Postacute Sequelae of COVID-19 Across 12 Major Health Domains and 141 Diseases in Individuals With Mental Illness Among COVID-19 Survivors: A Population-Based Cohort Study in South Korea.

Understanding whether individuals with mental illness, who face challenges related to healthcare barriers, are more vulnerable to postacute sequelae of COVID-19 is limited. Here, we investigated the potential association between pre-existing mental illness and postacute sequelae of COVID-19 across 12 major health domains and 141 specific diseases in COVID-19 survivors. The large-scale, population-based cohorts from South Korea (K-COV-N cohort) used in the study included 8 632 221 individuals aged 20 years or older who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2022

A novel technique for NGT fixation: Secure, simple, and safe.

UNLABELLED: Nasogastric tubes are often vitally important in post-operative management. Usually required for short term use, they are easily taped to the nose and face. Occasionally, longer term use is needed, such as in post esophageal reconstruction, where substitution and fixation of the NGT becomes an issue. We describe a novel method of NGT fixation that can be used for prolonged periods of time with minimal risk of dislodgement and without the need for suturing. INTRODUCTION: Nasogastric tubes (NGT) are a common practice in many clinical scenarios, and an easy and available method that

The Optimal Length of Insertion for Central Venous Catheters Via the Right Internal Jugular Vein in Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Patients.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to identify the best among 4 techniques that could predict the length of central venous catheter insertion through the right internal jugular vein, which, in turn, would ensure the ideal placement of the catheter tip in pediatric cardiac surgical patients. The techniques evaluated were those based on operator experience, topography/landmark methods, and one that relied on a patient's height-related formula. Based on the outcome of the study, the possibility of arriving at a formula was investigated that would predict with reasonable certainty the ideal len

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of radiation-induced sequelae in children. The University of Pennsylvania experience.

BACKGROUND: The role of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in the treatment of radiation-related sequelae in adults is well known. In contrast, its role in the management of radiation-related sequelae in children has not been well studied. In an effort to define its value better, the authors reviewed the University of Pennsylvania experience and hereby report the results of their analysis. METHODS: Between 1989 and 1994, ten patients who underwent radiation therapy for cancer as children were referred for HBO therapy. Six patients underwent HBO therapy as a prophylactic measure prior to maxillof

A 3D and Explainable Artificial Intelligence Model for Evaluation of Chronic Otitis Media Based on Temporal Bone Computed Tomography: Model Development, Validation, and Clinical Application.

BACKGROUND: Temporal bone computed tomography (CT) helps diagnose chronic otitis media (COM). However, its interpretation requires training and expertise. Artificial intelligence (AI) can help clinicians evaluate COM through CT scans, but existing models lack transparency and may not fully leverage multidimensional diagnostic information. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop an explainable AI system based on 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automatic CT-based evaluation of COM. METHODS: Temporal bone CT scans were retrospectively obtained from patients operated for COM between December

Skull base osteomyelitis: current microbiology and management.

INTRODUCTION: Skull base osteomyelitis typically presents in an immunocompromised patient with severe otalgia and otorrhoea. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the commonest pathogenic micro-organism, and reports of resistance to fluoroquinolones are now emerging, complicating management. We reviewed our experience of this condition, and of the local pathogenic organisms. METHODS: A retrospective review from 2004 to 2011 was performed. Patients were identified by their admission diagnostic code, and computerised records examined. RESULTS: Twenty patients were identified. A facial palsy was present in

Surgical treatment of the high jugular bulb in patients with Ménière's disease and pulsatile tinnitus.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the functional results of surgical lowering of the high jugular bulb in the treatment of patients with Ménière's disease and pulsatile tinnitus. Fifteen patients with disabling Ménière's disease associated with pulsatile tinnitus and a high and medial jugular bulb were included in this study. As treatment a complete mastoidectomy was performed, after which the jugular bulb was freed by an infralabyrinthine and subfacial approach. The bulb was then displaced downwards with surgical wax. Functional results of surgery were assessed by a question

Localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis: A case report.

Amyloidosis is a rare condition on its own but finding localized amyloidosis of a site such as the nasopharynx is an extremely rare condition with very few cases described in the literature. The condition occurs due to the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the extracellular space disrupting the cell architecture and causing eventual dysfunction. In this case report we discuss the pathophysiology, symptoms, and imaging findings of a patient initially thought to have giant cell arteritis, but who was found on CT to have a mass later determined to be localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis. Eval

Extraoral implants in the rehabilitation of craniofacial defects: implant and prosthesis survival rates and peri-implant soft tissue evaluation.

PURPOSE: Few reports have evaluated cumulative survival rates of extraoral rehabilitation and peri-implant soft tissue reaction at long-term follow-up. The objective of this study was to evaluate implant and prosthesis survival rates and the soft tissue reactions around the extraoral implants used to support craniofacial prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of patients who received implants for craniofacial rehabilitation from 2003 to 2010. Two outcome variables were considered: implant and prosthetic success. The following predictor variables were recorded:

The role of obesity in spontaneous temporal bone encephaloceles and CSF leak.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal bone encephaloceles and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea can lead to life-threatening sequelae such as meningitis and cerebritis. Obesity has been associated with spontaneous CSF leaks. We wished to determine if there were differences in the body mass index (BMI) of patients with spontaneous temporal bone encephaloceles/CSF leaks and nonspontaneous temporal bone encephaloceles/CSF leaks to help determine if obesity may be associated with their development. STUDY DESIGN: Single institution retrospective comparison. METHODS: Demographic and clinical information was obtain

Endolymphatic sac tumor with overexpression of V2 receptor mRNA and inner ear hydrops.

CONCLUSION: We reported previously that hyperactivation of vasopressin type-2 receptor (V2R)-mediated signaling in the endolymphatic sac could affect endolymphatic fluid metabolism, resulting in the pathogenesis of endolymphatic hydrops. Taken together with the present endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) study, it is suggested that disorder of V2R signaling in the endolymphatic sac for any reason could be involved in the pathogenesis of endolymphatic hydrops. Although it is due to tumor genesis in ELST, it is idiopathic in nature in Meniere's disease. OBJECTIVE: We encountered two cases of ELST sh

What's in a name? Eponyms in head and neck imaging.

Head and neck (H&N) eponyms serve to honour physicians who have made important contributions. Compared with more descriptive diagnostic names, eponyms can sometimes be confusing, especially to the novice. Adding to the confusion, eponyms are sometimes applied incorrectly. Nevertheless, their use remains common in the medical literature and clinical practice. Familiarity with H&N eponyms is important for accurate communication with radiology colleagues and clinicians. Some eponyms describe potentially fatal infections and their urgency should be appreciated. Other eponyms, such as those for inn

Microvascular decompression of cranial nerves: lessons learned after 4400 operations.

OBJECT: Microvascular decompression has become an accepted surgical technique for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and other cranial nerve rhizopathies. The senior author (P.J.J.) began performing this procedure in 1969 and has performed more than 4400 operations. The purpose of this article is to review some of the nuances of the technical aspects of this procedure. METHODS: A review of 4415 operations shows that numerous modifications to the technique of microvascular decompression have occurred during the last 29 years. Of the 2420 operat

A Potential Interaction Between Bisphosphonates and Osseointegration of Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid Implants Leading to Late Device Extrusion.

Bisphosphonate therapy is commonly used to treat patients suffering from osteoporosis due to its clinical effectiveness and its generally benign safety profile; however, osteonecrosis of the jaw is a rare side effect that can occur in some patients. A far less elucidated area of concern is the effect of these medications on osseointegrated implants, which require adequate bone formation to ensure long-term viability of the implant. To date, there are no reports in the otolaryngology literature examining the interplay between osteoporosis, bisphosphonate therapy, and osseointegrated bone-anchor

Clinical evaluation of the effectiveness of the developed method of conductive anesthesia of the facial branches of great auricular nerve.

INTRODUCTION: The most common method of local anesthesia of maxillofacial region in the modern surgical practice is conductive anesthesia of the peripheral branches of trigeminal nerve. In order to reach the total anesthesia of the lateral facial region it is necessary to block not only auriculo-temporal and buccal nerves, but also facial branches of great auricular nerve taking part in the innervation of parotid-masticatory area and the part of the cheek. Topographic-anatomical investigations of corpses revealed the anatomical variability of the branching of great auricular nerve on the neck

Procedures for restoring vestibular disorders.

This paper will discuss therapeutic possibilities for disorders of the vestibular organs and the neurons involved, which confront ENT clinicians in everyday practice. Treatment of such disorders can be tackled either symptomatically or causally. The possible strategies for restoring the body's vestibular sense, visual function and co-ordination include medication, as well as physical and surgical procedures. Prophylactic or preventive measures are possible in some disorders which involve vertigo (bilateral vestibulopathy, kinetosis, height vertigo, vestibular disorders when diving (Tables 1 (T
