Gastric contents was examined in 49 patients with duodenal bulb ulcers. Helicobacter pylori were isolated in 83.7% of cases. H. pylori density was found to be 10(3)-10(5) microbial cells per ml. Bacterioscopic studies with gram staining helped detect H. pylori in 79.6% of cases, cultural method revealed the bacteria in 63.3%, and urease test in 4.1% of cases. Poor efficacy of urease test is explained by its poor sensitivity (10(6) microbial cells per ml or higher). The authors analyze the frequency of H. pylori isolation in relation to the month of the examination and gastric contents coloring

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has become accepted as a human pathogen for the development of gastritis and gastroduodenal ulcer. To develop a simple rat model of chronic H. pylori infection, male Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated with streptomycin suspended in tap water (5 mg/mL) for 3 d. The rats were inoculated by gavage at 1 mL/rat with H. pylori suspension (5 × 10(8)-5 × 10(10) CFU/mL) twice daily at an interval of 4 h for three consecutive days. Two weeks after inoculation, rats were sacrificed and the stomachs were removed. Antral biopsies were performed for urease test and the stoma

In order to study a possible role of Helicobacter pylori infection in chronic laryngitis, we performed endoscopic and histological assessments in addition to a urease test for the bacterium in 35 patients with chronic hoarseness. Six of the patients investigated (17.1%) revealed a positive urease test of the laryngeal biopsy (four male and two female patients). These H. pylori-positive patients were treated with omeprazole and an antibiotic regimen using clarithromycin and metronidazole. This led to an eradication of the H. pylori and resolution of clinical signs and symptoms. These findings s

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that aspirin inhibited Helicobacter pylori growth and suppressed the mutagenic effect of metronidazole.
AIM: To determine the effects of a cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2-specific inhibitor, SC-236, and a non-selective COX inhibitor, indometacin, on the growth, urease activity and antimicrobial susceptibility of H. pylori.
METHODS: Three H. pylori reference strains, and 18 clinical isolates were treated with SC-236 or indometacin for 24 and 48 h. Growth, urease activity and susceptibility to clarithromycin and metronidazole of the bacteria were assessed by viable c

Infection with Helicobacter pylori causes chronic active gastritis and has been associated with gastric and duodenal ulcer disease. In biopsy samples of 110 patients with clinical symptoms of active gastritis, H. pylori was detected by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using species-specific primers defining a 858 bp DNA fragment of H. pylori urease beta-subunit. Sensitivity and specificity of the PCR was compared with culture, histology and Warthin-Starry stain (WSs), detection of H. pylori urease antibodies in serum and urease testing with the Campylobacter-like organism (CLO) te

Gagea granatellii was evaluated for its targeted phenolic profile, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activity, urease-inhibitory potential, cytotoxicity, and mineral content. Liquid chromatography-heated electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HESI-MS/MS) analysis of 29 targeted phenolic compounds revealed kaempferol as the dominant compound in the flower ethanol extract (211.948 µg/g dry weight). In bulb extracts, ellagic acid was highest in the methanol extract (6.925 µg/g), whereas syringic aldehyde (5.564 µg/g) and ferulic acid (2.619 µg/g) were prominent in the water extrac

Urease-induced carbonate precipitation in calcareous soil holds great potential for soil inorganic carbon (SIC) formation and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. However, this process is limited by the slow hydration of carbon dioxide, which can be accelerated by carbonic anhydrase (CA). In this study, we present a novel approach where dual-enzyme (urease and CA) induced carbonate precipitation promotes the synergetic sequestration of SIC and SOC. We selected humic substance, such as humic acid (HA), as a natural SOC to investigate its role in regulating SIC formation and its fate in the

Weekly measurement of urinary pH has become a standard part of long-term catheter management in many parts of the UK. The common problem of catheter encrustation is caused by urease-producing bacteria which also tend to produce alkaline urine. To determine if urinary pH changes in individual catheter users provided enough information for pH monitoring to aid in catheter management, an analysis of the literature was combined with a study of the urinary pH and catheter blockage patterns in 20 catheter users colonized with urease-producing bacteria. It was found that weekly pH measurement does no

126 patients with duodenal peptic ulcer were examined before and in different periods after operation for selective proximal vagotomy (SPV). Endoscopy was performed and Helicobacter pylori (HP) was detected by the urease, bacteriological, and histological methods. The urease test proved to be the most informative, simple, and available method for revealing infection of the gastric mucosa by HP. The frequency of HP detection by this method made up 97-98%. The frequency of ulcer recurrences after SPV coincided with the degree of contamination of the mucosa with HP and increased to 15% in high co

We evaluated 21 healthy asymptomatic Venezuelan volunteers free of risk factors for gastritis with upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and four antral biopsies: a)2 for histological examinations, b) Urease test, c) culture and gram coloration. 13 out of 21 subjects were positive for Campylobacter pylori (61.30%) all of them had chronic gastritis and in the negative cases 7 were considered histologically normal. Urease test was positive in 12/13 with a sensitivity of 92% and 100% specificity. Frequency in our series is high for Campylobacter pylori (61.30%) and this justify prospective and massiv

Bacterial biofilms were observed on 69 of 75 catheters taken from patients undergoing long-term bladder management. Ten catheters were colonized by pure cultures of Proteus mirabilis. In each of these cases the bacteria formed layers on the catheter surface, underlying encrustations of struvite and hydroxyapatite which partially or completely occluded the catheter lumen. Encrustation was also apparent on catheters colonized by P. mirabilis plus other species, but was rarely seen on catheters colonized by non-urease-producing species. These observations support the hypothesis that catheter encr

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: (13)C-urea may be a suitable marker to assess the in vivo fate of colon-targeted dosage forms given by mouth. We postulated that release in the colon (urease-rich segment) of (13)C-urea from colon-targeted capsules would lead to fermentation of (13)C-urea by bacterial ureases into (13)CO(2). Subsequent absorption into the blood and circulation would lead to detectable (13)C (as (13)CO(2)) in breath. If, however, release of (13)C-urea occurred in the small intestine (urease-poor segment), we expected detectable (13)C (as (13)C-urea) in blood but no breath (13)C (as (13)C

Urease-producing bacteria (UPB) could be used to cement loose sand particles. The UPB would produce free ammonia and carbon dioxide during the process of hydrolyzing urea, and part of the free ammonia would be discharged into the air to cause certain pollution to the atmospheric environment. The carbon dioxide could react with alkaline oxide to form carbonates and improved the strength in GGBS comparing with medium containing different concentrations of urea. By adding hydrogen phosphate ions and magnesium salts, free ammonia could be converted into environmentally friendly magnesium ammonium

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori has been established as an etiological agent in gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in the stomach. Recent reports have implicated this bacterium in the causation of benign and malignant gallbladder disease. We investigated the correlation between gallbladder and gastric mucosal H. pylori in patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis.
AIMS: To estimate the prevalence of H. pylori colonization in the gallbladder and assess its correlation with gastric H. pylori in South Indian patients undergoing cholecystectomy.
METHODS:

A newly isolated ureolytic bacteria, Brucella intermedia TSBOI, exhibited microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) which is a promising technique for the remediation of heavy metals in polluted environments. Brucella intermedia TSBOI achieved 90-100% removal of 1 mmol/L Cu2+/Pb2+/Zn2+ within 72 h. A distinctive feature lies in B. intermedia TSBOI's capacity for the transport and hydrolysis of urea, considered to be critical for its strong urease activity. This study explored the mechanisms of this capacity at the genetic, molecular and protein levels through complete genome sequencing,

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and urease are critical enzymes involved in various pathological conditions associated with cellular and tissue damage. Natural products are increasingly explored as safer alternatives to synthetic inhibitors. This study evaluates the phytochemical composition and enzyme inhibitory potential of Pistacia lentiscus leaves using a green extraction approach. Bioactive compounds were extracted via lactic acid-assisted ultrasound, and the crude extract was characterized for total phenolics, flavonoids, LC-MS profile, and in vitro inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and ure

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In the Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori)-negative normal stomach, collecting venules are visible over all the gastric body as numerous minute points evaluated with standard endoscopy. This finding was termed regular arrangement of collecting venules (RAC), and its absence suggests H. pylori gastritis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the RAC and rapid urease test.
METHODS: Two hundred sixty three consecutive adults undergoing upper digestive endoscopy and rapid urease test were included. The lesser curvature of the lower corpus was evaluated for the
