Phylogenetic and genetic population analyses of Amblyomma ovale (Parasitiformes: Ixodidae) from Brazil and Central America.

Amblyomma ovale is a widespread hard tick in Neotropics and it is an important vector of pathogens, particularly Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest, which causes a spotted fever illness in humans. Adult ticks primarily parasitize medium and large mammals, such as carnivores, while larvae and nymphs feed on small mammals and occasionally on birds. In Brazil, the species is found in all six major biomes (Amazon, Atlantic forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pantanal, Pampa), and is generally found in humid, forested areas. Despite its broad range, large-scale genetic studies have been lacking.

Exploring the diversity of Rickettsia in carnivores of the Brazilian cerrado: An analysis of the relationship with ticks.

The proximity of wildlife reserve areas to anthropized regions facilitates the spread and exchange of infectious agents, including pathogens with zoonotic potential, thereby increasing health-related risks for species already threatened with extinction. This study investigated the presence of Rickettsia in wild carnivores of the Brazilian Cerrado. Blood and ectoparasite samples were collected from specimens of the families Canidae (Cerdocyon thous, Chrysocyon brachyurus, Lycalopex vetulus, Speothos venaticus), Mephitidae (Conepatus semistriatus), Procyonidae (Nasua nasua), and Felidae (Leopard

Impact of Epstein-Barr virus co-infection on natural acquired Plasmodium vivax antibody response.

BACKGROUND: The simultaneous infection of Plasmodium falciparum and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) could promote the development of the aggressive endemic Burkitt's Lymphoma (eBL) in children living in P. falciparum holoendemic areas. While it is well-established that eBL is not related to other human malaria parasites, the impact of EBV infection on the generation of human malaria immunity remains largely unexplored. Considering that this highly prevalent herpesvirus establishes a lifelong persistent infection on B-cells with possible influence on malaria immunity, we hypothesized that EBV co-infec

Genetic Diversification in a New Guinean Frog Genus (Mantophryne, Microhylidae) was Driven by Ancient Tectonic Activity and Climate Reorganisation.

Western Melanesia sits at the junction of three major tectonic plates, characterised by dynamic plate interactions and geological diversity. Tectonic activity in this region has given rise to modern New Guinea, a relatively young island with extreme topographic heterogeneity and evolutionarily complex biota. New Guinea-particularly the East Papuan Composite Terrane (EPCT)-supports exceptional frog diversity; however, evolutionary histories of many frogs of the EPCT are poorly understood. The microhylid frog genus Mantophryne currently includes five described species (M. axanthogaster, M. insig

Biodiversity of Potential Vectors of Rickettsiae and Epidemiological Mosaic of Spotted Fever in the State of Paraná, Brazil.

Spotted Fever Rickettsioses (SFR) are diseases caused by bacteria of the genus Rickettsia, and are transmitted mainly by ticks. Its eco-epidemiological scenarios vary spatially, and may also vary over time due to environmental changes. It is the main disease transmitted by ticks to humans in Brazil, with the state of Paraná (PR) having the sixth highest number of notified incidences in the country. However, information is lacking regarding the SFR disease cycles at likely infection sites within PR. During case investigations or environmental surveillance in PR for SFR, 28,517 arthropods were c

Teledermatology Use in Remote Areas of French Guiana: Experience From a Long-Running System.

Introduction: French Guiana is an overseas region of France on the north coast of South America and is mostly covered by tropical rainforest. Most human settlements are located along the coast while some settlements are scattered across the hinterland. In 2001, the French public health service launched a telemedicine pilot project between the main hospital in Cayenne and remote health centers in French Guiana to tackle healthcare access inequalities. The aim of the present study was to review dermatology cases of the French Guiana telemedicine network to assess the use of telemedicine in derma

Loa loa vectors Chrysops spp.: perspectives on research, distribution, bionomics, and implications for elimination of lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis.

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is a filarial disease caused Loa loa. The main vectors are Chrysops silacea and C. dimidiata which are confined to the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. Loiasis is a mild disease, but individuals with high microfilaria loads may suffer from severe adverse events if treated with ivermectin during mass drug administration campaigns for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. This poses significant challenges for elimination programmes and alternative interventions are required in L. loa co-endemic areas. The control of Chrysops has not been

Human monkeypox virus in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The end of smallpox in 1980 and the subsequent stopping of vaccination against smallpox was followed by the emergence of monkeypox (mpox), a viral disease of animal origin, meaning that it is transmitted from animal to human. The symptoms of mpox are similar to smallpox, except that they are less severe in terms of clinical features. In the case of public health, the mpox virus is one of the most important orthopoxviruses (such as variola, cowpox, and vaccinia) that come from the family Poxviridae. Mpox occurs mostly in central Africa and sometimes in tropical rainforests or some u

The dangers of accepting a single diagnosis: case report of concurrent Plasmodium knowlesi malaria and dengue infection.

BACKGROUND: Dengue and malaria are two common, mosquito-borne infections, which may lead to mortality if not managed properly. Concurrent infections of dengue and malaria are rare due to the different habitats of its vectors and activities of different carrier mosquitoes. The first case reported was in 2005. Since then, several concurrent infections have been reported between the dengue virus (DENV) and the malaria protozoans, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Symptoms of each infection may be masked by a simultaneous second infection, resulting in late treatment and severe complicat

Machine learning-based solar radiation prediction across heterogeneous climatic zones using NASA POWER data: a case study in Nigeria.

Accurate prediction of solar radiation is essential for renewable energy planning, climate analysis, and agricultural productivity. Solar radiation data are required for the evaluation of solar power generation potential and crop water requirement computation, which is almost unavailable due to insufficient instrument for its measurement in many locations of the developing nations. Studies that applied several kernels of the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) for the prediction of solar radiation are scarce. This study evaluates the performance of several machine learning models for solar radia

Occurrence, ecological risk assessment and prioritization of pharmaceuticals and abuse drugs in estuarine waters along the São Paulo coast, Brazil.

The pollution of the surface waters by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has attracted worldwide attention, but data regarding their occurrence and potential risks for the aquatic biota on tropical coastal rivers of South America are still scarce. In this context, the occurrence and the preliminary ecological risk assessment of eleven pharmaceuticals of various therapeutic classes (including cocaine and its primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine) were investigated, for the first time, in five rivers of São Paulo, southeast Brazil, covering a coastline of about 140 km, namely Pere

Demography, maternal health and the epidemiology of malaria and other major infectious diseases in the rural department Tsamba-Magotsi, Ngounie Province, in central African Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing an epidemiological transition from a predominance of infectious diseases to non-communicable and lifestyle related conditions. However, the pace of this transition and the pattern of disease epidemiology are uneven between affluent urban and rural poor populations. To address this question for a remote rural region located in the central African rainforest region of Gabon, this study was conducted to assess reasons for health care attendance and to characterize the epidemiology of malaria and other major infectious diseases for the department of Tsa

New molecular identifiers for Simulium limbatum and Simulium incrustatum s.l. and the detection of genetic substructure with potential implications for onchocerciasis epidemiology in the Amazonia focus of Brazil.

The Amazonia onchocerciasis focus of southern Venezuela and northern Brazil is the larger of the two remaining Latin American onchocerciasis foci where disease transmission still occurs and is often regarded as the most challenging of all the Latin American foci to eliminate onchocerciasis. The site is home to a population of over 20,000 semi-nomadic, hunter-gatherer Yanomami people and is made-up of a mosaic of rainforest and savannah ecologies, which are influenced by the area's undulating terrain and rich geological diversity. At least six blackfly vectors have been implicated in onchocerci

Assessment of mosquito species communities biting humans and their livestock in the forest hills of Karen state, Myanmar: a cross-sectional survey in six villages.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases cause significant burdens in rural areas of Southeast Asia. The lack of data on vector bionomics hinders disease control and elimination. The objectives of this study were to assess the diversity and biting behaviours of mosquito species biting humans and their livestock in the forest hills of Karen state, Myanmar, and to assess the patterns of species co-occurrence and the effects of the environment on vector abundance. METHODS: Mosquitoes were captured over 24-h diel cycles in six villages in September 2019 using the human landing catch and cow-baited tra

Virulent Brucella nosferati infecting Desmodus rotundus has emerging potential due to the broad foraging range of its bat host for humans and wild and domestic animals.

Desmodus rotundus, vampire bats, transmit dangerous infections, and brucellosis is a hazardous zoonotic disease, two adversities that coexist in the subtropical and tropical areas of the American continent. Here, we report a 47.89% Brucella infection prevalence in a colony of vampire bats inhabiting the tropical rainforest of Costa Rica. The bacterium induced placentitis and fetal death in bats. Wide-range phenotypic and genotypic characterization placed the Brucella organisms as a new pathogenic species named Brucella nosferati sp. nov., isolated from bat tissues, including the salivary gland
