Perceptual Visual Acuity Declines With Age in a Rat Model of Retinitis Pigmentosa While Light Perception is Maintained.

PURPOSE: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a leading cause of blindness and genetically induces impairment of the retinal epithelium and photoreceptors. In this study, we investigated the decline in the visual response and visual ability during disease progression. This understanding is crucial for disease staging in patients, establishing therapeutic plans in advance, and evaluating the effects of interventional treatments. METHODS: We used a rat model of inherited RP (Royal College of Surgeons [RCS] rats) and evaluated form visual acuity and light perception using behavioral tests and electrophy

Loss of Stim2 in zebrafish induces glaucoma-like phenotype.

Calcium is involved in vision processes in the retina and implicated in various pathologies, including glaucoma. Rod cells rely on store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) to safeguard against the prolonged lowering of intracellular calcium ion concentrations. Zebrafish that lacked the endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ sensor Stim2 (stim2 knockout [KO]) exhibited impaired vision and lower light perception-related gene expression. We sought to understand mechanisms that are responsible for vision impairment in stim2 KO zebrafish. The single-cell RNA (scRNA) sequencing of neuronal cells from brains of 5 day

Neural functional and morphological consequences of retinal degeneration in C3H Lurcher mutant and wild type mice.

Lurcher mutant mice represent a model of olivocerebellar degeneration associated with the total functional elimination of the cerebellar cortex. The affected animals suffer from cerebellar ataxia and worsening of cognitive functions. Healthy littermates of Lurchers-wild type mice serve as controls. Except mentioned patterns some animals derived from the C3H strain exhibit signs of a hereditary retinal degeneration. The impact of the retinal degeneration on visuospatial abilities and on the neuronal morphology in visual projection of both C3H Lurcher mutant and wild type mice has been studied i

Isolated vertical diplopia as the initial manifestation of presumed pretectal and anterior hypothalamic germinomas.

A 21-year-old man with a 5-month history of diplopia caused by isolated vertical ocular misalignment had normal laboratory studies, including brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Eight months after the onset of diplopia, he reported dry mouth, polydipsia, polyuria, and absent sweating. Examination now disclosed light-near dissociation of the pupillary responses, convergence-retraction nystagmus, and upgaze palsy. MRI revealed enhancing suprasellar and pretectal masses presumed to be germinomas. Two years after brain irradiation and systemic chemotherapy, no lesions are apparent on MRI and h

Definition and connections of the entopallium in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

In birds the entopallium (formerly known as the core region of ectostriatum) is the major thalamorecipient zone, within the telencephalon, of the tectofugal visual system. Here we sought to redefine the entopallium in the zebra finch, particularly with respect to a laterally adjacent zone, known as the perientopallium (formerly known as the periectostriatal belt), and to determine its projections. We show that the entopallium can be defined by the almost complete overlap of dense terminations of thalamic rotundal afferents and intense cytochrome oxidase activity and parvalbumin immunoreactivit

Persistence of graded EphA/Ephrin-A expression in the adult frog visual system.

Many studies have demonstrated the involvement of the EphA family of receptor tyrosine kinases and their ligands, ephrin-A2 and -A5, in the development of the temporonasal axis of the retinotectal/collicular map, but the role of these molecules in optic nerve regeneration has not been well studied. Noting that the characteristic gradients of the EphA/ephrin-A family that are expressed topographically in the retina and tectum of embryonic chicks and mice tend to disappear after birth, we took as our starting point an analysis of EphA and ephrin-A expression in leopard frogs (Rana pipiens and ut

Incremental training increases the plasticity of the auditory space map in adult barn owls.

The plasticity in the central nervous system that underlies learning is generally more restricted in adults than in young animals. In one well-studied example, the auditory localization pathway has been shown to be far more limited in its capacity to adjust to abnormal experience in adult than in juvenile barn owls. Plasticity in this pathway has been induced by exposing owls to prismatic spectacles that cause a large, horizontal shift of the visual field. With prisms, juveniles learn new associations between auditory cues, such as interaural time difference (ITD), and locations in visual spac

Stage of specification of the spinal cord and tectal projections from cortical grafts.

In order to determine the embryonic age at which the hodological phenotype developed by neocortical cells is specified, we have examined the spinal or tectal projections developed by embryonic (E) grafts of presumptive frontal or occipital neocortex placed into the frontal or occipital neocortex of newborn host rats. Grafts of E13, E14 and E16 cells of the frontal cortex transplanted into the occipital cortex of newborns are capable of developing and maintaining in adulthood a spinal cord axon. Grafts of E12 cells do not project to the spinal cord but send fibres to the superficial layers of t

Gliomas of the tectum and periaqueductal region of the mesencephalon.

Gliomas that arise in the tectal and periaqueductal region of the mesencephalon usually present with hydrocephalus secondary to occlusion of the aqueduct of Sylvius. A review of 486 brain tumors in children treated during a 5-year period revealed 6 children with gliomas of the tectal plate. The 6 children were shunted for hydrocephalus, presumed secondary to aqueductal stenosis, prior to establishing the diagnosis of tectal plate glioma. No abnormalities were noted on the initial, uncontrasted computed tomography (CT) scans. The tumors are isodense without contrast enhancement which makes the

Chemoarchitectonics of the brainstem in infrared sensitive and nonsensitive snakes.

The crotaline snake Agkistrodon possesses infrared receptors, whereas the colubrid Elaphe quadrivirgata does not. We compared the histochemical activity of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), monoamine oxidase (MAO), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the brainstem of these 2 species, by the method of Nachlas et al. (1957), Glenner et al. (1957), and Koelle and Friedenwald (1949), respectively, and made the following observations. Visual system: The tectum opticum (TO) exhibited strong or moderate AChE and SDH activity in areas receiving retinal projections, i.e. the str. zonale (sz), str. fibrosum

Neuronal responses of the rabbit brainstem during performance of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane (NM)/eyelid response.

Through the use of a chronic microdrive recording system, neuronal unit activity was recorded throughout the brainstem of the rabbit during performance of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane (NM) extension/eyeblink response using an acoustical conditioned stimulus (CS) and a corneal airpuff unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Regions which exhibited neuronal responses near the onset of the learned response were found to be relatively localized to: the abducens, accessory abducens, and facial nuclei (the motoneurons known to innervate the muscles responsible for expression of the conditi

Retrograde transport of nerve growth factor in lesioned goldfish retinal ganglion cells.

Previous experiments have shown that nerve growth factor (NGF) enhances regeneration of goldfish optic nerve after local application of NGF at the site of the lesion. However, the site and mechanism of action of NGF are not yet known. One possibility is that NGF is taken up at the site of the lesion and retrogradely transported to the cell bodies of the retinal ganglion cells and thereby exerts its trophic effects. The present work was carried out to assess the role of retrograde transport of NGF in this enhanced regeneration of goldfish retinal ganglion cells. In intact retinal ganglion cells

Electrical signs of an oligosynaptic visual projection to the rat hippocampus.

In rats with pons transection photic or optic nerve stimulation elicits a response in dorsal hippocampus with approximately with same latency, amplitude and time course as the response in striate cortex. After optic nerve stimulation a positive polyphasic deflection with the last peak at 10 ms is followed by a larger biphasic major deflection with peaks at 15 and 25 ms and later, slower deflections at intervals of 125 ms. The polyphasic deflection is maximal in the inferior part of the hippocampus but does not reverse polarity; the other deflections reverse above and below an isoelectric point

Stress and Parkinson's disease: from dysfunctional detection to impaired handling: a narrative review.

Stress can precipitate Parkinson's disease (PD), and conversely, PD imposes substantial stress on affected individuals. Controlled studies support this bidirectional relationship. Recent observations during the Covid‑19 pandemic suggested that PD patients may sometimes display an unexpected resilience to stressful events (SE), in particular in terms of missing motor deterioration. However, this "favorable" interpretation can be misleading as PD is characterized by dysfunctional stress detection and stress processing. Furthermore, reduced stress‑related cardiac morbidity has not been demonstrat

Anatomical and Volumetric Description of the Baird's Beaked Whale (Berardius bairdii) Brain from Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Baird's beaked whale, a member of the family Ziphiidae, is one of the largest odontocetes, second only to the sperm whale in body mass. The species is known for its exceptional diving abilities, but this behavior makes it difficult to observe in its natural habitat and has contributed to major gaps in our understanding of its biology, including its neuroanatomy. This study provides a detailed anatomical and quantitative description of the Baird's beaked whale brain. METHODS: The brain was examined using magnetic resonance imaging. External and internal neuroanatomical features w

Characterization of experimental cerebral malaria by volumetric MRI A comparative study across the sexes.

Cerebral malaria (CM), a potentially lethal neurological complication of the infection by Plasmodium falciparum, affects mostly the pediatric population under 5 years old in sub-Saharan Africa. This clinical syndrome is characterized on anatomical brain imaging by microhemorrhages, parenchymal lesions and brain edema. Epidemiological studies based on sex or gender are rare and do not allow to draw any conclusions on a possible sexual dimorphism in CM. However, some regional data and genetic studies suggest a possible influence of sex on the susceptibility to this clinical syndrome and complica

Convergence of monosynaptic inputs from neurons in the brainstem and forebrain on parabrachial neurons that project to the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus.

The paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) projects to areas of the forebrain involved in regulating behavior. Homeostatic challenges and salient cues activate the PVT and evidence shows that the PVT regulates appetitive and aversive responses. The brainstem is a source of afferents to the PVT and the present study was done to determine if the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPB) is a relay for inputs to the PVT. Retrograde tracing experiments with cholera toxin B (CTB) demonstrate that the LPB contains more PVT projecting neurons than other regions of the brainstem including the catechol

Time-Dependent Effects of Reduced Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure on Optic Nerve Retrograde Axonal Transport.

PURPOSE: To study the time-dependent effects of reduced cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) on axonal transport in the rat optic nerve. METHODS: Seventy-two adult Sprague Dawley rats were used for this study. Fluoro-Gold was injected into the superior colliculi to study axonal transport. CSFP was reduced to 1.5 to 2.9 mm Hg by continuous aspiration of cerebrospinal fluid. In the sham control group (n = 18), a trocar was implanted in the cisterna magna, but cerebrospinal fluid was not released. CSFP and intraocular pressure (IOP) were continually monitored. CSFP was reduced for 1 hour (low-CSF
