Ocular disorders among schoolchildren in Khartoum State, Sudan.

From December 2005 to June 2007, a total screening of all 1418 government primary schools in Khartoum State, Sudan, was performed to estimate ocular problems among children aged 6-15 years. We screened 671,119 children (56.7% males) for significant refractive error and other eye ailments. Ocular problems were found in 20,321 (3.03%) children. The 3 localities with highest ocular pathology were Karary (26.2%), Ummbada (21.0%) and Jabal Awlia (15.7%). The overall prevalence of refractive error was 2.19%. Myopia was found in 10,064 (1.50%) children while 4661 (0.70%) were hyperopic. Other ocular

Visual acuity measurements in a national sample of British elderly people.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that visual function has an important role in the quality of life in later years, very few studies have measured visual acuity in population based nationwide samples of British elderly people. Such measurements were carried out in the context of the national diet and nutrition survey of people aged 65 years or over (NDNS). METHODS: NDNS participants, who were living in 80 different randomly selected postcode areas of mainland Britain, were visited at their home by a nurse who measured visual acuity at 3 metres, using the Glasgow acuity card (GAC) method. Effectiveness of unsupervised oculokinetic perimetry for detecting glaucomatous visual field defects.

Oculokinetic perimetry (OKP) is a simple, inexpensive technique which was introduced primarily to promote more widespread use of visual field screening for glaucoma. The effectiveness of unsupervised OKP screening was evaluated using 145 non-glaucomatous patients and 64 patients with previously undiagnosed primary open angle glaucoma. Glaucoma cases were validated by the extended 132 point program on the Henson CFS2000 instrument. Both sample populations were representative of patients presenting for primary vision care. The effectiveness of the 26 point OKP test was compared with the 26 point

Vernier acuity cards: examination of development and screening validity.

PURPOSE: Because vernier acuity seems to be limited by the visual cortex, it possesses excellent potential as a clinical/screening tool to detect amblyopia in infants and toddlers. Thus, we developed the vernier acuity cards specifically for this age group. We compared developmental data gathered using this new test and the Teller Acuity Cards. In addition, we compared the clinical/screening validity of the two tests by testing children old enough to complete optotype acuity testing (6.2 ± 2.5 years). METHODS: Vernier acuity and grating acuity were assessed in 98 children and 18 adults with n
