BACKGROUND: The ameloblastoma management is still challenging to the high recurrence rates and significant morbidity associated with radical treatment. The purpose of this 10-year retrospective study was to analyze the influence of ameloblastoma type and treatment strategy on the long-term outcomes and recurrence rates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The retrospective analyses of 64 histologically-confirmed ameloblastoma cases was performed. The possible risk factors for recurrence and the development of complications were estimated statistically.
RESULTS: The treatment strategy applied for this grou

PURPOSE: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious adverse drug reaction mostly associated to the use of bone-modifying agents. Preventive dental strategies aim to reduce its risk, but the comparative benefit of structured long-term interventions versus a single pre-treatment dental visit remains unclear. This study assessed the impact of a structured long-term, multidomain dental prevention protocol compared with a single baseline dental assessment in patients receiving an oncological-based, high dose (HD) regime of Zoledronic acid (ZA).
METHODS: Between 2012 and 2015,

Primary aggressive oral lymphomas (PAOL) are a rare subset of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas arising in the oral cavity without evidence of other systemic involvement at diagnosis. PAOL accounts for only about 2-3% of all lymphomas. They most commonly belong to aggressive B-cell subtypes such as Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), with occasional cases of Burkitt lymphoma and T-cell/NK-cell lymphomas. Clinically, these malignancies often present with non-specific symptoms (e.g., swelling, pain, ulceration, tooth mobility) that mimic benign dental condition

Introduction Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a clinically challenging condition; however, the actual practice and interprofessional engagement of pharmacists regarding MRONJ remain undetermined. We assessed the awareness, knowledge, and clinical engagement regarding MRONJ among pharmacists working at a cancer care hospital, identified the gaps between theoretical understanding and actual clinical practice, and explored strategies for enhancing interprofessional collaboration and educational support. Methods In this cross-sectional survey, we administered a web-based anon

PURPOSE: Switch from zoledronic acid (ZA) to denosumab may increase the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) owing to the additive effect of denosumab on the jawbone and residual ZA activities. We evaluated the risk of developing MRONJ in patients who received ZA, denosumab, or ZA-to-denosumab for the treatment of bone metastases.
METHODS: The medical charts of patients with cancer who received denosumab or ZA for bone metastases were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who did not undergo a dental examination at baseline were excluded. Primary endpoint was the evaluatio

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Local infection is a risk factor for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), along with invasive dental treatment of the bone; the tooth that is the source of infection should be extracted prior to the administration of bone resorption inhibitors. However, which teeth should be extracted remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the relationship between dental findings prior to high-dose antiresorptive agent (ARA) administration and the subsequent development of MRONJ.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with cancer who were scheduled to receive high-dose ARA

Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) was first reported in 2003. Despite the progress in the understanding of this oral complication in cancer patients for the past 18 years, there is still discussion about the best way to define MRONJ, prevent the complication, how to diagnose, and the options of treatment available. The initial reports associated MRONJ to bisphosphonates and denosumab, medications that work as bone-modifying agents. Later, other agents such as the antiangiogenics, have also been reported to cause the oral complication, either alone or in combination with antir

The literature describes an increasing presence of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ), characterized by the exposure for over 8 weeks of necrotic bone in the maxillofacial region, after bisphosphonate therapy, in the absence of prior maxillary radiotherapy. The present literature review examines the etiopathogenesis, risk factors, clinical forms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of bisphosphonate-induced ONJ. In addition, a review is made of all the series involving over 15 patients diagnosed with this disorder between 1 January 2011 and 15 May 2011. A PubMed-Medline sea

Full-arch implant-supported rehabilitations are widely recognized as an effective treatment option for edentulous patients. Nevertheless, clinical decision-making regarding patient selection, surgical planning, prosthetic material choice, and long-term maintenance protocols remains heterogeneous and requires structured evidence-based guidance. A modified Delphi consensus process was conducted involving 29 experts during the Italian Consensus Conference. A systematic literature review covering the period 2015-2024 was performed, and the certainty of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Re

Dental implants are, nowadays, established surgical devices for the restoration of lost teeth. Considered as an alternative for traditional prosthetic appliances, dental implants surpass them in reliability and patient feedback. Local drug delivery around the implants promotes osseointegration and reduces peri-implantitis. However, there are currently no methods of a multiple, precise topical administration of drugs to the implant area. Engineering coatings on the implants, drug application on carriers during implantation, or gingival pockets do not meet all requirements of dental surgeons. Th

INTRODUCTION: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a complication that develops in patients who use or have used antiresorptive or antiangiogenic medications for the treatment of bone metabolic disease and bone metastases. Clinically, MRONJ is characterized by the appearance of an inflammation in soft tissues and exposure of necrotic bone tissue in mandible or maxilla, for a period of 8 weeks, in patients with no history of head and neck radiotherapy that were being or are being treated with antiresorptive and/or antiangiogenic agents. The fibrin-rich platelets and leukocyte

Asfotase alfa is a human recombinant enzyme replacement therapy for hypophosphatasia. We describe 6 adults who were treated with asfotase alfa for 61-68 months in a clinical trial (NCT01163149), after which asfotase alfa was discontinued for 15-48 months. The patients experienced clinical deterioration and, when treatment was restarted, showed improvement. Patients with hypophosphatasia should be closely monitored if asfotase alfa is stopped as clinical decline is likely. Clinical practice guidelines are needed.

OBJECTIVES: To date, the best treatment for Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is controversial. Recent studies suggest different therapies, considering the stage of MRONJ; however, sometimes patients, although with remarkable extension of disease, cannot undergo surgery. The purpose of present preliminary study was to evaluate the efficacy of conservative non-surgical treatment of MRONJ lesions in a cohort of patients ineligible for surgery or refusing any surgical treatment for stage II and III of MRONJ.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with MRONJ (staging II or III) ineligi

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of different preventive dental visits and treatments in reducing the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ).
METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients diagnosed with MRONJ were divided into 5 groups based on available data: no preventive dental visits (group 0); dental visits and compliance with recommended treatments, at the university hospital's dental clinic (group 1) or maxillofacial surgery unit (group 2), or at a private dentist's (group 3); dental visits at one of the above and noncompliance with proposed treatments (group 4);

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) is a severe complication that has recently emerged in patients treated with intravenous bisphosphonates for malignant diseases. This complication usually presents after a minor local trauma during a dental treatment. Several etiopathogenic mechanisms of this pathological condition have been proposed, but no model can explain all morphological changes observed at the macroscopic and microscopic level. BRONJ is likely to be related to direct toxicity in the bone and soft tissue cells, due to nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates. This review

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a debilitating adverse effect of bisphosphates, antiresorptive therapy or antiangiogenic agents that can potentially increase oxidative stress, leading to progressive osteonecrosis of the jaws. Despite the large number of published systematic reviews, there is a lack of potential MRONJ treatment protocols utilising photobiomodulation (PBM) as a single or adjunct therapy for preventive or therapeutic oncology or non-oncology cohort. Hence, this systematic review aimed to evaluate PBM laser efficacy and its dosimetry as a monotherapy or comb

PURPOSE: The treatment of advanced stages of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) remains challenging. In order to improve decision making concerning the therapy, we examined the change of patients' quality of life (QoL) after surgical treatment of MRONJ stage III.
METHOD: The primary outcome variable was patients' QoL. It was preoperative (T0), 6 weeks postoperative (T1) and 6 months postoperative (T2) assessed by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL-H&N35 (EORTC QoL-H&N35) and the Oral Health Impact Factor-G14 (OHIP-G14) questionnaire in a prospe
