard rooster with a history of progressive emaciation was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory system. At necropsy, unusual numerous miliary granulomas were identified, primarily in the spleen, but granulomas were also observed in

Medial plantar venous flap technique for volar oblique amputation with no defects in the nail matrix and nail bed.

BACKGROUND: Skin grafting is a simple technique used during volar oblique amputation; however, it is not appropriate to use this technique if the bone or tendon is exposed. Moreover, in volar oblique amputation, if the severed section is large and elongated, skin grafting makes the lack of volume conspicuous, and reconstruction with a V-Y advancement flap occasionally results in a nail deformity that resembles a parrot's beak. We used a medial plantar venous flap for the correction of large volar oblique amputation. METHODS: Reconstructive surgery was performed on patients with volar oblique

[Review of literature and results from test matings of East Friesian milk sheep affected with brachygnathia inferior].

Shortness of the lower jaw (brachygnathia inferior, underbite, overshot, parrot mouth) is an inborn and mostly hereditary malformation often seen in many sheep breeds. Chromosomal anomalies are generally not involved in brachygnathia inferior. Viral infections, teratogenic drugs and alkaloids of plants often lead to craniofacial malformations associated with brachygnathia inferior. A maternal deficiency of iron is discussed as a cause for brachygnathia inferior. We performed a three-year breeding trial using mainly East Friesian milk sheep affected by brachygnathic occlusion. Mating schemes in

Abundances and nocturnal activities of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in termite hills and animal burrows in Baringo District, Kenya.

The abundance of phlebotomine sandflies was studied in a leishmaniasis endemic area in Baringo District, Rift Valley Province, Kenya. This was based on sandfly behaviors at night in their natural habitats of termite hills and animal burrows. Sandflies were collected with an entry-exit trap which has a sieve fixed at the middle to control sandfly movements. Flies were trapped from 1800-0600 hours. Phlebotomus martini (Parrot) were significantly more abundant in termite hills than in animal burrows (P <0.05). Phlebotomus duboscqi (Neveu-Lemaire) were found to favour animal burrows more than term

Optimization of Dye and Plasticizer Concentrations in Halochromic Sensor Films for Rapid pH Response Using Bird-Inspired Metaheuristic Algorithms.

The pH level of a wound environment is a crucial biomarker for monitoring wound healing, particularly in chronic wounds, where alkalinity (pH > 7) is linked to bacterial colonization and infection. This study developed and optimized a halochromic sensor film composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and bromothymol blue (BTB) to enable rapid and reliable pH-responsive color transitions. Feature selection using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the ReliefF algorithm identified Hue, Saturation, and a as key features influencing pH responsivity. Optimization of BTB (0.0
