DBS in pediatric patients: institutional experience.

INTRODUCTION: DBS is initially used for treatment of essential tremor and Parkinson's disease in adults. In 1996, a child with severe life-threatening dystonia was offered DBS to the internal globus pallidus (GPi) with lasting efficacy at 20 years. Since that time, increasing number of children benefited from DBS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated our database of patients who underwent DBS from 2011 to 2017. All patients ≤ 17 years of age at the time of implantation of DBS were included in this series. Subjective Benefit Rating Scale (SBRS), Hoehn Yahr Scale (HYS), Fahn Marsd

Autofluorescence imaging can identify preinvasive or clinically occult lesions in fallopian tube epithelium: a promising step towards screening and early detection.

BACKGROUND: Optical imaging systems are robust, portable, relatively inexpensive, and have proven utility in detecting precancerous lesions in the lung, esophagus, colon, oral cavity and cervix. We describe the use of light-induced endogenous fluorescence (autofluorescence) in identifying preinvasive and occult carcinomas in ex vivo samples of human fallopian tube (FT) epithelium. METHODS: Women undergoing surgery for an i) ovarian mass, ii) a history suggestive of hereditary breast-ovarian cancer, or iii) known serous ovarian cancer following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) were approached fo

[Paratrigeminal epidermoid originated in the meckel's cave (author's transl)].

We have reported a case of paratrigeminal epidermoid originated in the Meckel's cave. A 30 years old man was admitted to the department of neurosurgery with chief complaints of continuous right facial pain and numbness of entire right side of the face of three years duration. The positive neurological findings were hypesthesia over the distribution of the right trigeminal nerve, absence of the right corneal reflex and nystagmus on left lateral gaze. Caloric response was absent on the right side, however the audiogram showed normal. Cerebrospinal fluid examination was within normal limit. Elect

Fifty Years of Lithium in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Disorders: A Systematic Review of Clinical Evidence Challenging a Theoretical Assumption.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders (OCRDs) represent a group of conditions in which lack of response to first-line treatments, such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), is common. Therefore, exploring alternative strategies is necessary. We conducted a systematic review of the use of lithium in OCRDs. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We included studies evaluating the use of lithium for OCRDs in adults. Eligible designs included case reports, case series, observational studies, and clinical trials. Fou

International Consensus on Standard Outcome Measures for Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Consensus Statement.

IMPORTANCE: The use of evidence-based standardized outcome measures is increasingly recognized as key to guiding clinical decision-making in mental health. Implementation of these measures into clinical practice has been hampered by lack of clarity on what to measure and how to do this in a reliable and standardized way. OBJECTIVE: To develop a core set of outcome measures for specific neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), communication disorders, specific learning disorders, and motor disorders, that may be used across a range of geogra

Plasmatic and cell-based enhancement by microparticles originated from platelets and endothelial cells under simulated in vitro conditions of a dilutional coagulopathy.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive fluid management and other external factors may lead to hypothermia, acidosis and hemodilution (defined as Lethal Triad, LT) contributing to a trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) that worsens patients' outcomes. Procoagulant microparticles (MP) are crucial players at the interface of cellular and plasmatic coagulation. However, their functions remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to characterize effects of MP subtypes and concentrations on functional coagulation under in vitro simulated conditions. METHODS: Blood from eleven volunteers were collected to simulate in

Clinical characteristics and neuroimaging findings of seven patients with Dyke Davidoff Masson syndrome.

BACKGROUND: DDMS is a rare disease diagnosed by clinical and radiological characteristics. But the complexity of radiological and clinical manifestations of DDMS has become a challenge diagnostically. To date, the reported cases with DDMS had highly varied clinical manifestations including seizures, contralateral hemiplegia/hemiparesis, facial asymmetry, mental retardation, etc. In addition to typical clinical findings, some new characteristics have been recently added to the spectrum of DDMS. However, few cases have been reported to be associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms according to th

Factors impacting the quality of peer relationships of youth with Tourette's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a poorly understood neurodevelopmental disorder consistently associated with impaired peer relationships. This research aimed to investigate the relationship between TS and the ability of diagnosed youth to form secure attachment relationships with peers. A quantitative study examined differences between youth with TS and typically developing peers in social functioning, relationship problems and attachment security. Qualitative studies sought to identify factors that enhanced or impeded the ability to form secure peer relationships, including the impact

Rare coding variation in OCD implicates shared genes with other psychiatric disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects 2-3% of the population with often disabling obsessions and compulsions. Despite its high heritability, genetic studies of OCD have lagged other psychiatric disorders, particularly in understanding the role of rare genetic variants. OBJECTIVE: To identify rare coding genetic variants contributing to OCD risk and examine genetic overlap with chronic tic disorders (CTD) and other psychiatric conditions. DESIGN: Family-based and case-control whole-exome sequencing (WES) study. SETTINGS: WES data were aggregated from 11 independent cohorts

Striking Long Term Beneficial Effects of Single Dose Psilocybin and Psychedelic Mushroom Extract in the SAPAP3 Rodent Model of OCD-Like Excessive Self-Grooming.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly prevalent disorder that causes serious disability. Available treatments leave 40% or more of people with OCD significantly symptomatic. There is an urgent need for novel therapeutic approaches. Mice that carry a homozygous deletion of the SAPAP3 gene (SAPAP3 KO) manifest a phenotype of excessive self-grooming, tic-like head-body twitches and anxiety. These behaviors closely resemble pathological self-grooming behaviors observed in humans in conditions that overlap with OCD.
