[Neurocognitive function in clinically stable patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and normal controls].

There is a substantial body of evidence suggesting that cognitive deficits in schizophrenia (SΖ) and bipolar disorder (BD) persist after the subsidence of active symptoms. However, it is unclear whether the cognitive deficits observed in patients with BD are quantitatively or qualitatively similar to those in SΖ patients. The aim of the study was to assess and compare the cognitive functioning of patients with clinically stable SZ and BD. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study including a comparison of the Theory of Mind between patients with SZ and BD. General intelligence, att

Cognitive and Behavioral Outcomes of School-aged Children Born Extremely Preterm: a Korean Single-center Study with Long-term Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: School-aged children born very preterm have been suggested to have worse cognitive and behavioral outcomes than children born full-term. Executive function (EF) is a higher level of cognitive function related to academic achievement. The present study aimed to evaluate the cognitive (including EF) and behavioral outcomes of Korean children born extremely preterm (EP) and to analyze any biological or socioeconomic risk factors for poor cognitive outcomes in this population. METHODS: A total of 71 infants weighing < 1,000 g at birth or born before 30 weeks of gestation (EP group) wh

Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase IIa clinical trial on the effects of an estrogen-progestin combination as add-on to inpatient psychotherapy in adult female patients suffering from anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for novel treatment approaches in anorexia nervosa (AN). While there is broad knowledge with regard to altered appetite regulation and neuropsychological deficits in AN patients on the one hand, and the effects of estrogen replacement upon neuropsychological performance in healthy subjects on the other, up to now, no study has implemented estrogen replacement in AN patients, in order to examine its effects upon AN-associated and general psychopathology, neuropsychological performance and concentrations of peptide components of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA

Cognition in trichotillomania: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Trichotillomania (TTM) is a mental health disorder characterized by repetitive urges to pull out one's hair. Cognitive deficits have been reported in people with TTM compared to controls; however, the current literature is sparse and inconclusive about affected domains. We aimed to synthesize research on cognitive functioning in TTM and investigate which cognitive domains are impaired. METHODS: After preregistration on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), we conducted a comprehensive literature search for papers examining cognition in people with

Chronic Use of Synthetic Cannabinoids Is Associated With Impairment in Working Memory and Mental Flexibility.

BACKGROUND: We have recently shown that chronic use of Synthetic Cannabinoids (SCs) has been associated with mood disorders and impairments in executive functions. There is also evidence indicating that chronic SC users have higher rates of comorbidity with depression and psychotic symptoms. Here, we investigate performance on executive function and emotional processing tasks in regular SC users and a measure of schizotypal traits. METHOD: Thirty chronic SC users, 32 recreational cannabis users, and 32 non-using control participants, without history of mental disorder, or current substance ab

Predicting clinical outcome using brain activation associated with set-shifting and central coherence skills in Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) have neuropsychological deficits in Set-Shifting (SS) and central coherence (CC) consistent with an inflexible thinking style and overly detailed processing style, respectively. This study investigates brain activation during SS and CC tasks in patients with AN and tests whether this activation is a biomarker that predicts response to treatment. METHODS: FMRI data were collected from 21 females with AN while performing an SS task (the Wisconsin Card Sort) and a CC task (embedded figures), and used to predict outcome following 16 weeks of treatme

Effects of modafinil on wakefulness and executive function in patients with narcolepsy experiencing late-day sleepiness.

OBJECTIVES: A modafinil daily dosing strategy promotes wakefulness in narcolepsy patients experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness; however, some patients may continue to experience late-day sleepiness. Excessive sleepiness in narcolepsy is associated with cognitive impairment. Modafinil has improved executive function in other models of excessive sleepiness. This study evaluated the effects of once-daily vs. split doses of modafinil on wakefulness and of combined doses on executive function in narcolepsy patients experiencing late-day sleepiness despite satisfactory modafinil treatment earli

Fish consumption and prenatal methylmercury exposure: cognitive and behavioral outcomes in the main cohort at 17 years from the Seychelles child development study.

INTRODUCTION: People worldwide depend upon daily fish consumption as a major source of protein and other nutrients. Fish are high in nutrients essential for normal brain development, but they also contain methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxicant. Our studies in a population consuming fish daily have indicated no consistent pattern of adverse associations between prenatal MeHg and children's development. For some endpoints we found performance improved with increasing prenatal exposure to MeHg. Follow up studies indicate this association is related to the beneficial nutrients present in fish. OBJ

Association between two distinct executive tasks in schizophrenia: a functional transcranial Doppler sonography study.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder involving impairments in executive functioning, which are important cognitive processes that can be assessed by planning tasks such as the Stockings of Cambridge (SOC), and tasks of rule learning/abstraction such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). We undertook this study to investigate the association between performance during separate phases of SOC and WCST, including mean cerebral blood flow velocity (MFV) measurements in chronic schizophrenia. METHODS: Functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD) was used to assess bilater

Neuronal Alterations in Secondary Thalamic Degeneration Due to Cerebral Infarction: A 11C-Flumazenil Positron Emission Tomography Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies using animal experiments have shown secondary neuronal degeneration in the thalamus after cerebral infarction. Neuroimaging studies in humans have revealed changes in imaging parameters in the thalamus, remote to the infarction. However, few studies have directly demonstrated neuronal changes in the thalamus in vivo. The purpose of this study was to determine whether secondary thalamic neuronal damage may manifest as a decrease in central benzodiazepine receptors in patients with cerebral infarction and internal carotid artery or middle cerebral artery disease. METHODS: We

Correlation of abnormalities in resting state fMRI with executive functioning in chronic schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have consistently demonstrated that neurocognitive and social cognitive impairments are commonly observed in schizophrenia, the neural substrates of deficits of cognitive function remain unclear, especially for the chronic schizophrenia. There has been little resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) study of cognitive function in chronic schizophrenia. In this study we aimed to investigate the changes of rs-fMRI signals with regional homogeneity (ReHo), and explore the correlations between abnormal regional activity and cognitive funct

Proxy-reported quality of life in adolescents and adults with dyskinetic cerebral palsy is associated with executive functions and cortical thickness.

PURPOSE: Quality of life (QOL) is a key outcome for people with cerebral palsy (CP), and executive functioning is an important predictor of QOL in other health-related conditions. Little is known about this association in CP or about its neural substrate. We aim to analyze the influence of executive functioning (including cognitive flexibility) as well as that of other psychological, motor, communication and socioeconomic variables on QOL and to identify neuroanatomical areas related to QOL in adolescents and adults with CP. METHODS: Fifty subjects diagnosed with dyskinetic CP (mean age 25.96

The psychotropic effect of vitamin D supplementation on schizophrenia symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a multifactorial disease involving interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Vitamin D has recently been linked to many metabolic diseases and schizophrenia. Vitamin D plays essential roles in the brain in the context of neuroplasticity, neurotransmitter biosynthesis, neuroprotection, and neurotransmission. Vitamin D receptors are demonstrated in most brain regions that are related to schizophrenia. However, very few studies in the literature examine the effects of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) on schizophrenia symptoms. METHODS: This study aimed to ex

Interaction of Serum Copper and Neurometabolites on Executive Dysfunction in Unmedicated Patients With Major Depressive Disorder.

Objective: The mechanism of executive function (EF) impairment in major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. Previous studies have demonstrated that altered serum copper levels and neurometabolic alterations may be associated with the psychopathology and cognitive impairment of MDD. While, their inter-relationships in MDD remain uncertain. The present study aims to assess whether the interaction between serum copper levels and neurometabolic alterations is involved in the deficit of executive function (EF) in patients with unmedicated MDD. Methods: Serum copper levels and EFs were measur

Neuropsychological outcome after surgery of frontal lobe epilepsy in children with good seizure outcome.

One third of children with drug-resistant epilepsy included in surgical programmes have frontal lobe epilepsy. Frontal lobe epilepsy in itself constitutes a high risk of impacting neurocognitive and behavioral development. In this study, we characterized the long-term neuropsychological and behavioral outcomes of children with pharmacoresistant structural focal epilepsy who underwent frontal neurosurgery. The clinical variables that may influence these outcomes were also investigated. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation - including a behavioral questionnaire - was administered to 37
