The addition of heat shock protein HSPA8 to cryoprotective media improves the survival of brown bear (Ursus arctos) spermatozoa during chilling and after cryopreservation.

The Cantabrian brown bear survives as a small remnant population in northern Spain and semen cryopreservation for future artificial insemination is one of the measures being implemented for conservation of this species. As part of this program we investigated the value of adding heat shock protein A8 (HSPA8) to media (N-[Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid-TRIS-fructose with 20% egg yolk) used for chilling and cryopreserving the spermatozoa. Semen samples from eight brown bears were obtained by electroejaculation during the breeding season. In experiment 1, we tested three co

Diphyllobothriasis associated with eating raw pacific salmon.

The incidence of human infection with the broad tapeworm Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense has been increasing in urban areas of Japan and in European countries. D. nihonkaiense is morphologically similar to but genetically distinct from D. latum and exploits anadromous wild Pacific salmon as its second intermediate host. Clinical signs in humans include diarrhea and discharge of the strobila, which can be as long as 12 m. The natural life history and the geographic range of the tapeworm remain to be elucidated, but recent studies have indicated that the brown bear in the northern territories of t

Of bears, frogs, meat, mice and men: complexity of factors affecting skeletal muscle mass and fat.

Extreme loss of skeletal muscle mass (atrophy) occurs in human muscles that are not used. In striking contrast, skeletal muscles do not rapidly waste away in hibernating mammals such as bears, or aestivating frogs, subjected to many months of inactivity and starvation. What factors regulate skeletal muscle mass and what mechanisms protect against muscle atrophy in some species? Severe atrophy also occurs with ageing and there is much clinical interest in reducing such loss of muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia). In the meat industry, a key aim is optimizing the control of skeletal muscle gro

Lymphocyte proliferative response in brown bears: cytokine role and glucocorticoid effect.

Lymphocyte stimulation and proliferation play a pivotal role in the immune response to soluble as well as to cellular, bacterial, and viral antigens. In this study, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), mainly composed of lymphocytes, were separated by Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient centrifugation from 50-ml jugular vein blood samples drawn from six captive and five wild-caught brown bears (Ursus arctos) (eight Apennine brown bears from the Italian population; three of undetermined origin). Stimulation of cultured bear PBMC with the two classical T lymphocyte mitogens phytohemagglutinin

Prevalence and assemblage identified of Giardia duodenalis in zoo and farmed Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) from the Heilongjiang and Fujian Provinces of China.

Captive and free-living wildlife serve as significant hosts for Giardia duodenalis. Asiatic black bears, valued for their economic and medicinal importance, are extensively farmed in China and also prevalent in zoos. However, studies on G. duodenalis in these animals in China are limited. Here, 218 feces samples of Asiatic black bears were collected: 36 from a zoo in Heilongjiang Province, and 182 from a farm in Fujian Province. Nested PCR of the SSU rRNA gene, followed by sequencing, was employed to determine the frequency and assemblage distribution of G. duodenalis. Positive samples underwe

Bear bile powder alleviates Parkinson's disease-like behavior in mice by inhibiting astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease in middle-aged and elderly people. In particular, increasing evidence has showed that astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of PD. As a precious traditional Chinese medicine, bear bile powder (BBP) has a long history of use in clinical practice. It has numerous activities, such as clearing heat, calming the liver wind and anti-inflammation, and also exhibits good therapeutic effect on convulsive epilepsy. However, whether BBP can prevent the development of PD has not been elucidated. Hence, this study

Frequency of antimicrobial resistance and integron gene cassettes in Escherichia coli isolated from giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in China.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is considered as a common opportunistic pathogen, which causes seriously intestinal infections to giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and other animals. The aim of this investigation was to characterize the antimicrobial resistance and integron gene cassettes in E. coli isolated from the faeces of giant pandas in China. A total of 89 E. coli were isolated, after diagnosis of isolates and genomes were extracted. All the isolates were screened for the presence of related drug-resistance genes and integron gene cassettes through the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and

Molecular identification of three Trichinella isolates from Heilongjiang Province, People's Republic of China.

DNAs of Trichinella dog isolate (HC), Trichinella swine isolate (HH) and Trichinella cat isolate (SW), obtained from Heilongjiang Province, were amplified by the fragments of 18S rDNA and ITS2. Two reference strains, Trichinella spiralis (ISS3) and Trichinella nativa (ISS10) were used for sequence comparison. Sequence and dendrogram analysis indicated that HC belonged to T. nativa and HH together with SW belonged to T. spiralis. This method permits rapid species identification of Trichinella isolates, although further evaluation is required before precisely identification.

Endocrine disruption in sexual differentiation and puberty. What do pseudohermaphroditic polar bears have to do with the practice of pediatrics?

What do pseudohermaphroditic polar bears and girls with premature breast development have in common? Hormones. Sexual differentiation and the initiation of secondary sexual characteristics, such as breast growth, are both under the control of the sex hormones estrogen and androgen. Abnormal differentiation of the internal or external genitalia in bears and early onset of breast development in girls also may have a common element--exposure to environmental hormones.

Trichinellosis in the United States, 1991-1996: declining but not gone.

Since the U.S. Public Health Service began recording statistics on trichinellosis in 1947, the number of cases reported by state health departments has decreased steadily. In the late 1940s, health departments reported an average of 400 cases and 10-15 deaths each year. From 1991 to 1996, the period covered in this report, three deaths in 230 cases were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (an average of 38 cases per year), including 14 multiple case outbreaks from 31 states and Washington, DC. Information on the suspected food item was available for 134 (58%) of the 230

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli with chromosomally integrated resistance genes isolated from a wild Asian black bear.

Carriage of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in wildlife is a growing public health concern. We isolated an extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli from the feces of a wild bear collected in a persimmon orchard in 2025. The bear isolate exhibited resistance to ampicillin, cefazolin, cefotaxime, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the strain belonged to ST5044-OUT:H29 and harbored the blaCTX-M-55 and other resistance genes integrated into the bacterial genome. Comparative genomic analysis showed close relatedness to isolates from a Vietnames

The resistance patterns and molecular characteristics of ESBL/AmpC-producing Escherichia coli from captive panda ecosystem in China.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) plays an important ecological role, and is a useful bioindicator to recognize the evolution of resistance in human, animal and environment. Recently, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing E.coli has posed a threat to public health. Generally, captive healthy giant pandas are not exposed to antibiotics; however, they still acquire antimicrobial resistant bacteria. In order to understand whether there is an exchange of resistance genes within the ecosystems of captive giant pandas, this study explored resistance characteristics of 330 commensal E. coli isolat

Brain region-specific perfluoroalkylated sulfonate (PFSA) and carboxylic acid (PFCA) accumulation and neurochemical biomarker responses in east Greenland polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is a growing class of contaminants in the Arctic environment, and include the established perfluorinated sulfonates (PFSAs; especially perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)) and carboxylic acids (PFCAs). PFSAs and PFCAs of varying chain length have been reported to bioaccumulate in lipid rich tissues of the brain among other tissues such as liver, and can reach high concentrations in top predators including the polar bear. PFCA and PFSA bioaccummulation in the brain has the potential to pose neurotoxic effects and therefore we conducted a study to investigate if va

Molecular characterization of a Cryptosporidium isolate from a black bear.

To further validate the observation of the existence of host-adapted strains of Cryptosporidium parvum, we genetically characterized an isolate of Cryptosporidium parasite from a black bear. Sequence analysis of the ribosomal RNA small subunit and the 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) showed that this parasite represents a new genotype of C. parvum and is related to the C. parvum dog genotype. This finding is helpful for clarifying Cryptosporidium taxonomy.

SARS-CoV-2 Serological Surveillance of Both Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Zoo Animals with the Identification of a Sloth Bear and a Tapir with Previous Infection.

Since its discovery in 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has continued to be detected in both humans and animals worldwide. Currently there is limited research focusing on serological surveillance of wildlife under human care. Here we tested 230 serum samples of 134 animals from two zoological institutions collected between 2015 and 2024. To assess prior exposure and antibody responses from natural infection or vaccination, we used three serological assays: a nucleocapsid protein-based ELISA (N-ELISA), a surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) for spike (S) protein and a neutralization assay with S-pseudoty

[Troponin dosage in a patient with asymptomatic myocarditis due to trichinellosis].

Human trichinellosis is a potentially severe parasitic disease occurring after ingestion of undercooked meat infected with Trichinella sp. larvae. We report the case of a patient who ate an undercooked bear meat hunted in Canada; he presented with the usual symptoms of trichinellosis (i.e, facial oedema, myalgias and fever) complicated with an asymptomatic myocarditis. Myocarditis is a rare, but potentially lethal complication of trichinellosis. Myocarditis should be screened systematically even when specific symptoms are missing; dosage of troponin serum is a simple and reliable mean for such

Dietary composition in Greenland 2000, plasma fatty acids and persistent organic pollutants.

UNLABELLED: Human exposure to pollution in the Arctic presents a potential future health risk for the local populations. Epidemiological studies in Greenland have shown that human blood levels of several organic contaminants are very high, especially in the North where people depend on local food. In East Greenland (Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund)) the population shows the highest blood levels of several persistent organic pollutants found in Arctic countries, especially PCB, the levels of which exceed Canadian guideline levels. As in other Arctic countries, the direct source of these contamin

Cloning and characterization of a novel sigma-like glutathione S-transferase from the giant panda parasitic nematode, Baylisascaris schroederi.

BACKGROUND: Baylisascaris schroederi, an intestinal nematode of the giant panda, is the cause of the often fatal disease, baylisascariasis. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are versatile enzymes that can affect parasite survival and parasite-host interactions and, are therefore, potential targets for the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines. METHODS: In this study, we identified a full-length cDNA that encoded a novel, secretory sigma-like GST (Bsc-GSTσ) from a B. schroederi-omic dataset. Following cloning and sequencing, sequence and structural analyses and comparative modeling were

Seroprevalence of tularemia in wild bears and hares in Japan.

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis. The distribution of the pathogen in Japan has not been studied well. In this study, seroprevalence of tularemia among wild black bears and hares in Japan was determined. Blood samples collected from 431 Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) and 293 Japanese hares (Lepus brachurus) between 1998 and 2009 were examined for antibodies against F. tularensis by micro-agglutination test (MA) or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. By subsequent confirmatory tests using western blot (WB) and indirect immunofluorescence assay (
