Intermediate Invasive Fungal Sinusitis, a Distinct Entity From Acute Fulminant and Chronic Invasive Fungal Sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The current classification system of invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) includes acute (aIFS) and chronic (cIFS) phenotypes. Both phenotypes display histopathologic evidence of tissue necrosis, but differ by presence of angioinvasion, extent of necrosis, and disease progression. aIFS is defined by a rapid onset of symptoms, while cIFS slowly progresses over ≥12 weeks. However, a subset of IFS patients do not fit into the clinical presentation and histopathologic characteristics of either aIFS or cIFS. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the demographic, clinical, and histopathologic character

Ablation of the sphenopalatine ganglion does not attenuate the infarct reducing effect of vagus nerve stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerve reduces infarct size by approximately 50% after cerebral ischemia in rats. The mechanism of ischemic protection by vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is not known. In this study, we investigated whether the infarct reducing effect of VNS was mediated by activation of the parasympathetic vasodilator fibers that originate from the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) and innervate the anterior cerebral circulation. We examined the effects of electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerve in two groups of rats: one with and one without SPG ablation. Elec

Anatomical localization and acupuncture pathway of the sphenopalatine ganglion in Sprague-Dawley rats: a microanatomical study.

BACKGROUND: The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) plays a pivotal role in regulating various head and facial diseases, such as cluster headaches, allergic rhinitis, and cerebral ischemia, through its neuroregulatory functions. Current interventions targeting SPG, have certain limitations, such as invasiveness and high cost. Acupuncture, which shows unique advantages, lacks standardized animal models for experimental research. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the spatial anatomical localization of the SPG in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and to establish an effective acupuncture pathway for SPG. METHODS: A t

Surgical anatomy of the sphenopalatine foramen and its arterial content.

The sphenopalatine artery is the end artery of the maxillary artery located within the pterygopalatine fossa and passes through the sphenopalatine foramen (SPF) on lateral nasal wall. Nasal bleeding from this artery is potentially life threatening and may urgently require endonasal endoscopic occlusion. The aims of the present study have been first to investigate the location of the SPF, secondly the pattern of the main branches of the sphenopalatine artery at the foramen. 12 adult dry skulls and 6 adult cadaver heads injected within Indian Ink have been analyzed under an operating microscope

Accuracy and reliability of linear measurements using 3-dimensional computed tomographic imaging software for Le Fort I Osteotomy.

Our purpose was to compare the accuracy and reliability of linear measurements for Le Fort I osteotomy using volume rendering software. We studied 11 dried skulls and used cone-beam computed tomography (CT) to generate 3-dimensional images. Linear measurements were based on craniometric anatomical landmarks that were predefined as specifically used for Le Fort I osteotomy, and identified twice each by 2 radiologists, independently, using Dolphin imaging version 11.5.04.35. A third examiner then made physical measurements using digital calipers. There was a significant difference between Dolphi

Maxillary distraction osteogenesis in cleft lip and palate cases with midface hypoplasia using rigid external distractor: an alternative technique.

BACKGROUND: Patients with operated cleft lip and palate present with a problem of midface hypoplasia, and such patients have been traditionally treated with orthognathic surgery. Such a procedure has its own limitations of relapse and hence a newer modality of distraction osteogenesis with histiogenesis can be chosen to overcome such limitations for midfacial advancement. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an alternative technique and its postoperative stability in maxillary distraction osteogenesis in patients of cleft lip and cleft palate using a rigid external device (RED). METHOD: N

Ultrasound-guided greater palatine nerve block: a case series of anatomical descriptions and clinical evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Greater palatine nerve (GPN) block is commonly performed for maxillary and palatal anesthesia by using bony landmarks. Ultrasound (US) can be used to consistently identify greater palatine foramen (GPF) as a defect in the bony palate enabling US-guided injections near the foramen. METHODS: We scanned and injected 16 undissected well-embalmed hemisectioned cadaveric heads after excluding major anatomical malformations. A linear high-frequency hockey stick probe (7-13 MHz) positioned in long axis to the hard palate visualized GPF as a discontinuity in the hard palate. US-guided inje
