Population genetic structure, serotype distribution and antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae causing invasive disease in children in Argentina.

Invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (IPD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in young children worldwide. In Argentina, PCV13 was introduced into the childhood immunization programme nationwide in 2012 and PCV7 was available from 2000, but only in the private market. Since 1993 the National IPD Surveillance Programme, consisting of 150 hospitals, has conducted nationwide pneumococcal surveillance in Argentina in children under 6 years of age, as part of the SIREVA II-OPS network. A total of 1713 pneumococcal isolates characterized by serotype (Quellung) and

[Purple Urine Bag Syndrome: A Rare Clinical Case].

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a rare syndrome characterized by production of indigo (blue) and indirubin (red) pigments due to bacterial colonization in urinary catheter. The pathogenesis of PUBS is related to the combination of these two pigments produced from the metabolism of tryptophan. Tryptophan turns into indole by deamination, indole turns into indoxyl sulphate by hepatic conjugation and indoxyl sulphate is secreted into urine. Sulphatases and phosphatases enzymes produced by bacteria like Providencia stuartii and Providencia rettgeri, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Es

Does ivacaftor interfere with the antimicrobial activity of commonly used antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa?-Results of an in vitro study.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Ivacaftor is a novel potentiator of defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein, which corrects the gating defect and increases ion-function of activated cell-surface CFTR. Bacteria also regulate their physiology through ion channels. However, little is known about the potential effects of ivacaftor on bacterial ion channels, which, in turn, may have a potential effect on transport across the bacterial cell membrane. Therefore, any change in the ability to transport molecules across cell membranes in bacteria could have an important

The relevance of ESBL producing isolates in patients surgically treated for acute appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: In India, there is a high prevalence of ESBL producing organisms among intraabdominal isolates and in stool flora of 'normal' individuals. Hence, it may be presumed that unless antimicrobial therapy effective for ESBL flora is used perioperatively for abdominal surgery, the outcome will be adverse. We selected patients surgically treated for appendicitis as a model to explore the relevance of ESBL producing isolates in this retrospective observational study. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of ESBL producing isolates in patients surgically treated for acute appendicitis a

In vivo selection of Enterobacter aerogenes with reduced susceptibility to cefepime and carbapenems associated with decreased expression of a 40 kDa outer membrane protein and hyperproduction of AmpC beta-lactamase.

The mechanism(s) of resistance or decreased susceptibility to cefepime (FEP) and/or imipenem (IMP) in three consecutive isolates of Enterobacter aerogenes (Ea1, Ea2 and Ea3) cultured from bronchial aspirates of the same patient after treatment with ceftriaxone and FEP were studied. Identification was performed with the VITEK 2 system. All three isolates showed identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and were resistant (minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs)) to cefoxitin (MIC, >1024 mg/L), cefotaxime (CTX; MIC, 32-128 mg/L) and ceftazidime (CAZ; MIC, 32-128 mg/L) but susceptible

Low frequency electrical impulses reduce atherosclerosis in cholesterol fed rabbits.

CONTEXT: Melioidosis is a rare condition, endemic to northern Australia and south-east Asia, caused by an infection from the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei. The largest epidemiological review to date describes 540 cases of melioidosis seen at Darwin Hospital, in northern Australia, over a 20-year period. Of these, 14 (less than 3%) presented with neurological manifestation, with three deaths. Reports of paediatric cases of melioidosis are rarer. In a review of paediatric cases in northern Australia only eight cases were identified in 10 years. Three of these patients presented with neurolo

Suboptimal ceftazidime-avibactam exposure drives sequential blaKPC mutations and intra-host coexistence of Klebsiella pneumoniae harboring distinct variants leading to persistent infection.

UNLABELLED: KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae infections are a rising global health threat. The factors driving blaKPC mutations during treatment and their contribution to infection persistence remain unclear. This study characterized blaKPC evolution under reduced-dose ceftazidime-avibactam therapy for renal impairment, using 10 sequential K. pneumoniae isolates (showing resistance shifts) collected from a single patient during a persistent infection. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by broth microdilution. Whole-genome sequencing was used to investigate blaKPC evolution. Time-ki

Prevalence, trend and resistance patterns of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales in Bangladesh: a nationwide laboratory-based study.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) pose a significant public health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Bangladesh, where efforts to contain antimicrobial resistance remain inadequate. CRE infections are major contributors to healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and are associated with high mortality, limited treatment options, and increased healthcare costs. This study evaluates the prevalence, resistance patterns, and temporal trends of CRE in Bangladesh using data from standard public and private microbiology laboratories. METHODS: We conduct

Contamination of Hospital Inanimate Surfaces with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase producing bacteria at Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria are the most common contaminants on hospital surfaces. Hospitalized patients, especially those with cancer, have a higher likelihood of acquiring hospital-associated infections in a contaminated environment. Outbreaks of MRSA and ESBL-producing bacteria linked to contaminated inanimate hospital surfaces are a well-documented threat. Cancer patients, who often have prolonged hospital stays, are particularly at risk of acquiring these multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections.

Performance of the Qvella FAST system with downstream application of MALDI-TOF-MS, VITEK 2, and β-LACTA test for same-day identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Gram-negative rods directly from positive blood cultures.

Direct identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of bacteria from positive blood cultures (BCs) are crucial for rapid optimization of therapy in sepsis. The FAST system purifies a Liquid Colony (LC) from BC broth within 25-35 min for downstream applications. We investigated the performance of the FAST system on BCs growing Gram-negative rods combined with mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), the β-LACTA-test, and VITEK 2 AST from LC. VITEK 2 AST results were analyzed after 6 and 8 h, and their impact on empiric antibiotic therapy was examined. We included 119 BCs. MALDI-T
