This work examined the combined effects of waste cooking oil biodiesel (WCOB), NiFe2O4 nanocatalysts, and hydrogen (H2) enrichment on in-cylinder processes, engine performance, and emissions of a diesel engine. To accurately represent the physical processes and to derive thermodynamically consistent predictions, a physics-encoded multi-task machine learning (PE-MTMML) model was developed. Tests were carried out on a single-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine at 1500 rpm. The engine was operated on blends of diesel, WCOB, and NiFe2O4 (50-150 ppm) with the addition of H2 at 5 LPM. The analysis o

PURPOSE: Accurate prediction of the laser energy absorption and corresponding thermal spread is essential for safe and effective outcomes in magnetic resonance-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT), as it enables clinicians to anticipate thermal spread and ensure complete ablation of the epileptogenic focus while minimizing collateral damage. However, current planning tools rely on simplified models that neglect patient-specific anatomy and the cooling effects of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), often resulting in incomplete or asymmetric ablations. To address these limitations, this w

The coronavirus main protease, essential for viral replication, is a well-validated antiviral target. Here, we present Deep-CovBoost, a computational pipeline integrating deep learning with free energy perturbation (FEP) simulations to guide the structure-based optimization of inhibitors targeting the coronavirus main protease. Starting from a reported noncovalent inhibitor, the pipeline generated and prioritized analogs using predictive modeling, followed by rigorous validation through FEP and molecular dynamics simulations. This approach led to the identification of optimized compounds (e.g.

The operation of heavy-haul railway trains with large loads results in significant cracking issues in reinforced concrete beams. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, oxygen, and moisture from the atmosphere penetrate into the beam interior through these cracks, accelerating the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of the steel bars. The rust-induced expansion of steel bars further exacerbates the cracking of the beam. The interaction between environmental factors and beam cracks leads to a rapid decline in the durability of the beam. To address this issue, a multi-physics field coupling durabi

PURPOSE: This study aims at establishing a validation framework for an explainable radiomics-based model, specifically targeting classification of histopathological subtypes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.
METHODS: We developed an explainable radiomics pipeline using open-access CT images from the cancer imaging archive (TCIA). Our approach incorporates three key prongs: SHAP-based feature selection for explainability within the radiomics pipeline, a technical validation of the explainable technique using high energy physics (HEP) data, and a biological validation using RNA-se

Combined small and wide angle synchrotron x-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) techniques have been developed for in situ high pressure samples, enabling exploration of the atomic structure and nanoscale superstructure phase relations. These studies can then be used to find connections between nanoparticle surfaces and internal atomic arrangements. We developed a four-axis control system for the detector, which we then employed for the study of two supercrystals assembled from 5 nm Fe(3)O(4) and 10 nm Au nanoparticles. We optimized the x-ray energy and the sample-to-detector distance to facilitate

Though the positive association between physical activity (PA) and mental health is well established, this relationship is mixed among those with physical disabilities (PDs). Exploration of potential mediating (e.g. anxiety sensitivity; AS) and moderating (e.g. disability status) factors is needed to understand these inconsistencies. This study investigated (a) the moderating role of PD on the association between PA and anxiety and depression symptoms and (b) the mediating role of AS in this association. Participants (N = 231) who identified as someone with an acquired disability, a congenital

Total hip (THA) and knee arthroplasty (TKA) are effective surgical treatments for end-stage osteoarthritis aimed at reducing pain and improving function. Although physical rehabilitation is widely recommended after THA and TKA, its added clinical benefit beyond natural recovery remains uncertain. In the DRAW1 trial, no superiority of physical rehabilitation over no physical rehabilitation was observed. We aimed to replicate the DRAW1 trial by comparing physical rehabilitation (home-based telerehabilitation, or home-based rehabilitation) to no physical rehabilitation following THA or TKA. This

BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) is essential for individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) to maintain functional independence and quality of life. However, difficulties in accurately measuring PA complicate the identification of effective and beneficial interventions. Understanding the discrepancies between self-reported and objectively measured PA is critical for clinical practice. This study compared self-reported and objectively measured PA among people with PD, considering their participation in functional physical rehabilitation (FPR). Purpose: The effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with physical training has shown inconsistent results through research. Hence, a study utilizing a long-term tDCS application over the primary motor cortex and a large sample size is required to determine whether tDCS combined with physical training can increase physical performance (muscular strength, endurance, and explosive strength) in healthy adults. Material and methods: Fifty-six healthy adults were randomly distributed into two groups: active (active tDCS+ physical training) and sham (sham tDCS + phys

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is commonly observed in patients undergoing hemodialysis. PAD impairs the vasculature and leads to pathophysiologic changes in the skeletal muscles, causing physical function impairment and physical inactivity in general. However, it is unclear whether PAD adversely affects physical function and physical activity in patients on hemodialysis.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study with a retrospective review of the data to determine whether PAD is associated with impaired physical function and physical activity in patients undergoing hemodia

BACKGROUND: Although exercise and daily physical activity (PA) have long been known to benefit patients with chronic disorders, knowledge is limited regarding asthma. OBJECTIVE: In a Danish setting, our aim was to measure physical activity, sedentary behavior, and physical capacity among patients with asthma. We hypothesized that people with severe asthma would be less active and more sedentary than their mild-moderate counterparts. METHODS: Adults with asthma were recruited through respiratory outpatient clinics and subsequently examined twice, 4 weeks apart. At each visit, participants under

Background: Physical activity (PA) interventions are limited in number and reach for youth with physical disabilities (YPD) who experience systemic barriers that may preclude their in-person participation. Further, a lack of theory in the development and evaluation of PA interventions impedes our understanding and replication of active components of behavior change. These limitations pose challenges in the effective promotion of PA in YPD. Theory-based and more inclusive methods of PA intervention delivery must be explored in our efforts to promote PA and overall health in YPD. Methods: A pilo

BACKGROUND: Older adults may have difficulty meeting the Physical Activity (PA) Guidelines. A favorable balance between PA and sedentary time (SED) is an important determinant of physical performance in older adults. Our objective was to explore associations of PA/SED with physical performance across mid-older age in adults without overt mobility disability.
METHODS: Framingham Offspring Study participants free of mobility disability with accelerometry and physical performance data (gait speed, chair stand time, and handgrip strength), were studied in cross-sectional analysis (n = 1352). We r
