Recent studies have indicated that the acid-base reactions and polymerization of resin-modified glass-ionomers (RMGIs) compete with and inhibit each other; however, external energy can also influence the properties of RMGIs. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of pre-warming and/or delayed light irradiation on marginal integrity of RMGIs in cervical restorations. Standard Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal aspects of 60 human maxillary premolars. Each cavity was treated with a cavity conditioner for 10 seconds, rinsed, and gently air-dried. An RMGI was applied to the prepared ca

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare microleakage of glass ionomer materials (GIC) using two different modes of cavity preparation: a high-speed hand piece and an erbium/yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er/YAG) laser.
METHODS: Eighty caries free permanent molar teeth had class V preparations cut on both the buccal and lingual surfaces. The high-speed hand piece was used to prepare a class V cavity preparation on the buccal surface and an Er/YAG laser was used to prepare a class V cavity preparation on the lingual surface. GIC or resin modified GIC was used as the restorative material.

BACKGROUND: Systemic disease and hormonal changes have been implicated as complicating factors for periodontal disease. Diabetes has been identified as a risk factor for periodontal disease, and diabetics can experience periodontal destruction at an earlier age than non-diabetic individuals. Increased hormone levels during pregnancy can contribute to increased gingival inflammation. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) on the periodontal status of pregnant women.
METHODS: Thirty-three (13 diabetic and 20 non-diabetic) subjects, 20 to 39 wee

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of water storage on nanoleakage depth and the pattern of cervical cavities bonded with different adhesives.
METHODS: For nanoleakage depth evaluation, standardized cervical cavities (2 mm in diameter) were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 36 intact human premolars. Specimens were divided into three groups (n=12) according to the three adhesive systems used: an etch-and-rinse adhesive (SBMP, Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) and two single-step self-etch adhesives; one was mild and acetone based (IB-iBond, Kulzer), while the othe

The configuration of the barrier devices to treat interproximal defects by guided tissue regeneration (GTR) necessitates inclusion of healthy adjacent teeth to secure the barriers in place. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and polylactic acid (PLA) barrier devices on probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and crestal bone height in healthy sites. The study included 30 patients who were in an earlier study which compared the effects of GTR utilizing an ePTFE or a PLA barrier in intrabony defects. Thirty defects were

Root surface resorption, ankylosis (replacement resorption) and alveolar bone resorption are not uncommon sequelae to periodontal healing in both animal and human trials whether the treatment objective is regenerative, preventive, or conservative. The present report describes a case with progressive cervical root resorption in a patient who received periodontal regenerative treatment with guided tissue regeneration (GTR). A 46-year-old woman was referred for treatment of severe periodontitis. Remaining radiographic attachment was less than 50%. Following a period of 18 months, during which non

Sixty caries-free extracted human molars were used to determine the proximo-cervical adaptation and sealing of Class II-composite restorations related to the location of the cavity margins: 1.0 mm or 0.5 mm coronal to the cementum-enamel-junction (CEJ), at the CEJ, and 0.5 mm apical to the CEJ. All cavities were filled with a hybride type composite resin, which was combined at the CEJ and apical to the CEJ with a dentine adhesive in half of the specimens. The proximo-cervical adaptation and sealing was determined before and after thermocycling (TC, 2000 cycles, 5-55 degrees C) by SEM and dye p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There have been few studies of gender differences in response to periodontitis. Thus, we compared gender-specific differences in systemic cytokine concentrations in rats with and without ligature-induced periodontitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Experimental periodontal disease was initiated in Sprague-Dawley rats by placing a ligature around the crowns of the second right maxillary molar tooth. Sham-operated control groups were also created. Two weeks later, the right and left maxillary quadrants of teeth, liver and serum were collected from all the rats, and uterine hor
