Influence of head and linear growth on the development of malocclusion at six years of age: a cohort study.

The aim of this article was to evaluate the influence of biological and sociobehavioral factors on the development of malocclusions in children. This is a cross-sectional study nested in a cohort of 350 children who participated in a community intervention study. After six years, an active search identified 290 children with occlusal abnormalities. Socioeconomic status, linear growth, and nutritional status of the child at birth and at the time of measurement, as well as dietary and sucking habits, were investigated. Malocclusions were evaluated across three spatial planes - anteroposterior, v

Neurofunctional reorganization in myo-osteo-dentofacial disorders: complementary roles of orthodontics, speech and myofunctional therapy.

A system of therapy for improving nasal breathing, sucking ability, chewing, swallowing, speech and orofacial muscle function is described. The therapeutic exercises do not require conscious cooperation, so they can be used with very young or handicapped children. Novel strategies for helping children overcome damaging oral habits are detailed. Patterns of collaboration between therapist and orthodontist are described for specific malocclusions.

Breast versus bottle feeding.

Significant or highly significant differences were found between groups of breast and bottle-fed infants with respect to the incidence of jaundice, time to passage of first yellow stool and early weight changes. Experimental parameters were carefully defined, and a simple stool colour comparator has been designed and developed. Breast feeding should be encouraged for its incidence is low in many European countries and it is the responsibility of the attending midwife to ensure that correct suckling techniques are achieved by mothers and infants at the earliest possible time after delivery.

Functional structure of local connections and differentiation of cerebral cortex areas in the neonate.

Neuroimaging research on functional connectivity can provide valuable information on the developmental differentiation of the infant cerebral cortex into its functional areas. We examined healthy neonates to comprehensively map brain functional connectivity using a combination of local measures that uniquely capture the rich spatial structure of cerebral cortex functional connections. Optimal functional MRI scans were obtained in 61 neonates. Local functional connectivity maps were based on Iso-Distance Average Correlation (IDAC) measures. Single distance maps and maps combining three distinct

Manual and alternative therapies as non-pharmacological interventions for pain and stress control in newborns: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Supporting therapies that provide stress and pain control of preterm and term newborns infants contribute positively to the neuropsychomotor development. Non-pharmacological interventions that involve manual techniques are described, considering protocols that can be reproduced by physical therapists, with positive and negative outcomes reports. DATA SOURCES: Systematic review follows PRISMA 2020 statements guidelines. Primary and specific health sciences databases (Science Direct, Pubmed, Scielo, Embase and Scopus) were consulted between October 2021 and May 2022. Articles consid

Influence of Temperature on Development of Yersinia pestis Foregut Blockage in Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) and Oropsylla montana (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae).

Plague, caused by the flea-transmitted bacterial pathogen Yersinia pestis, is primarily a disease of wild rodents distributed in temperate and tropical zones worldwide. The ability of Y. pestis to develop a biofilm blockage that obstructs the flea foregut proventriculus facilitates its efficient transmission through regurgitation into the host bite site during flea blood sucking. While it is known that temperature influences transmission, it is not well-known if blockage dynamics are similarly in accord with temperature. Here, we determine the influence of the biologically relevant temperature

Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Breastfeeding Neonates with Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy on Therapeutic Hypothermia.

Purpose: To identify symptoms of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OPD) in breastfeeding neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) on therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Early identification of feeding problems in neonates with HIE by speech-language therapists (SLTs) may prevent secondary complications of OPD such as aspiration pneumonia and death. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight full-term neonates with HIE (mean chronological age = 4.5 days) and 30 healthy term controls were prospectively recruited for this case-control study. Participants with HIE (mild [n = 15], moderate [n = 11], severe [n

Prader-Willi Syndrome: Obesity due to Genomic Imprinting.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder due to errors in genomic imprinting with loss of imprinted genes that are paternally expressed from the chromosome 15q11-q13 region. Approximately 70% of individuals with PWS have a de novo deletion of the paternally derived 15q11-q13 region in which there are two subtypes (i.e., larger Type I or smaller Type II), maternal disomy 15 (both 15s from the mother) in about 25% of cases, and the remaining subjects have either defects in the imprinting center controlling the activity of imprinted genes or due to other chromosome 15

Effect of spastic cerebral palsy on jaw-closing muscles during clenching.

The motor effort of jaw-closing muscles during maximal voluntary clenching (MVC) was compared between individuals with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) and nondisabled control subjects (CG). Bilateral electromyographic (EMG) activity of the anterior temporalis (AT) and masseter (MS) muscles was obtained during MVC in 22 subjects with CP and 29 nondisabled subjects. The oral functional status of the group with CP was evaluated using the Orofacial Motor Function Assessment Scale. The group with CP presented lower bilateral EMG activity during MVC compared to the control group for both AT and MS muscl

Integration of suck and swallow rhythms during feeding in preterm infants with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

The aim of this study was to define quantitative measures for assessing the integration and maturation of suck and swallow rhythms in preterm infants as they relate to each other. Fourteen preterm infants (eight males, six females; gestational age range 26 to 32 weeks) with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and an age-matched cohort of 20 infants (10 males, 10 females; gestational age range 26 to 33 weeks) without BPD were studied weekly from time of initiation of oral feeding using simultaneous recordings of nipple and pharyngeal pressure. The integration of suck and swallow rhythms was quanti

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction in Prader-Willi syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex neurodevelopmental genetic disorder due to lack of paternal expression of critical imprinted genes in the 15q11.2-q13.1 chromosomal region, generally from a paternal deletion. Predominant features include infantile hypotonia, a poor suck with failure to thrive, craniofacial features, and developmental and behavioral problems including self-injury and childhood onset of obesity. In addition to severe obesity, patients with PWS present with other symptoms of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. METHODS: We examined the features seen in Prader-Wi

Early sucking and swallowing problems as predictors of neurodevelopmental outcome in children with neonatal brain injury: a systematic review.

AIM: Early sucking and swallowing problems may be potential markers of neonatal brain injury and assist in identifying those infants at increased risk of adverse outcomes, but the relation between early sucking and swallowing problems and neonatal brain injury has not been established. The aim of the review was, therefore, to investigate the relation between early measures of sucking and swallowing and neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants diagnosed with neonatal brain injury and in infants born very preterm (<32wks) with very low birthweight (<1500g), at risk of neonatal brain injury. Impact of birthing practices on the breastfeeding dyad.

For breastfeeding to start and continue, the newborn must be able to suck, swallow, and breathe; the mother must be able and willing to let her infant breastfeed; and surroundings must support the biological unit: the mother-baby dyad. This article reviews how birth practices, including epidural anesthesia, cesarean surgery, forceps, and vacuum extraction, can affect the newborn's ability to feed, the mother's motivation and lactation capacity, and the mother-baby relationship.

The changing purpose of Prader-Willi syndrome clinical diagnostic criteria and proposed revised criteria.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex, multisystem disorder. Its major clinical features include neonatal hypotonia, developmental delay, short stature, behavioral abnormalities, childhood-onset obesity, hypothalamic hypogonadism, and characteristic appearance. The genetic basis of PWS is also complex. It is caused by absence of expression of the paternally active genes in the PWS critical region on 15q11-q13. In approximately 70% of cases this is the result of deletion of this region from the paternal chromosome 15. In approximately 28%, it is attributable to maternal uniparent

Effects of perinatal loratadine exposure on male rat reproductive organ development.

Normal pre- and postnatal male reproductive development and function is dependent upon testicular androgen production and is sensitive to antiandrogenic perturbations. It was of interest to determine if the H(1) histamine antagonist loratadine had the potential to alter androgen-mediated reproductive development in the rat, a sensitive species for detecting antiandrogenic effects. Loratadine was administered orally by gavage to pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats at doses of 4, 12 or 24 mg/kg from gestation day 7 to postnatal day 4, encompassing the period of androgen-dependent male reproductive deve
