[Differential effects of ketamine enantiomers on anesthetic levels and glutamate release in the hippocampus].

The anesthetic effects of ketamine enantiomers (40 and 100 mg.kg-1, i.p.) were evaluated in the rat by behavioral parameters such as the orienting response, the tail-pinch test and the spontaneous motor behavior including stereotyped behavior (circling and nodding). The intercellular glutamate concentration in the dorsal hippocampus was measured by brain microdialysis method. The analgesic and sedative effects of the S(+)-ketamine were more potent than those of the R(-)-ketamine at each dose. The incidence of stereotyped behaviors in R(-)-ketamine groups was higher than that of S(+)-ketamine g

From nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia to nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy.

Nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia (NPD) is the term used to describe motor attacks characterized by complex behavior, with dystonic-dyskinetic or ballic movements arising from NREM sleep. NPD together with paroxysmal arousals (PA), the briefest attacks, and episodic nocturnal wanderings (ENW), the most prolonged ones, constitute nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE). PA are sudden awakenings associated with stereotyped dystonic-dyskinetic movements, sometimes accompanied by screaming and a frightened expression. ENW are episodes of agitated ambulation, with complex, sometimes violent, motor behav

Effects of repeated treatment with methamphetamine plus scopolamine and methamphetamine on behavioral sensitization and conditioning.

This study compared repeated treatment with methamphetamine (4.0 mg/kg, i.p.) plus scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) and methamphetamine alone in behavioral sensitization and drug conditioning with respect to a reciprocal balance between the dopaminergic and cholinergic systems. Repeated methamphetamine plus scopolamine treatment induced a more progressive and enduring enhancement of stereotyped behavior than repeated methamphetamine treatment. Methamphetamine plus scopolamine-induced stereotyped behavior was reproduced by challenge injections of not only methamphetamine plus scopolamine and metha

Gender-specific behavioral and immunological alterations in an animal model of autism induced by prenatal exposure to valproic acid.

Autism is a severe behavioral disorder characterized by pervasive impairments in social interactions, deficits in verbal and non-verbal communication, and stereotyped behaviors, with a four times higher incidence in boys than in girls. The core symptoms are frequently accompanied by a spectrum of neurobehavioral and immunological derangements, including: aberrant sensitivity to sensory stimulation, anxiety, and decreased cellular immune capacity. Recently, a new potential rodent model of autism induced by prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA rats) has been proposed. In order to determine if

The song must go on: resilience of the songbird vocal motor pathway.

Stereotyped sequences of neural activity underlie learned vocal behavior in songbirds; principle neurons in the cortical motor nucleus HVC fire in stereotyped sequences with millisecond precision across multiple renditions of a song. The geometry of neural connections underlying these sequences is not known in detail though feed-forward chains are commonly assumed in theoretical models of sequential neural activity. In songbirds, a well-defined cortical-thalamic motor circuit exists but little is known the fine-grain structure of connections within each song nucleus. To examine whether the str

Brief report: sensory abnormalities as distinguishing symptoms of autism spectrum disorders in young children.

The purpose of this study was to explore the sensory profile of young children with ASD compared to young children with other developmental delays (DD) at first ASD assessment. Results found that young children with ASD had more tactile and taste/smell sensitivities and difficulties with auditory filtering than young children with other DD. Moreover, sensory scores were significantly correlated with stereotyped interests and behaviors. These findings support the hypotheses that young children with ASD show more sensory impairments than young children with other DD and that sensory symptoms are

Abnormal Repetitive Behaviors and Self-Mutilations in Small Mammals.

Self-mutilation and abnormal repetitive behaviors in small mammals are challenging conditions for veterinary practitioners. The etiology may be difficult to identify, and the treatment is often unrewarding unless the specific underlying cause can be found. Reinforcement of the abnormal behavior may also complicate the treatment. However, medical causes, including painful conditions, should be investigated thoroughly. Owing to the small blood volume of many small exotic mammals and the associated risk of hypovolemia in case of hemorrhage, an hospitalization with potent multimodal analgesia and

Chinese Medicine Formula "Jian-Pi-Zhi-Dong Decoction" Attenuates Tourette Syndrome via Downregulating the Expression of Dopamine Transporter in Mice.

Jian-Pi-Zhi-Dong Decoction (JPZDD) is dedicated to the treatment for Tourette syndrome (TS) with the guidance of the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This study aims to investigate the expression of dopamine transporter (DAT) in the striatum and stereotyped behavior of TS mice model by intervention of JPZDD. Mice were induced by 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN, 350 mg kg(-1) day(-1), i.p.) for 7 days and divided into 4 groups (n = 20, each): control and IDPN groups were gavaged with saline and the remaining 2 groups with Tiapride (Tia, 50 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) and JPZDD (20 g kg(-1

[Single nucleotide polymorphism in exon partial sequence of sow kappa opioid receptor gene].

The possibility of the Kappa opioid receptor (KOR) gene as the candidate gene affecting the stereotyped behavior traits in sows was discussed in the current study. Based on the exon partial sequence of sow KOR gene, three pairs of primers were designed to analyze single nucleotide polymorphisms to develop PCR-SSCP method in Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc breeds. One polymorphism, found in PCR product amplified with F1/R1, was caused by a single nucleotide mutation of C to T at the position of mRNA 105 compared with the sequence published in GenBank, which was a silence mutation. The results of

Vocalization of echolocation-like pulses for interindividual interaction in horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum).

Although much is known about the echolocation of horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus spp.), little is known about the characteristics and function of their communication calls. This study focused on a stereotyped behavior of a bat approaching a companion animal in the colony, and examined their interaction and vocalization during this behavior. The bats emit echolocation-like vocalizations when approaching each other and these vocalizations contain a "buildup" pulse sequence, in which the frequency of the pulse increases gradually to normal echolocation pulse frequencies. The results suggest that the

Frontal allographic agraphia in a patient with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

We report a patient with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia who developed agraphia, irritability, perseverative and stereotyped behavior, and dietary changes. MRI revealed bilateral frontal convexity atrophy. Neuropsychological examination showed fluent aphasia with perseverative allographic agraphia, mild semantic impairment, and dysexecutive syndrome. Allographic agraphia featured unidirectional conversion from hiragana (cursive form of Japanese phonograms) and kanji (Japanese morphograms) to katakana (square form of Japanese phonograms), as opposed to mutual (bidirectional) conversi

Reducing the expression of the Numb adaptor protein in neurons increases the searching behavior of Drosophila larvae.

Drosophila larval crawling is easily-observable and relatively stereotyped. Crawling consists of linear locomotion interrupted by periods when the larvae pause, swing their heads, and change direction (a 'search'). Here we identify Numb, a peripheral membrane adaptor protein, as an important regulator of searching behavior. When Numb RNAi transgenes were expressed in all neurons, searching frequency increased while linear movement appeared normal. Numb's role in suppressing searching behavior was verified by rescuing this phenotype with a Numb homologue from mice. Such behavioral specificity s

Efficacy of neuroleptic medication in pervasive developmental disorders of childhood.

A number of studies pertaining to the use of antipsychotic medication in the treatment of pervasively disordered children are reviewed. The drugs examined are chlorpromazine, haloperidol, thioridazine, thiothixene, trifluoperazine, lithium, and other miscellaneous agents. Medication side effects are also reviewed with particular attention to extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia. Although methodological problems complicate the interpretation of the studies, the results support the use of antipsychotic medication in this population. The agents do not have the specificity for psychotic

Neurotoxic regimen of methamphetamine produces evidence of behavioral sensitization in the rat.

A neurotoxic regimen of methamphetamine (MA) produces long-term depletions in neostriatal dopamine and serotonin concentrations. In addition to evidence of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotoxicity, there is evidence of MA-induced behavioral changes. In this regard, stereotypic behavior elicited by MA is greater in rats treated previously with a neurotoxic regimen of MA than in control animals. The present study was designed to determine whether the enhanced stereotypy observed in MA-treated rats is due to the MA-induced loss of dopamine (neurotoxicity) or to the repeated exposure to MA (sen

Potentiation of D- and L-amphetamine effects on copulatory behavior in female rats by treatment with alpha-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs.

The influence of noradrenergic mechanisms on the effects of D- and L-amphetamine on lordosis behavior and stereotype activity was studied in ovariectomized estrogen + progesterone treated rats. Phenoxybenzamine, phentolamine and prazosin, which all block alpha-adrenergic receptors potentiated the inhibitory effect of D-amphetamine on lordosis behavior. Phenoxybenzamine and prazosin also potentiated the effect of L-amphetamine, while phentolamine did not increase the effect. No augmented effect of D- or L-amphetamine was obtained on stereotype activity after pretreatment with phenoxybenzamine o

Differential responses in central dopaminergic activity induced by apomorphine in IPL nude rat.

The IPL nude rat, derived by spontaneous mutation from the Sprague-Dawley strain, presents alterations in the prolactin synthesis and secretion due to an increased dopaminergic inhibition. However, there are no reports concerned to central dopamine activity. The corpus striatum is a brain area involved in the development of stereotyped behavior after the activation of mesolimbic and/or nigro-striatal dopamine pathways. In order to identify possible mesolimbic and/or nigro-striatal dysfunctions in the IPL nude rat, we study the spontaneous oral behaviors and the effects of apomorphine-induced d

[Autism. Therapeutic approach and scientific evidence].

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a qualitative alteration in social interaction and communication, associated with restricted interests and stereotyped behaviors. Before 3 years old, it can be inferred by the lack of social and communicative intention, stereotyped behaviors, poor response to being called by name, poor eye contact, absence of language and inadequate sensory responses. It is often associated with other neurodevelopmental disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, language disorders, intellectual disability, motor clumsiness), neuropsychiatric d

Understanding Motor Stereotypies as a Transdiagnostic Phenotype.

Motor stereotypies (MS) are repetitive, rhythmic actions varying in complexity and presentation. Parents and teachers often notice these movements in children at home or in the classroom, prompting clinical attention. Concerns typically arise regarding the potential adverse consequences of these movements on the child, their impact on others, and whether they signal chronic neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This Clinical Perspectives emphasizes MS as a common, transdiagnostic phenotype. It is crucial for clinicians and families to understand their characteri

Case Reports: Clozapine for the Treatment of Catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Catatonia is a severe clinical syndrome which has been increasingly reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The prevalence of catatonia in ASD is unknown. Diagnosing catatonia in ASD is complicated by overlapping clinical features such as mutism, stereotypies, and echophenomena. Here, we present the clinical histories of two individuals with ASD and catatonia who were successfully treated with clozapine. We have reported on a novel potential treatment option for catatonia in ASD. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of clozapine for the treatment
